It's Just A Game - The Story of Kyle Williams, Billy Cundiff, Lee Evans, and NFL Fans.
via l.yimg.com
"It's just a game." A phrase that can make me even more upset when things go bad when I'm playing a game or a team I like loses. Why do we get so upset when things don't go the right way or when our favorite team loses? Because we have invested so much emotionally. We want success. We want victory. We don''t want to lose or have our team lose. But when we do lose or when the team loses many emotions come out. The most prominent being either anger or sadness. After Watching both of the championship games 3 men were pointed out for losing the game for their respective teams. Lee Evans, Billy Cundiff, and Kyle Williams.
Lee Evans drops a potential game winning touch down, Billy misses what would be considered for an NFL kicker an easy field goal just 32 yards, and Kyle Williams muffs a punt and then fumbles another in overtime that led to a game winning Giants field goal. The reaction from the fans was insane. For example I will paraphrase a few comments on Kyle Williams' twitter account. I will warn you that these are quite graphic.
"@KyleWilliams_10 I hope you and your wife, kids, and family die. You deserve it."
"@KyleWilliams_10 You should skydive without a parachute."
"@KyleWilliams_10 You should bungee jump without a rope."
"@KyleWilliams_10 You should walk into traffic blindfolded."
"@KyleWilliams_10 I hope there is a price on your scalp."
"@KyleWilliams_10 I would love to take an aluminum baseball bat to your cranium."
"@KyleWilliams_10 I hope you're never in a 49er's jersey again you F**."
"@KyleWilliams_10 You better stay out of the bay area."
And that's not even the start of it. There are hundreds of threats and overall hate hurled towards Kyle Williams and for what? Fumbling? You would swear that the man confessed to plotting the 9/11 attacks. The guy screwed up. And I ain't going to sit on the moral high horse and look down on people from my ivory tower. I have hated players for messing up. Hell I've hated players for doing well when they play against the Rams. But this.... This is outrageous. When Patrick Peterson screwed us over on not one but two punt returns I was sick to my stomach and I couldn't stand hearing about Peterson. But never did I think of going on his twitter account and throwing comments like the ones above on his account.
You may be saying that it's not the same. 49er fans are upset because their own player "cost" them the game. OK. I live up here in Wisconsin and when the Packers got to the 07 championship game, you could damn well bet that I wanted them to win and then go to the Superbowl and stomp a mud hole in the Patriots again. But then they lost in an extremely emotional way. It was a crushing defeat and the blame was placed a hundred percent on Brett Favre and the interception he threw in overtime. It sucked. But I didn't think of killing Favre or any of the Packers players or coaches. Now I can't stand the 'Pack, but it isn't for that game. That's a different story for a different time that I call never.
I guess I'm saying that people need to tone it down.

Well said...
Someone needs to say it, unfortunately.
Agreed.
This shouldn’t need to be said but when I saw what was being said towards Kyle Williams I felt like I should have written something about it.

Much appreciated.

I hate the fuckin n*ners as much as anyone but the first thing I thought was poor kid, he's gonna get tattooed in that environment.
I hate this about sports fans. I can’t imagine what a human being would get out of expressing him or herself in this way towards anyone. Some of those are pretty much just ignorant frustration. The others, the reference to his family or the death threats, or any threats, should be traceable and prosecutable.

You wouldn't believe how many times I saw that "family" line.

Well done & rec'd.
You can’t blame Kyle Williams for losing that game, but if the San Francisco fan base insists on it, I’ll welcome him as a Ram.
Been losing sleep over Rams football since 1999.
Steven Jackson is a beast, a legend, a HoFer and should be treated as such.
Yeah Kyle actually did very well this season.
Funny how opinions of someone can go form great to shit in a second.

oh you can easily blame him for it
He’s the scapegoat. However, 9ers fans forget that it was their QB and offense in general with one pass of 3 yards to their WRs, and 1 3rd down conversion of 13 attempts.
What is weird is I saw on SBNation that his scouting report said how he is as un clutch as Romo and fumbled a punt return in the biggest game of his collegiate career.
Ominous no doubt. For that alone I wouldn’t want him on the Rams. He’s just not the WR we need.
I love him all the same and hope he stays a 9er (No Homo)

What Was The Name
Of that Cubs fan who reached out for a ball? I think it was Barton. The fans; some not all, would have done serious harm to that guy without police and security protection. The incident over the summer where a paramedic from LA went to San Fran to catch his team play The Giants. He was almost beaten to death. At old Metropolitan Stadium in Minnesota during a playoff game; some fans struck the ref in the head with batteries after Drew Pearson scored a last second TD( Hail Mary). The Boise St kicker who missed a FG; is probably still receiving hate mail and death threats. I am amazed when so much focus is placed on , “The Violent Aspect Of The Game”, " That type of play should come with a fine and suspension", “There is no place for that kinda stuff”. In a lot of unfortunate ways; sports truly mirrors society.
How about when some fans (I think this was a playoff game) threw beer bottles at the Jacksonville Jaguars?

