RB with a 1st Round Pick?

I know most of the talk around here has consisted of either OL or WR with our 1st round pick in this years draft. I am a proponent of going WR either with a trade down or with #2 overall. What about RB? Trent Richardson has declared and I could really see him being the perfect back to spell Jackson and be his eventual replacement. As an SEC fan, I spent way too much time watching football this year; particularly from the boys in Crimson and White. This guy is ridiculous! I mean, wow, have you seen some of the stuff he has done?

Check out this write-up on the Bleacher Report:

Star-divide

Did you watch the video? Last year I was dying to get Mark Ingram for our backfield. This year, I believe Richardson to be an even better prospect. Trading down in this year's draft should be our move this year. If the Dolphins don't select Richardson with their pick once we are down in the order we could pick him up and maybe even have a chance at Blackmon, Wright, or A.J.

Of course this leaves the void wide open of our need at OL. Who could we get later in the draft to fill that need?

Perhaps Martin, Adams, Sanders, Datko, or Potter will be available. Who knows where we will be positioned after trading down with that #2 pick of ours? This could very well be a possibility.

What about OL in free agency? (from footballsfuture.com)

Any number of these guys could be grabbed by our new FO before the draft even begins, or they could be involved in a trade with that #2 pick. Just some thoughts. Like I stated at the beginning, I would like the Rams to snag a WR with the pick with a trade down for more, but why not consider the future of the RB position with this draft?

i pretty much dismiss anything written by BL as shit

and now, I don’t want Trent, we have way bigger needs. Hope Polk falls to the 3rd

That would be ideal.

I would love for Polk to fall that far, however I don’t think that will happen. He is too valued to fall that far. I agree the article I linked wasn’t great, I was mostly looking for a good video showcasing Trent Richardson highlights.

They will notice and they will giggle.

Let's play GM

First I think we could trade our #2 to the Cleveland Browns for their #4 and #23. We can get Richardson there at #4.

In turn we trade the #23 pick, 3rd rounder 2012 and 1st rounder in 2013 for Miami’s #8 pick. With that we should be able to pick up either one of the top 3 WR prospects or, perhaps Riley Reiff is still there to snag.

I don’t pretend to be a draft guru, I can just tell you that for far too long we have put off finding Jacksons replacement. I think the FO should give a hard look at it. If we don’t find the MAN this year we risk running into the same situation the Colts had at QB this year; an aging running back who could be taken out at any moment with no capable back-up in place. Does anyone really think that Cadillac is our best option? And who is out there in free agency this year?$$$$$ Payton Hillis, Marshawn Lynch, Matt Forte, Arian Foster, or Ray Rice?

And out of those we run into the problem of paying someone lots of money, something that one could argue will cost more than a 1st rounder in the end.

They will notice and they will giggle.

Coupla points:

1. I would NEVER trade next year’s first round pick for anything in the world. We will probably be in the top 10 again. That would be foolish IMO.
2. We are still rebuilding so we need to trade down, not trade up.
3. I don’t believe we need a Steven Jackson anymore. RB by committee is how things go nowadays. Richardson at #4 would be a bad pick.
4. You’re right that we do need to address the RB position. SJ is not a playmaker anymore.

I love reading the draft stuff, keep it coming.

Go Big

or Go Home is kinda my style. I will agree that the pick would be risky, but we have played it safe in the draft for a while now and have a LB, DE, and QB to show for it. Not counting 39 cause he has been here for a hot minute.

If we trade further back like you advise, where do you see us landing further back and who should we go after with that spot?

They will notice and they will giggle.

by papapegasus on Jan 17, 2012 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

No no no no

a thousand times no. Don’t trade away our #1 pick next year unless you can get the equivalent of that pick. Coupling it with anothe4r first rounder this year to move up is a move a team who’s 1 player away from a superbowl contender would do. That’s not risky, that’s just wreckless. Cleveland isn’t trading 2 1st rounders to move up 2 spots. It’s not happening. Holmgren doesn’t work that way.

If we get an offer from a team for the 2nd overall pick that increases our ability to add playmakers in the first 3 rounds this year or an extra 1st rounder next year without dropping out of the top 10, then take it. Otherwise it’s Kalil and next round please.

I'm sorry, man that came off as pompous and assholic

I do suffer from that delusion and it makes me say things like that. I know better than that, I’d probably not handle it nearly as diplomatically as you did.

I beg to differ
SJ is not a playmaker anymore.

Not only is he the only playmaker on the roster, he’s the team’s leader

Agreed

He still had lots left, but who steps in for 15 games if he goes down week 1? And that’s my main point, be it RB by committee or stud replacement, we have not.

Love that animation BTW!!!!!!!!!!!!

by papapegasus on Jan 17, 2012 12:21 PM CST up reply actions

that's the problem with the Rams

they have 1 playmaker (Lloyd doesn’t count yet, cause he might leave) and that’s pretty sad in the NFL
Yeah Lynch has beast mode, we have predator mode.

