Rams make more roster moves

The St. Louis Rams re-signed wide receiver Mark Clayton today. That decision required a corresponding roster move to keep them at the 80-man limit. CB Jerome Murphy was placed on injured reserve, ending his 2011 season, to make room for Clayton. Devaney and the front office did not stop there either.

CB Marquis Johnson was added to the PUP list. A seventh-round pick last year, Johnson never saw action in training camp, recovering from offseason knee surgery. He will be eligible to return after week six. With a great deal of successful experience as a nickel corner during his playing days at Alabama, the Rams must have enough faith in Johnson to see what he can offer later this season and beyond.

Taking Johnson's spot on the roster is DT Marlon Favorite, an undrafted rookie in 2009 who played his college ball at LSU. Wait, he played his college ball at LSU? That means 3k ought to know something about the guy. Since being signed and released as a UDFA by the Panthers in 2009, Favorite has been on pretty much every roster in the league, so it seems. He spent a week on the Rams' practice squad in 2009, so the team at least knows what they're getting.

UPDATE: Clayton is on the PUP list for now, according to Howard Balzer at 101 ESPN. The Rams will have to decide by Saturday's roster deadline whether or not he stays there until week 6. If he does start the season on the PUP, he can't start practicing until week 6, remember. Players on the PUP cannot be activated or begin practicing until week 6. Once players resume practice, the team has three weeks to activate them.

I'm sorry to see anybody hurt. But my gut tells me Murph just wasn't gonna make it anyway.

He and Milyard were our draft pick flops of 2010… Just like Pettis and Salas MAY be for 2011. I wonder if some team would tradeus their 2012 #2 pick for our 3rd & 4th?? We seem to strike gold with the 2nd pick and belly flop in rounds 3-7.

He has a total of 2 tackles and hasnt broken more than a 30 yd return but somehow we need this guy on our team! Ill tell ya what he probably is the best WR we have on our team especially with his proven production! Idk why anyone can honestly believe that Gilyard isn’t a huge draft success!

Marvelous assessment of Milyard's ST contributions.

The FO is just trying to find a way to hang onto him to save face cause he was a poor draft pick.

by RamChop on Aug 31, 2011 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions

what are you basing that off of?

All the extensive time you have spent in training camp? Murphy was definitely going to make the team. Salas? Wondering if you have a pulse at this point.

by gomer7 on Aug 31, 2011 5:36 PM CDT up reply actions

No way Murphy was gonna get cut.

Furthermore, this is eerily similar to the Fletcher situation. Sucked his first year and everyone was bitching cause he was a huge bust and shouldn’t have been drafted where he was, etc. Then he tore his ACL and he comes back in his second season and had what we all would consider a pretty damn good year. Now we’re all hopeful that he’s one of the best young corners in all of football

Y’all need to quit bagging on the rookies and young players. Gilyard, Salas and Pettis come to mind in particular.

Not talking to Gomer, just making a comment to all the impatient morons out there.

George Selvie?

Fendi “I have potential” Onobun?

Uh-Oh?

They’re all 5th rounders or later. Not so bad.

The truth is always the right answer....

by Pekka for Predator Pontiff on Aug 31, 2011 6:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Pretty dang bad.

None of these guys have done anything of note. And some may not even make the team. Selvie at 6’4" 245 is waaay to small to be an NFL DE. Even though some have claimed he’s gained 5-10 lbs (unsubstantiated), what chance has he got against a 300 lb+ OT?

by RamChop on Aug 31, 2011 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Selvie had 2 sacks last year....

….which is as many or more than Cam Thomas, Glenn Dorsey, Brandon Mebane, Everson Griffen, Brian Price, Jared Odrick, Ron Brace and Brodrick Bunkley. All these guys were higer picks than Selvie, by a lot, and much more highly respected although Selvie had more sacks. What more could you want out of a 7th round pick?

And Josh Hull is the backup ILB and has played quite well for us in the preseason. Again, what more could you want out of a 7th round pick.

And Sims is at least still on the team as is Scott. Problem is that you’re choosing your spots to criticize and not giving the whole picture.

The late round pick glass is more than half full Ramchop.

The truth is always the right answer....

by Pekka for Predator Pontiff on Sep 1, 2011 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

One of my concerns is that I don't want my team to have to play very many 6-7th rounders or UDFA's.