I remember a couple years ago when the flyers beat Washington and Montreal in the playoffs. Washington fans threw bottles at our players post game and the Montreal fans were throwing pizza on our players in the penalty box. just absolutely ridiculous

The Cubs fan you're thinking of is Steve Bartman.
Espn did one of their 30 for 30 videos on him last year.
Don't forget to turn your swag on today.
this is a the ugly side of human nature
not unlike “road rage” . Its been said that every brain has a chemical imbalance. In some cases it’s just worse than others.
On a lighter note. This can go both ways.
I have selected a picture of Mr. Williams and now proudly display him on my computer screen (wallpaper). I’m also seriously considering dropping him a tweet with my sincere condolences in hopes that all is well. For if I had to suffer threw a 49er/Patriots Super Bowl there’s a good chance I would have shot myself.
Kyle Williams is my favourite player in the league
Not on the Rams roster.

different
conference my man, unless you were joking in which that made me laugh a little

I don’t know who Chris long was, so I gave a player I figured ya’ll wouldn’t know since he plays for Jacksonville. Wouldn’t be bad if a NE DE was supposed to go.

I don't understand it either, do they think the guy wants to fail? Tried to fumble?
I see that as more a great defensive play, now the kicker for the Ravens on the other hand… he muffed that kick. I would have his walking papers all ready for him this morning if I was in charge there. He didn’t lose the game; they almost had a TD catch, but a great defensive play stopped it, but super wide left wasn’t even close. Still, yeah it’s only a game & these ppl are either sick or trying to be funny and are sick.
Whats worse than a great defensive play occurred for the Jaguars. It was their second meeting with the Texans. Blaine Gabbert threw a perfect ball and it was incomplete. M. Lewis was rhe target. He was wide open in the endzone. Just as the reached him, he tripped over his own feet. That would have tied the game.
Another one of those games for Jacksonville was the “Monsoon Game” against the Panthers. The Punter, Matt Turk, fumbled a punt. Plus Gabbert, in his first NFL game, fumbled 4 times, recovering all of them.
It's All good!
Kyle williams was just a kid who saw a moment to help his team and he took it
Sad that because he fumbled its “he lost the game for us”. I saw one comment that said “the kid lacks focus”. Really? Thank god some niners fans stepped up to defend him. Same with cundiff .. Raven fans want him cut now… But he was a pro bowl kicker last year

I understand the whole premise of "It's just a game", but...
…at the end of the day, it’s more than just a game. Everyone knows football is more than about the players on the field. When your team wins or loses, it’s means so much more than just a win. If he makes all the plays and they go to the Super Bowl, he held as a hero, role model, etc. If he messes up, he will be ridiculed and bashed for not doing a good job.
Why, you ask? Because it goes far beyond a game. If the 49ers go to the Super Bowl, they will have a chance to make history to which only a handful of teams have done. A trip to the Super Bowl or even a Super Bowl win affects the pride of fans that have been there for the good times and the bad. It allows them to boast and brag and people will do anything for that feeling. If their team loses though, they will be talked about and joked because fans will remember the play of that one player (i.e. Bartman)
But the one thing we all can agree on is a win or loss really has to do with money. The people that are bashing him might have had hundreds, even thousands riding on that game. If he plays to his best potential, then everyone wins. Since he didn’t and people may have lost money, they hate him. Even outside of betting, think about the economic impact. If he doesn’t fumble then the 49ers go to the Super Bowl and that allows them to gain hundreds of new fans based on the exposure. The city of San Francisco will benefit because people will travel there to see the games since they were in the Super Bowl. The team will make hundreds of thousands of $$$ on increased merchandise sales. Not to mention, imagine what a trip to the Super Bowl would do to support their cause of building a new stadium. On the reverse, if the Rams are winning, do you think there would be talk of moving the team? Let me help you out…NO!
I say all that to say it’s more than just a game. I’m not saying the threats are warranted and I don’t think they should be taken lightly. But I do understand where people are coming from with the anger. Everyone should realize that the game of football reaches farther than the yardage between the field goal posts…
On this team, we are all united in a common goal: to keep my job.
-- Lou Holtz
There was talk of the Jaguars moving to LA.
Khan, new owner, said that he was committed to the Jaguars AND the city of Jacksonville.

boston fans are the worst. with their small sample of recent success from the way they’re acting you’d think every team they have has been a dynasty for 2 decades

Wow, some people are just sick...
they should be ashamed of themselves. Wishing he and his family (kids and all) to die? Some fans have no class at all. I am sure the guy is absolutely miserable for what happened and now he has to get hate tweets?? Come on people, football isnt that important. Dont get me wrong, I am the most die hard football fan I know, but come on grow up!!!
Tone it down is an understatement.
Good take, man. Thought you might dig this.
