St. Louis Rams 2011 Scrimmage Play-by-Play/Notes
More from the St. Louis Rams scrimmage today courtesy of Ram Buck, aka @lannyosu. Big thanks.
Hello Rams fans,
I sure hope you are inside on this blazing Sunday in St. Louis. With temperatures nearing 100 degrees (Fahrenheit of course), the 2011 St. Louis Rams took the field at Lindenwood College for a scrimmage. There was some good and some bad, to be expected since the team has really only had 1 week of practice and is still installing a new offense. Let me just say this: our defense is possessed this year, and ready to go, while our offense is still building its' new identity.
Several notable players sat on the sidelines, mainly for precautionary reasons (with the exception of Jerome Murphy, who is out indefinitely with an ankle injury). Those players were Mike Hoomanawanui, David Vobora, Danario Alexander, Greg Salas and Donnie Avery. It is expected that they will be cleared to play this coming Saturday. Ron Bartell sat out this scrimmage for unknown reasons, perhaps to let other guys get a shot at CB.
With lots of WR's sidelined, that meant more looks for Austin Pettis, Brandon Gibson and Mike Sims-Walker. Two of those three did well; one wished he could have a do-over. More after the jump.

1st and 10: Sam fires a bullet to Danny for 11 yds

Whew! and there you have it. Some ups, and some downs.
1) Sam looked a bit rusty, but most of his passes were fairly crisp.
2) Austin Pettis had a down day, by his standards, but should bounce back.
3) Billy Bajema made the most of his time.
4) Mike Sims-Walker started to emerge a bit more with his targets.
5) Our 1st team defense was relentless on the 2nd team offense, sacking them at least 6 times.

Nice job Ram Buck
now I’m going to have to be creative in my article because you almost covered everything
You can follow me on Twitter @brandonbirkhead.
Makes you wonder
if this is our offense looking a little rusty or just some REALLY good defense.

I think both.
Defense should be much further ahead at this point (third year as opposed to first).

probably a bit of both
"Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds."
Id say a combo of both
Obviously our offense is going to be rusty with a new OC and players but our defense is pretty good not great though. Liked what I saw today.
Our defense is just on the same page
After 3 years. And you insert Robert Quinn, Justin Bannan, Quintin Mikell, Al Harris, and the other vets, you’ve got yourself a solid defense who won’t be surprised by tomfoolery :)

1st string offense wasn't bad at all IMO, not exciting or intricate yet but improved over last year at least
2nd string offense is WAY behind the 1st team defense.
Best improvement is in the redzone.
Yeah
that was my first thought from this play-by-play. That’s great news.

broad question here
why dont they ever do 1st team offense Vs 1st team defense, 2nd team offense Vs 2nd team defense, etc.?

My guess is to increase the level of competition for at least 1 side

because the defense is further enough along to disrupt the offense
The offense needs reps with resistance but our defensive starters would probably supply a nonproductive level of resistance at this point. And since the defense also needs reps the second offense is there for the flogging.

Hopefully Pettis can Reedem himself
As for everything else looks like the offense is a bit rusty which is expect seeing as they haven’t had too many practices with each other and I think they’ll get better. Looks like the Defense can stop the run pretty well and came up with some good plays on the rush and interceptions.
Sam Bradford to Austin Pettis
Kinda has a ring to it
Yea it was kinda hard to look at
I’m hoping that he can bounce back and his hands become an asset here, it’s no use to show them in practice but not in games.
Sam Bradford to Austin Pettis
Kinda has a ring to it
I am kind of worried, because lets be honest Mountain West coverage isn't all that impressive
and it looked like a lot of his troubles were from the fact that the coverage was tight on him for every pass.
Yes that worries me to
Hopefully he does good in next weeks game against the Colts or he’s in trouble.

Boise, were Pettis played, was actually in the WAC
This year will be their first year in the Mountain West. Next year Nevada Wolfpack and Fresno St Bulldogs will be in the Mountain West also.

I suspect the ram’s are not the only ones with rust issues and that the pre-season games will be used to fine tune some thing’s. The team’s that may not have any rust or hardly any rust would be the patriot’s and the colt’s. The patriot’s because they have been under the same system and coach forever and colt’s cause payton manning has always improvised on the scrimmage line.
Good to hear that Sims-Walker is contributing!
Check out my card collecting blog at www.cccollecting.blogspot.com!
Dahl with some extracurricular activity huh?
I love his toughness and nastiness, but he needs to watch that crap. We don’t want him getting us any bone head personal fouls like our old friend Incognito.
Two things about me will never change. I will always root for the Rams, and I will always root against the Niners.

Feely does not sound like an NFL QB
Credit the 1st team defense for good play. But it sounds like a lot of the 2nd team O’s problems stemmed from Feely.
How many picks did he give up?
I think I counted about 6 from the above play-by-play. Yikes – I hope Sam stays healthy.
Thank goodness he didn't. He was worst last year.
But he wasn’t brought in to actually play, but to give Sam a mental lift if Sam needed it (he didn’t)
sounds like Jabara Williams is doing well..
..hopefully he can turn out to be a pleasant surprise at OLB.
I'm suffering from an extreme case of laurinaitis!