My philosophy on 7th rounders is just that I don’t realistically expect them to play up to NFL level. While there are a very few notable exceptions, the vast majority fail in the NFL. Look at some of our recent picks and think “how would I like to field a Ram team comprised of…Keith Null, Obog, Davis, Onobun, Selvie, Scott, Sims, Johnson, Pettis, Salas, Williams, Milyard, Murphy, Hull, Kehl, Chamberlain, Vobora, King…etc?”

by RamChop on Sep 1, 2011 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

inaccurate assessment of talent

Selvie and Hull were definitely worth their picks. Projecting their develoment to continue as it has been would have them as valuable contributors in their 3rd year, where most guys actually reach their potential.

What chance does he have? Seriously? Well, his forte’ is speed, and just like an OLB he would beat the 300 pound guy by blowing by him.

by CoachConnors on Sep 1, 2011 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I gotta disagree

Our depth chart is full of guys who can play now and most of those guys are player we drafted. I like what we’re doing. I think this year Josh mcdaniels might have had too much say so in draft room matter but Salas appears solid with the potential to be a contributor and thats what you hope for in the forth round. Update means we could hang onto either Avery or Alexander

IR Alexander and keep Avery, replacing him with Clayton when he gets injured again. Sorry Gilyard still no room for you. Luckily you will stick with another team and relieve us of the burden of making this decision again next year

Wolf. Wolfgang Wolf

by dbcouver on Aug 31, 2011 4:56 PM CDT reply actions

Wait, so if Clayton is on the PUP list he wouldn't count against the 53-man roster for 6 weeks.

So basically it could allow the Rams to keep 7 wideouts not including Clayton to see who separates himself. There’s been basically no separation between Avery, Alexander, and Gilyard this camp but if they let that battle continue to week 6 by only cutting one of those guys, they can make a decision on who the other guy to cut is based on performance and health. You can cut Gilyard now because he sucks, then see how Alexander and Avery do. Both those guys have shown inconsistent production in the past and are coming off big knee injuries, so they are the likely guys the last spot comes down to. When Clayton comes back after 6 weeks (or perhaps longer), then you make the last cut.

by StopSpe on Aug 31, 2011 4:58 PM CDT reply actions

Avery is clearly above Gilyard and so is Alexander

the only problem is Danario is extremely injury prone and cant be counted on to be healthy. Gilyard sucks and is gone.

by Horcrux7 on Aug 31, 2011 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions

So basically we can temporarily keep 7 receivers not counting Clayton.

See who earns their spot in the regular season Maybe Alexander and Avery both get cut. Maybe Gibson isn’t as good as we think and gets cut. Depending on how well everybody plays we either keep 7 receivers by cutting 1 when Clayton comes back, or we go down to 6 by cutting two.

If Clayton isn’t healthy by Week 6, can he stay on the PUP list? Or does the PUP list not exist after week 6 and he would have to count on the 53-man roster?

by StopSpe on Aug 31, 2011 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions

they have 3 weeks after week 6 to start practicing

and then they have 3 weeks to activate him once he starts to practice..otherwise he has to stay on the PUP list all season from my understanding

by richter122 on Aug 31, 2011 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I think this is a great situation.

Because there’s really been no separation between Alexander, Avery, and Gilyard. Cut Gilyard because he’s never been good, then keep Alexander and Avery to have a prolonged battle. We’ll really see who separates himself when the games count.

Perhaps that's the case.

But why not keep Alexander around when it doesn’t really cost us? He provides good depth when healthy, and what if something bad happens to another receiver? What if somebody tears his ACL, or what if Avery isn’t completely healthy? There’s not much risk to keeping Alexander at least until Clayton comes back.

I think it’s a good move put MC89 on the PUP list until he’s ready to go. We all know we’ll need him before the season is done and he played well, with his time with Sammy, last yr. It’s going to be real interesting when we find out who the coaches are going to keep.

Gosh why don’t you ‘splain it to me Pyle so I’ll be knowledgeable? Meanwhile, forget the “Chop List” that has been so eerily accurate this year. Don’t consider that Chop said we needed to be rid of guys like Bulger, Barron, Incognito, McMichaels, Obog, Gado, Burton, Null, Pisa and a host of players long ago, and guess what? They’re all gone. And forget the dude who said we made some terrible draft picks like Smith (2nd overall), Milyard, Murphy, Hall Davis, Null, Pettis, Salas, Scott, Sims, etc. Some Chopper dude even defended Mike Vick and wanted to sign him when everyone except Andy Reid hated the guy who just signed $100M contract. Chop also couldn’t stand a guy named Pat Shurmur. Who was it that said we needed OLBx2, RG, DT, b/u RB? Yep, the FO has done just about everything I hoped for and recommended except getting a true #1 WR. So yeah, I don’t know nuthin’ about Ram fb and need an expert like you to help me out. NOT!

