Kalil vs Blackmon

I'm a fan of both Blackndmon and Kalil and beleive that both can make a difference to the Rams. But which pick is better?

Matt Kalil

Matt-kalil_medium

Matt Kalil is the best LT prospect since Jake Long or even Orlando Pace. Everybody knows how importent the LT positon is ever since LT came a along(if you call this a pun, it was intended). But when flashy plays by the QB, WR and RB happen, the left tackle is left in the dark. I think people on TST have become prone to wanting a first round wr so much they forget that for the GSOT, Isaac Bruce was a 2 rounder. The Packers Wrs are all selected after the first round and look at them now. Using GSOT as an example, sure Kurt Warner was superb, Bruce stunning, Thorry Holt amazing and Marshall Faulk simply being superman, but nobody thought about the o-line. Orlando Pace was a big reason the GSOT was the Greatest Show on Turf. He gave Warner time and Marshall Faulk space, for them to work their magic. And in these days, giving time for the QB is the Holy Grail of modern offensive football, as the Rams showed us this year. Our offense did well last year when Saffold played well along with the rest of the line(well mostly) so this year was a disapointement. Matt Kalil can defiently become another Orlando Pace, and help a new GSOT to be formed.

Justin Blackmon

When you think about balckmon, you think production. Yes his offense may have been pass friendly but you still need to be good to put up the numbers he did. He was a vital part of the fast scoring offense, that took about an average of a minute to score. The Rams average to score is two games. He can instantly light up our offense and give Sam a reliable option. This guy pitches a tent in the endzone every game, scoring almost more Tds then the whole rams offense did. He can take a small screen the distance or catch the deep one for 6 points. He does it all and could become the second coming of Thorry Holt. But thats not all. For those you who want the Rams to trade down, he is the best option, allowing the rms to get two 1 round picks, a second and maybe a third, along with a no.1 WR and still fill the need of LT later in the draft.

Now which one do I like? Well I like Matt Kalil better. Hes the better prospect, much like how Suh was considered the best prospect in 2010, but unlike Suh, he also fills a vital need. If Brandon Llyod Resign he has to be the pick, but even otherwise, good wrs like Dwight Jones or Sanu can be found later in the draft, with our No.1 Wr coming in 2013 (Robert Woods or Keenan Allen anyone?)

I Voted For Blackmon

Here is a couple of reasons why:

The offense has pieces in place at the “skill positions”: Bradford, SJAX, Lloyd Amendola. If you use FA picks for RB Mike Tolbert and OG Carl Nicks; you create a power aspect to the running that can protect Bradford by not having to throw all the time. Selecting Blackmon to this group can force a D to commit more players to coverage, which means fewer pass rushers; again another way to protect Bradford. Adding size to the O-Line(especially the interior), and eliminate the deep drops for Bradford, establishing a power element to the run game, can go a long way in protecting Bradford IMO.

I pick Kalil, Martin or Reif over Blackmon.

A strong O-line creates a power running game as well as protection for a passer. Routes take time to run and if a QB is getting hit every time he drops back, he will rush throws. The biggest issue is that Bradford was sacked more often than not by a player simply beating his man. Another reason is that I would like to see the Rams sign a top tier Teight End in Free agency and that will cost money. Look at the recent playoff games and you will see that the majority of the time, the tight end actually has more big plays than the big time receivers. Who was more valuable to the Niners, Vernon Davis or Michael Crabtree? My final reason is that this is a deep receiver draft. Blackmon put up big numbers, but I believe there are at least three other receivers in the draft who would have done the same in the same situation. There will be good receivers on the board in the late first or early second.

Salas put up big numbers also

he hasn’t worked out so well, yet. I’m not sure who to pick, I guess it will happen depending on the trade(s) etc.

Joe Thomas

is one of the best if not the best Tackle in the NFL. Look how well his team is doing with limited weapons….

Saffold did great in the WCO where he only had to worry about 3 and 5 step drops at worst. In McDumbass’s system he had to protect for 7 step drop backs, Jake Long would even do good in that system cause he isnt the best Pass protecting tackle.

With a new offense that doesnt require plays to take forever to develop Saffold will do good like he did his rookie year.

With that being said, i want Blackmon. Lloyd can be the new Bruce, Blackmon can be the new Holt.
If we took Kalil i would be a little disapointed but only cause i really want Blackmon, if we got kalil id understand why and wouldnt disagree with the Rams to draft him. he is a stud LT

i'm not sold on blackmon

luckily fisher will not get a receiver with the first pick. smart thing would be to trade it for a boatload of picks.

by hbwb on Jan 19, 2012 6:33 PM CST reply actions

May get shot down here

But would it be completely inconceivable to take Kalil at the number two spot and then using our other picks in the draft and maybe a second from the following year, trade back into the first round to take Decastro? We would then in one draft have more or less guaranteed a successful O line for years to come. Looking back at the previous drafts (and I know we all hope Fisher will have a better track record than Spags and Devaney) we didn’t really achieve anything with later picks anyway. In addition as I believe Fisher is in it for the long haul this would give him a perfect platform to add future weapons and be safe in the knowledge that Bradford is going to be fit enough to use them.

Also if we kept a cheeky sixth round pick DT Akiem Hicks is 6-foot-5, 324 pounds and very raw. Would be a nice project for the new coaching staff.

what you say is kind of far fetcted, to get both kalil and decastro but

what about this: trade with the browns for 2 first, a third and a second. and we take decastro and martin in the first and peter kronz in the seond. we get 3 quality lineman at OG,OT,C. In the second second we get dwight jones. In the third we get travis lewis and lamicheal james/chris polk/montee ball. in the fourt a big DT and your DT in the sixth. some developmental TE in the 7th. rough idea but we get three starting lineman, one no.2 wr, one starting OLB, A change of pace back who could also be jacksons succesor, a startable DT and a raw, high potential DT and TE.

I'm torn down the middle on them

ideally I’d love the Rams to come away from the draft with a no1 WR and a starting LT. I’d be happy with any OT from the bunch of Kalil, Reiff or Martin and a WR from Blackmon, Jeffery or Floyd
