After going to the Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers blogs I still have a lot of concern about the Rams OLB position. Both Diles and Poppinga were looked down upon in their former organizations and seem to have similar ability to Vobora and Chamberlain.
I was originally very excited about the Diles acquisition until I did this research and now I am very concerned. I was never all that excited about Poppinga but now I'm more high on him than Diles. Diles is said to be incapable of pass defense and is best served as a back up. Popppinga was a mid round pick by the Packers some time ago and the coaches love his work ethic but he was either injured or just unproductive in games.
I think Poppinga has more upside, even though his upside is still somewhat limited in my opinion. I don't blame the FO for not pursuing better linebackers this year because they did make many solid acquisitions, but I am still very uncomfortable with the situation we are in.
Hopefully someone will put it together in the preseason and have a breakout year, and if any of our linebackers could put together a solid season our defense would be at worst solid but if they don't I fear that we will be run all over. I know Spags has confidence that he can make solid players out of previously underrated players but I still have my doubts. If anyone has any input or knows something that I don't regarding our OLBs, I would be very interested to hear it.