There were people all over this site...

that were Bulger apologists and those who wanted to keep nutcase Incognito. Some thought Barron should stay cause he wasn’t ever injured. Even Van was defending Vobora right up to the day he was released. I called Smith as an under-performer since his 1st camp. I’ve been an outlier with my predictions and philosophy among the TST faithful with has led to many many arguments. But the bottom line is that the team has moved precisely in the direction I had hoped for – except we still don’t have a #1 WR.

by RamChop on Aug 31, 2011 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree we don't have a #1 WR.

But do we really need one? I think with the talent we have at the WR, TE and RB positions it will be hard for any team(including the Eagles) to cover them all. I also believe Bradford will be on his game and be able to find a mismatch or two in every play. Of course all this is barring injury.

All hope is lost when you let doubt creep in....

by Sanchez559 on Aug 31, 2011 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

To be honest it's so easy to find someone to disagree with and then try to point out when your right and they are wrong.

Smith is barely entering his 3rd year. Yes, he has under-performed. But in this league it’s “What can you do for me now?” more than “What have you done for me lately?” You mentioned Pettis and Salas as being terrible picks a couple posts ago. How can you judge them if they haven’t even seen the regular season yet? Let alone the fact that they had a shortened off-season due to lock-out. Take that into consideration then hit me up mid-season and we will chat about these two and their progress.

All hope is lost when you let doubt creep in....

by Sanchez559 on Aug 31, 2011 11:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I consider the Pettis and Salas picks to be inane. We already had a stable of #2 and #3 WR's.

So why did we need to add more??? The #1 type WR receivers we really needed got gone in the 1st round (Green and Julio). Now one or both of these guys is gonna get cut or go to the ps OR either Milyard, Avery or DX are gone to make a place for them. Meanwhile, we didn’t, and still don’t, have a single good young b/u O-Lineman or OLB. The 3rd and 4th picks could’ve been much better utilized IMO.

by RamChop on Aug 31, 2011 11:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Not every team is stacked with #2 & #3 DB's.

Every team has it’s weakness. It’s just part of the game. I’ll agree that we need good back-ups on the o-line and at OLB. Leber is not spectacular but you won’t find him out of place in the scheme and he’s almost a lock to stay healthy. Something we all often overlook is the fact that we have arguably the best current offensive and defensive minds coaching both sides. McDaniels will prepare our playbook for each opponent differently and attack their weaknesses. Same with Spags.

Think about it……..
RB = Jackson, Williams, Norwood
TE = Kendricks, Illinois Mike, Bajema, Uh Oh
WR = SkyWalker, Clayton, Avery, Amendola, Gibson, Salas, (Pettis)
that last one is 7th WR or PS

RamChop's a smart fella and I appreciate that he puts his dick on the chopping block more often than some would like him to.

But you’ve been wrong too.

1. I believe you wanted Sue over Bradford, thereby making you a Bulger apologist also.
2. The Vick thing is irrelevant, although you did suggest we should pick him up, cause we have a franchise QB now. Just think, last year Vick would never have seen the field and all this hysteria over him would have been for naught.
3. You didn’t like the Saffold pick.
4. You didn’t like the Quinn pick.
5. You call Long and Smith busts.
6. Much of the criticisms you have for the Rams FO is based on rookie performances last year. That’s unfair cause you gotta wait for the youngsters to develop, which doesn’t occur at a uniform rate in everybody. If I recall correctly, you also used to bash Fletch last year, and now he’s one of the best young corners in the game.

I like you Chop and think much of some of your original opinions. But you’re also an alarmist.

The truth is always the right answer....

by Pekka for Predator Pontiff on Sep 1, 2011 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough.

(1) I am on record as having wanted Suh as 1st pick and Vick as our QB. I still think those two could’ve made invaluable contributions to our team. Vick and SJax in the same backfield would’ve been a nightmare for opposing defenses. A D-Line with Suh, Hall, Robbins and the much hyped Chris Long would’ve been awesome.

