Mel Kiper: Cleveland Browns Will Draft Robert Griffin III

The NFL trade rumors are heating up already, and the 2012 NFL Draft is still three months away. On Thursday, Mel Kiper of ESPN boldly proclaimed that the Cleveland Browns will draft Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III. That could be good news to the St. Louis Rams since the Browns would likely have to trade up in order to land RG3.

Kiper holds out the possibility of the Browns drafting RG3 with their fourth pick, but with other teams, including the Dolphins and the Redskins, also thought the be interested, they may have no choice but to trade up. Kiper notes that the fourth spot would be an attractive one for the Rams since they would likely still be able to draft either USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil or Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon.

The fourth spot would be a fitting place for Blackmon, and Kalil would likely be gone, since he's considered to be the best prospect in the draft behind Andrew Luck and RG3.

Kiper's words carried the ring of inevitability.

I think they've pretty much resolved themselves to the fact they're going to go that route. They're probably going to kick Colt McCoy to the curb. That's what happens to a lot of young quarterbacks that don't have great physical qualifications.

Much could happen between then and now, and Kiper even notes the possibility of the Browns swinging a deal for Packers' backup Matt Flynn.

so they are going to kick Mccoy to the curb

for his physical characteristics but then go after Flynn who also has those same characteristics.

I really can’t believe the Browns are giving up on Mccoy already. There offense is awful. It’s just as bad as our offense is. Judging McCoy while playing with those players is a mistake imo.

If you have awful receivers and no rb no QB is going to be succesful.

How about all of those Saints fans clamoring for Williams' head and Spags' hire?

They couldn’t stand Gregg because of his constant blitzing packages, which really makes me question if they actually know what they’re getting into with Spags. Don’t get me wrong; I think he’ll do very well there, but it’s not like he’s installing a brand new system.

Why's that?

As long as Peyton and Brees are there, they will win.

Like I said...

Trade down, get both Brown’s 1st round picks, draft Blackmon and one of the Stanfurd lineman.

That would be ideal to me. A road grater lineman like Fisher wants (and we need) along with the playmaker WR we covet.

by Oski Bear on Jan 19, 2012 5:33 PM CST reply actions

That is definitely best case scenario for us.

Keep ya fingers crossed. If we can get both WR and OL help in the 1st round, that would really help us out. Then hopefully we can pick up some talent at DT and OLB.

Possible bad outcome on trading down - Beware!

… Some of my friends are Browns fans and are saying that the Browns may be interested in Blackmon also. What about if we trade down with Cleveland thinking they are going to take RGIII and either Kalil or Blackmon would be available to us but then the Browns select Blackmon and Kalil goes to Minnesota??? There is some risk here unless the Rams opt for selecting RGIII to trade it to the Browns right away just like it happened when the Chargers selected Eli Manning and traded him right away.

by abiRam on Jan 19, 2012 5:35 PM CST reply actions

lol dude they aren't giving up both 1st rounders for Blackmon

good god, he’s barely a top 5 or 6 pick(and many think he’s not top ten). If they were dumb enough to trade up for Blackmon and give us two first rounders we could take Mo Claiborne at 4 and a receiver like Floyd or Kendall Wright at 22.

Trading down is by far our best option and yes people are vastly overrating Blackmon he is not a AJ Green or Julio Jones type talent.

by mcpeepants23200 on Jan 19, 2012 5:43 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with you on Blackmon

I don’t even wanna draft him, I would rather try to get Wright or Floyd

by ChrisL951 on Jan 19, 2012 5:48 PM CST up reply actions

no way!

If they were to try something like that they would be shunned and no one would ever deal with them again. Not to mention kroenke and co would never allow a trade where it wasn’t set and stone knowing who they were picking up. Rams could take rg3 and deal him out tho.

The blackmon hype is at tebow level on tst

From what fishery had said o line is his priority. Geeze april plz code and go

by Ram_Redemption on Jan 19, 2012 5:39 PM CST via mobile reply actions

The last WR that Fish took in the 1st round was Kenny Britt, and he grabbed him 30th.

He has only took 1 other WR in the first round other than that, and it was Kevin Dyson (16th) back in ‘98. I think the odds are pretty damn good he isn’t going to take a WR in the top 10.

he's taken plenty of DEs with the first pick. Looks like we're getting Upshaw! lol

I like blackmon

But hope we trade with cleveland and get either Kalil or Claborne thats the best possible outcome for us I think.

by Friendo4507 on Jan 19, 2012 5:51 PM CST via mobile reply actions

At #4 overall

I’ll take any one of those three (Kalil, Blackmon, Claiborne). At #2 overall, we have to take Kalil, IMO..

by Joe Mazzi on Jan 19, 2012 5:54 PM CST up reply actions

I like em too

But we have a 50 milton dollar qb who played ten games cause he was hit so much! Dam what part of PROTECT THE QB (fishers words) don’t we understand.

by Ram_Redemption on Jan 19, 2012 5:56 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Kalil

doesn’t get past Minnesota. If Fisher wants to solidify the Offensive Line, he stands pat with the #2 pick. If not, he’ll trade down to follow whatever plan he has devised. Personally, I think this team needs to seriously upgrade the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball before moving onto the more skill positions. That would also give he skill players the best chance for success.

by Guitpik on Jan 21, 2012 11:41 AM CST up reply actions

I don't think we should trade down.