I'm not saying he's not a great leader.

But he is NOT a big time playmaker anymore.

how can you say that?

he got 1000 yards and he was out for basically 3 games and i don’t think he was 100% a couple more games. He is still the predator we know. Oh and he achieved that with the O-Line that EVERYONE will agree is complete shit besides Dahl

by sergey606 on Jan 17, 2012 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

How often did he make a big play?

Once on the second carry in the first game of the season? He’s not fast enough anymore to break a big run. He’s a great leader and a very good bell cow but he is not a big time playmaker anymore IMO.

he breaks off a huge run at least once a game

even that seahawks game he broke one off that McD and co. fucked-up.

Ok

Then I guess our definitions of huge are just different.

That eliminates the confusion and we’re both right.

Your Opinions

Are fine. Not everyone is going to agree with them. It is how you see things that matter. I would have no problem with the Rams trading down with a generous compensation package. If they selected Richardson after they trade down, that would be great depending on how far they fell and who was still on the board. The draft is a nutty process where anything is likely to happen! Great Post!

by ValdezY on Jan 17, 2012 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

In this scenario if we trade down with Cleveland to get Richardson and then back up

we could take Blackmon at #4 and Richardson at #9(I believe he falls a bit draft day). Top WR AND RB in the draft. 2 Playmakers for the offense in the first round. And to those that say no to Richardson(and I hate to say this) we are still rebuilding and I don’t see a Superbowl for Jackson as a Ram. He’s getting up there in age and we need to be thinking about a replacement. Don’t get me wrong Jackson is a beast and the backbone of our offense but how many more seasons can he do it alone? WE NEED PLAYMAKERS! Go Rams!

if we don't get polk

who’s coming out next year? SJax has a couple years left in his tank and I want our future back to have one year under him; i just thinking drafting a RB in the first with a stud like SJax is kinda expensive for a back-up with all our needs

Beating off the dog is never appropriate when we have company over...... I mean EVER!

by sergey606 on Jan 17, 2012 11:35 AM CST reply actions

Not a back up

split carries with him. Jackson plays 3 downs and plays through injuries but look at him playing fresh and while splitting reps with the rookie maybe we get a couple extra years out of him.

by jmo53 on Jan 18, 2012 9:05 AM CST via Android app up reply actions

I think we oughta get a shifty playmaker this year.

LaMichael James or Polk, like you said. We should be able to get that guy at the top of the 3rd round. We should spend our first and 2nd rounders on OT/OG/WR.

Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is where the Stanley Cup can be found.

by Pekka for Predator Pontiff on Jan 17, 2012 11:56 AM CST reply actions

Agreed

I think LaMicheal could go in the 4th so we could spend our first 3 rounds on them positions that you mentioned (if there wasn’t a trade)

RB or ???

As I stated a couple of days ago, drafting down with Clevleand is best with all the needs we have. If Clevleand, Minnesota or Miami or Washington wants to call our bluff, draft RG III with the second pick and then trade. The issue is none of them feel we will draft RG III and are willing to trade with whoever may draft him. What do we need in the draft or through FA? Just about everything. An OL with attitude, defensive tackles that can fill the hole and so CL and RQ are not double or triple teamed on the outside. A change of pace RB. I will always love SJ being able to watch him in school in Vegas we all knew he was special. Despite his heart, the hits do take their toll. I believe he can still get 1,000 yards being rested more. A deep threat besides Lloyd yes, BUT, remember last years draft? How many of us were "get help for Sam? We did. After 2010 a year of some major injuries, who knew 2011 would be worse? What would 2011 have reaped for Sam if he, Kendricks, Sals, Pettis and Amedola were never injured and Clayton fully recovered. Clayton will not be back in 21 and its a shame he is so injury prone. But what about all the others? do we anticipate all of them being injured on and off in 2012? I pray not. So why keep the 2 pick for Blackmon? We can get him at 4 if we REALLY need to plus another later in the round. Now, what do we have at RB? SJ and CW. What if one or both are injured again like last year or the year before. WE NEED an RB. I hate to see an RB pass us by in the first round or via a trade if we take RG III like we did when we skipped on Barry Sanders. How many of you remember that?
Richardson is and will be a better RB than Ingram. His peripheral vision is way above average and he has a great change of direction. If not him because he is gone of the front office people feel he is not a fit, then a young RB similar to him. SJ has the leadership and heart to be the man that the Rams listen to but no one can stop the injuries along with age from catching up to them.
What do you think?

by Ramsince'63 on Jan 18, 2012 7:10 PM CST reply actions

Not sure on RGIII

as far as drafting him. I dont think it will give us the leverage we think it will. We stand to get more out of the #2 pick by trading down. If we do draft him amd seek a trade that gives the other team more leverage as they can basically say, screw you, you can keep your new qb and we will keep our picks. Best case scenario I think we would get their 1st round pick along with a few later round picks and possibly a 2nd rounder for 2013. That’s if we draft him and try to trade.

They will notice and they will giggle.