(2) I wanted Vick when he was considered a hated has-been and could’ve been had cheap. I was right.

(3) I was totally wrong about Saffold. He turned out to be a gem. Just like Smith turned out to be an over-hyped, overpaid, soft-headed average RT.

(4) I still don’t like the Quinn pick. The “health” concern will always be with him if he plays for a decade. I would have preferred Luiget.

(5) Smith (see description above) and Long were both 1st round picks and the 2nd and 3rd highest paid players on the team. Neither man has lived up to expectations. Long’s 29 tackles and 8.5 sacks don’t impress me much. Don’t see anyone clamoring to invite Smith or Long to the pro-bowl. Orlando Pace and Nadamakong Suh, they ain’t.

(6) Rookie performance can tell you alot. We think Sam is a superstar cause he led a 26th ranked offense last year against the weakest schedule in the league. Sometimes FO’s make bad picks. And this one has made a plethora, even while picking 2nd and 1st overall. Aside from JL, Sam, Saffold and maybe Fletcher and Kendricks, there are alot of questions about the quality of our draft picks. I mean without going down the whole list…just think; Smith, Milyard, Scott, Sims, Davis, Obog, Null, Murph, Onobun, Salas, Pettis… etc. Do these guys really look all that good. Heck no. And, finally, how long do you have to hang onto a project before you finally cut bait. We kept David Vobora over 3 years trying to make him into a starter when he just didn’t have the talent.

Those are my thoughts on your points above. Thank you for taking the time to thoroughly research my record and philosophy.

by RamChop on Sep 1, 2011 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't research anything....

….you just tend to leave an impression on me because of what a lightning rod you are.

On the last point, I brought up Fletch because this year Murphy in the EXACT situation Fletch was last year. So he could have also had a breakout year…not that we’ll ever know…but people, including you, weren’t even giving him a chance to be good. Everything on some of these guys, especially the late round picks is soooooo negative. Same thing with Gilyard. In these preseason games, I think he’s looked pretty damn good, in particular on ST but also in his limited action as a WR. But everyone has already cast him off, including you, as a busted 4th round pick, when he’s only entering his second year.

And I disagree with that philosophy, although I believe it comes from the fact that we don’t have a ton of depth and it’d be nice for the youngsters to really step up like JL and SAM and Saffold did. But we can’t expect that from each of our picks.

The truth is always the right answer....

by Pekka for Predator Pontiff on Sep 1, 2011 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

"Rookie performance can tell you alot"

It can, but 90% it doesn’t.

The list of guys who had pedestrian rookie years and even second years, only to go on to the Pro Bowl is 100x times longer than the list of guys who blow up their rookie year.

Relying on rookie year to tell you a player’s value is stupid

by CoachConnors on Sep 2, 2011 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Confused

For years you have bashed the FO so I am confused with this post. Guess I need to use some deductive reasoning here. Ramchop thinks the front office sucks. The front office has done just about everything ramchop hoped for and recommended except getting a true #1 WR. Therefore Ramchop thinks Ramchop sucks?

It is milk it may be spilled it may be delicious.

by shostag on Sep 1, 2011 3:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Nice try.

The FO has done much better since Mr. Kroenke became owner. Like it or not, the team has moved in the direction I’ve been advocating a long time. About 3/4 of the bad players I ragged on are gone – with more to be leaving soon. And, after doing virtually nothing in FA for two years, we made a splash by finally getting Dahl, Mikell, Cadillac, Bannan, Leber, Poppy, et.al. Aside from Kendricks, I’m still not sure we did too good in the last draft. Quinn finally did good against the Chiefs 2nd and 3rd stringers. I’m on record as opposing the Quinn pick. I would’ve preferred Luiget. And, I think the Salas and Pettis picks were just plain lousy and stupid considering the team’s need for a #1 WR. In fact, one of the main problems I’ve had with the current FO is wasted draft picks. They struck gold with JL, Sam, Saffold and maybe Kendricks. Fletcher is ok. I have virtually nothing good to say about the other 20 draftees including Smith, Milyard, Murphy and another 1/2 dozen that have already washed out. So, with the big splash this year and ditching deadbeat players and Shurmur, RamChop thinks the FO sucks less and they’re finally moving in the right direction.

by RamChop on Sep 1, 2011 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

curious

I am curious to know why you think we made a splash in FA. Cause I believe it is directly related to how the front office and coaching staff have made St. Louis a desireable team to play for.