If we stand pat at #2, then BPA and our biggest need line up.

Trading down mediocrizes us.

by Midasknight on Jan 19, 2012 6:01 PM CST reply actions

yeah getting 2 first rounders would just be awful

I mean Blackmon/Griffin/Claiborne and a donnard/Wright/Sanu sounds much worse than getting just one of them.

derpity doo

by mcpeepants23200 on Jan 19, 2012 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

so you're saying that taking the #4 and #22 picks

instead of #2 ‘mediocrizes’ our draft? Taking three players in the first 33 picks doesn’t sound good to you? Blackmon will be available at 4, if that’s who you want. He could easily be picked by us at the 2 spot, or we could get ANOTHER first round pick and get him at #4. Mediocrity is up to those players, but anyone drafted in the top 33 stands a chance to be elite, and at a whole different level

by DCRamFan on Jan 19, 2012 7:18 PM CST up reply actions

It depends

on the drop off in talent. It also depends on where Fisher deems this team’s biggest need lies with the #2 pick. If he truly wants to develop an ‘elite’ OL and that is his biggest priority, he stands pat at #2 taking Kalil and possibly moving Jason Smith to LG. Also, if he feels the difference in talent between Blackmon and whoever is available with the first pick of the second round is somewhat negligible, he sticks at #2.

If getting a #1 WR or DB is more along his plan, he should trade down to gain additional picks and still pick one of the top players in the draft at one of (or both) of those positions. If the drop off in talent between Kalil and an OT at the top of the second round (or possibly lower half of the first round) is negligible, he should consider trading down.

by Guitpik on Jan 21, 2012 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

I agree

Why trade our pick keep RG 3 trade Bradford and get maybe more since he is a so called franchise QB, I my self dont think so Clevland would be good 4 him being that he did have a little game whith that coach when he was the rams offensive coach. RG will bring excitment and the RAMS and especially the fans need a new and different kinda football ala Vick, Newton, and Tebow!!!

by REDANT on Jan 19, 2012 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

Because

The Rams wouldn’t get much for Bradford. They pretty much have to stick with him and hope he pans out.

by DiscoJer on Jan 19, 2012 11:03 PM CST up reply actions

A Trade With The Browns

And The Rams still have a better than average chance to get Justin Blackmon.

by ValdezY on Jan 19, 2012 6:07 PM CST reply actions

We also have the first pick on day 2

Idk who will be there, but that’s always been talked about as great trade bait

I'm not suggesting this but

what if Fisher drafted RG3 with #2 pick. Traded Bradford for Clevelands #4 and # 22? Not saying this will happen. And I’m not suggesting that it would be good to do it. But what are ya’lls thoughts if it did happen?

by rambro4ever on Jan 19, 2012 9:54 PM CST reply actions

Why would they want Bradford?

McCoy played better than he did….not to mention Bradford is injury prone

by DiscoJer on Jan 19, 2012 11:02 PM CST up reply actions

Any qb would be injury prone behind this POS line..

Bradford + Blackmon = Secondaries Beware

by RG31 on Jan 19, 2012 11:04 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I don't see them trading Bradford, but...

Bradford was better in Shurmur’s offense than McCoy was.

by CFB_fan on Jan 20, 2012 2:19 PM CST up reply actions

I think it should be at least explored

I doubt that we’d get more for Sam than the pick for a couple reasons. Mostly the fact that Sam got the last ginormous rookie contract. It’s too big a commitment.

BUT, if someone out there is very interested, I think the team HAS to take a long cold calculating look at what he is worth.

I hate the Patriots, but I am jealous of their ability/willingness to drop/trade players at the margins of their value.

I do think when the dust clears we will have Sam back, of course. But if we don’t, I’m ok with that, too.

by Beelzebubba on Jan 20, 2012 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

Why ...

would fisher talk about Sam, & then trade? It’ll never happen.

lets trade down and get picks. Blackmon 4th, CB 22 nd pick tunia seventh round

Sounds good..

Bradford + Blackmon = Secondaries Beware

by RG31 on Jan 20, 2012 11:03 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

I'd rather take Claiborne at 4 and Wright at 22

if possible. Claiborne is a far better talent than Blackmon and personally I don’t see Blackmon being much better than Wright.

Blackman should be available then.

Luck,
Kalil,
RG3
Blackman to St. Louis.
Now, another trade landing us Jonathan Martin would be very smart, after Justin!
