Are we sure that we want to use the #2 pick on a WR?
Cold Hard Football Facts say that you should never draft a WR this high unless they are the finishing touch on an otherwise complete team, which obviously the Rams are far from being. Premium WRs don't touch the ball enough times in a game to truly make a difference e.g. Julio Jones/Roddy White or Calvin Johnson in the wild card games at the weekend. Discuss please...

The only position worth a high pick is a QB but the Rams already have one....so
the questioin is after the QB what’s the next position that is worth the a high pick and to me that’s receiver.
I still disagree...
You can’t score points unless you have WR that run good routes and can catch the ball. And seriously Calvin Johnson, have you seen the man this year? I think it has been their defense that has let them down. Games basically become shootouts, which I prefer by the way. I would rather have a shootout with both teams in the 40 point range than have the score a 6 to 3. I will restate my claim, get a WR please!!!! It has only been since, oh I don’t know, Torry Holt that we have had a #1 receiver. Look where that got us. Oh yeah, the Super Bowl. WR, WR, WR, WR, WR
Calvin Johnson broke records
and was one of the only reasons Detroit was even in that game into the third quarter – I totally disagree with this
Point is though,
despite how awesome Johnson was, they still lost the game, ergo shiny hood ornament.
DUDE> seriously Heid...??
did you see the game? listen i may agree on you saying blackmon isnt worth a second overall pick. cause im pretty sure we can trade down and still take him; but that is another story. Are you aware of what a season Calvin Johnson had? He is a MAJOR reason why the Lions were even there playing for a divisonal playoff birth. Give your head a shake man, saying a WR isnt worth a second overall pick is ludacris. They have the potential to change games! Sure there have been busts: ie Charles Rodgers… however it was Millen calling the shots for Detriot at that time. BUT in defence look who was picked right after him: Sir Andre Johnson. And your telling me you wouldnt use a second overall pick to have a PREMIUM WR playmaker?? jeez.
In Sam We Trust.

A few options
1. Draft a WR with the #2 pick.
2. Trade down for more picks, still drafting a WR with a 1st round pick.
3. Trade for or outright sign a good FA WR.
This team has drafted CB, DL, OL, QB, and on and on in the 1st round for what seems like forever. We should have taken a RB last year, but conventional wisdom bit us in the ass with Robert Quinn.
This year people are high on yet another lineman, and a few on a certain LB. We cannot afford to sit on our heels yet again and allow the few great WRs in this first round to slip away.
Am I wrong, or don’t you need a vertical threat + an over the middle ball hawk to stretch the field to take the pressure off the running game and vice versa? Yeah I get the “we need OL help to solidify the run/pass blocking game”. I just think that for far too long now this team has been a paper tiger when it comes to the passing game. Drafting Blackmon will give us that threat we have been lacking along with DA coming back and hopefully a few 2nd year WRs/TE who can get their head out of their ass.
Besides, Jackson is getting to the point where he cannot shoulder this offense any longer. He needs defenders to not load the box every play in order to bust off that magic 3.8 yp carry we require. Drafting that #1 WR will pay huge dividends this season and even more so in the future.
Anyone have Torry Holts #?
They will notice and they will giggle.
Top 10 WRs definitely have to have something dominant about them
I’m a 49er fan and the Crabtree pick was very unnerving at the time ( fun, but unnerving ).
That being said, I don’t ascribe to the whole “you should be picking a QB, Pass rusher, Corner, or OT” logic anymore. Now that the salaries are sane, you should be picking the player you best think is going to be a 14 year starter and 6 time pro bowler so long as they aren’t a kicker, punter, or running back.
Specifically, I don’t think that is Blackmon this year. I also don’t think that the OTs are all that special, but if they were to think Khalil is going to be pro bowler and a 14 year starter, then they should take him and not worry about trading down or trying to get cute. Getting extra picks gets a lot of publicity and back pats during the draft, but when those players are backups and gone in 3 years no one cares.
Draft: 1. Kendall Wright 2. Trumaine Johnson
FA: Smith, Morgan, Brooks, Rogers, Snyder

rams need talent and playmakers across the board
and they need it so badly on offense that it hurts. you always look at the inverse when choosing a position; let me explain. you need to stop the other teams QB, so you pass rush. conversely, you need to protect your own QB, hence a LT. if WRs arent that valuable or important a position, why would CB be important in the draft? we need to give sam bradford some weapons, and we need to do it now. unless we trade down, i just dont see the kinda talent at a position of such dire need.

I never thought of that. Great point about the CB.

We have good talent at CB
BFB, Bartell (he’ll be back), Murphy, Gordy, and Hood. There is absolutely no reason for the Rams to take a CB, unless the dude is a prolific punt and kick returner.
Blackmon or Kalil good #2 choice.
I think that either of these is an excellent selection at #2. So is RGIII. If I was Cleveland, I wouldn’t trade up unless we actually drafted RGIII. If we have the bird in hand (RGIII), then the Browns would have to trade to get what they need. If we don’t draft him, the Browns will wait. Then, if the Vikes Take RGII. they could possibly trade to a situation where they will get Blackmon or Kalil and a later pick to like Martin, Reif or other OL or WR. So my choice is to select RGIII in order to maximize trade potential. Plus, I’m not afraid to keep him to generate competition at QB and change up the O. Maybe Sam needs that pressure.
No!
No no!
I agree we could bring in another QB for competition/backup (see 2011 Colts) but not using our #1 pick on a QB. A nice backup is def something the new regime needs to consider.

I seriously doubt Cleveland trades up for RG3. They have a ton of picks to use
and I think they are of the opinion that they can surround Colt McCoy with talent and see how it goes. If he still sucks, deal with it next year or in F.A. If RG3 slides to them, they may pick him, if not, I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade down for even more picks. I actually wish they would at least give the impression they would trade up so the Skins and Phins will start talking moves as well.
As we get closer to go time
I think the back and forth will pick up a bit. We will see things solidify after FA opens and come draft day the buz is going to be palpable about RGIII and the trade possibilities. I think at the end of the day the Rams will find a trade partner to go down and grab more picks while still getting our go to WR.

RGIII is for trade value.
The trading partner we want is Cleveland right? Because they have the sexiest picks. But Why would they trade with us if we don’t actually have RGIII? Once we have him, At least 3 teams (Browns, Fins, Hawks, Skins) NEED him. Browns will wait until they have to trade to get him. However the other teams would probably trade up. The problem is those other teams don’t have all the beauty draft choices that Browns have. I see drafting RGIII as the only way for us to get Blackmon AND a quality 1st round OL. But, you always have to keep in mind that the trade won’t work out. So I don’t think it would be the worst thing in the world to put some pressure on Mr. B.
I agree partially
Im ok with first round recievers.but never top ten. If you won 2games out of 16 WR should be last on your list. We lead the league and sacks allowed and rushing yards aloud. Fix the lines first. And to people who argue calvin. I would take him cause he is ridiculous, but even he had only had one playoff game in his career. same with andre. Its fun to see them abuse db’s but like the article said even rice only touched the ball 4 times a game