It is milk it may be spilled it may be delicious.

by shostag on Sep 1, 2011 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

No

I think he went there because of the OC and money. And if you say it’s because they were allowed to spend money then it was never the FO’s fault it was the owners fault.

It is milk it may be spilled it may be delicious.

by shostag on Sep 1, 2011 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Chip and co. wouldn't spend the bucks.

And, except for JL, Sam, Saffold and maybe Kendricks, our FO has been far from effective and efficient in getting high-quality players in the last 3 drafts. Heck, they’ve had over 20 draft picks. How many are really any good???

by RamChop on Sep 1, 2011 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions

So

You are currently now down to if the FO would draft better you would like them?

It is milk it may be spilled it may be delicious.

Obviously it takes longer than a year or two to find out the answer to that question

and asking it now doesn’t prove you’re right about the legitimacy of the selections, but rather that you don’t understand it takes a little time for players to reach their potential.

"They saved rock forever and are the bestest band in the history of forever"

“Without AC/DC then rock music would’ve died but because of me and my mysterious influence on the record company to sign them, rock music was saved forever. By me. I’m awesome, and estatic!”

So BC means 'before Christ'

and AD means ‘after death.’ Is there rock music about this?

How does the ball-lickin thing work when you're a weird poster?

In the cool still quiet hours of night, you can hear Eagles players softly uttering love words to themselves while kissing their hands and arms. "I am the Dream team-I am the Dream team"

it was definitely a good move to bring back Clayton

it them four receivers with some history and enough versatility to throw in the running backs and Kendricks for a nice total package.

Our receivers may not be big names but we sure do have some incredible talent.

I wonder which receiver(s) are going to get the most attention from opposing defenses. Not sure if it matters with the variety of targets Sam has.

I saw Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

and I’m NOT cool with the ‘rules of the road’

by DCRamFan on Aug 31, 2011 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Surely there are rules

against posting the same things over and over and over in all caps. It was worse than those advertising bots on yahoo that type the same messages over and over. I couldn’t read anything from other posters because he was obnoxiously typing the same thing over and over. At one point he was typing “I TOLD YOU WE SHOULD SIGN CLAYTON” “I TOLD YOU SO” “I’LL SAY IT AGAIN I FUKIN TOLD YOU SO” and then immediately after that “AND AGAIN I FUKIN TOLD YOU SO” and immediately “C,MON GUYS SHOW ME THE LOVE,” isn’t that against any rules? Seemed like he was doing it to annoy everyone. (end of rant) lol :)

I have to agree

It was pretty bad.

i found out what wikipedia was

and I searched for ‘pretty bad’ and the results were ‘annoyingly awful’

This program still doesn’t know about this AC/DC group he was talking about though…..he might’ve made it up

BE NICE -

I’M JUST EXPRESSING WHAT IS A VERY GOOD DAY FOR UOR RAMS TO HAVE THE TALENTED MARK CLAYTON BACK IN THE RECEIVING CORP AS I THUNK OUR OFFENSIVE BACKS AND QUARERBACK AND WHOLE DEFENSE CORPS. WILL BENEFIT FROM HIS SIGNING ANSD IT WILL STRIKE MORE FEAR IN THE OPPONENTS DEFENSES…IS THIS THOUGHT CIVA AND KIND ENOUGH……AND O’ BY THE WAY WHAT IS THE STATUS ON THE EAGLE HH I BELIEVE WEWERE TALKING ABOUT SIGNING …ANY PROGRESS….

by jswirb on Aug 31, 2011 9:21 PM CDT reply actions

It harder to read your posts when they're in CAPS

js – it’s harder on the eye to recognize chacters when they’re in all caps like that. I know a lot people who use caps think its easier, but its not.

You’re actually making it more likely people don’t bother to try and read what you write. That’s probably not what you’re shooting for.

RUN RUN RUN

THE BALL ON A VERY SUSPECT EAGLES FRONT DEFENISVELINE

by jswirb on Aug 31, 2011 9:29 PM CDT reply actions

Reality Check...

When Clayton is ready to play the “excess” receiver corps will already be reduced by injuries so no tough decision is necessary. Can you believe that the major discussion here is having too many receivers?
BTW…cussing is unnecessary and definitely not a sign of strength, just a little false bravado.

the percentage of passing running going to be against the eagles …must be 60 rush 40 pass if we’re to win
