St. Louis Rams practice notes: Danario Alexander not at practice today

Danario Alexander is not at practice today.

There are any number of reasons a player might miss his team's practice. Illness or family matters represent the most obvious reasons. Of course, it can also signal other things, business things, and it almost always fuels speculation. Wide receiver Danario Alexander is not at practice with the St. Louis Rams today. The reason for Alexander's absence is unknown.

An absent receiver is naturally going to fuel speculation for a team with a dozen guys competing for half that many spots. Occam's Razor for DX would naturally beg the question about his injury status, having a knee that's been operated on five times. With his injury history, he could be off having it looked at by Dr. Frankenstein. Stay tuned, and try not to let the speculation get the best of you. Alexander has been just okay in preseason play; not contributing on special teams hurts his status too.

The Rams made a move today, sending long-time long snapper Chris Massey packing. Massey has been with the team since 2002. The Rams have Jake McQuaide, a rookie from Ohio State, in camp doing some long snapping. This had to be a cap move; Massey was due $875,000 with a $500,000 roster bonus.

UPDATE: DX is not at practice because he's getting medical attention

That's just stupid to get rid of Massey.

Out of all the snaps in his career, he’s only screwed up one. One single snap since 2002. I understand that we need cap space, but there were other ways to free up space. If we lose just one game because of a crappy snap, then this is a bad move that’s backfired.

And I hope Danario is okay. It’s either an injury or a personal reason, hopefully the latter. If he stays healthy I’d say he probably has a good shot at making the team.

...but if it's injury related, he may be done.

With his history and already having fluid drained last week, if he’s injured again I’m not sure we can hang onto him anymore.

Cmon broram I usually agree with what u say, the last comments being that jackson is as good as advertised & isn’t slowin down a pinch but massey was xpendable and its been said that the rookie is showing out! He’s getting the oppurtunity that massey got when we took a chance on him! Time to move on!

I agree.

Especially one that was so good at his job.

I’ll trust that the Rams know what they’re doing and that McQuaide is just as good, but if he struggles and costs us a game or two, that would be bad.

Ugh

From what I just read on Twitter, Big Mike hurt his leg during drills

“Rams tight end Michael Hoomanawanui appeared to injure his leg in drills a little earlier. Slammed helmet to ground after att. 1 hand catch”

I hope it’s nothing serious and he continue practice or get back to it tomorrow.

It seems like he’s getting dinked a lot. He’s more injured than he has been healthy.

See what you did there? You fueled speculation and then warned against it.

The point of this post seems to be to create more WR talk. This post makes speculation unavoidable.

If anyone's interested

I just noticed that the Titans blog ‘Music City Miracles,’ has a fanpost entitled ‘St Louis Rams Wide Receivers’ where they’re discussing which wide receiver they’d like to have: DX or Gilyard…

…noting that one is most likely cut in the next couple of weeks.

by DCRamFan on Aug 22, 2011 4:04 PM CDT reply actions

What a shame...

If he could stay healthy a whole year he could contribute big time, 1,000+ yards. Sucks..

by jpcisco on Aug 22, 2011 4:10 PM CDT reply actions

DX

I would just hate to see us cut him, and then have him realize his potential down the road with another team. I feel like we found a gem in him last year, and health issues aside, he has a bright future.

Unfortunately, I have to say “health issues aside,” and in this league, health issues can break a career.

I'm only calling you bitches 'cuz I don't know your names individually.

by LOOKthatsCHAD on Aug 22, 2011 4:11 PM CDT reply actions

But sometimes, the health issues are worth it.

Ask yourself this question: Was it worth it to keep Danario Alexander on the 53-man roster last year for however many games even though he missed 3 of them due to injury? It was, because he probably won us at least 2, probably 3 games last year.

by StopSpe on Aug 22, 2011 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I can't say I disagree with you.

Just looking at that San Diego game alone, he was very valuable. I think the FO has to ask the question, who’s more valuable, 12-16 games of Mardy Gilyard, or 9-12 games of DX…keeping in mind that those game projections are totally arbitrary and something that no one can really predict.

I'm only calling you bitches 'cuz I don't know your names individually.

by LOOKthatsCHAD on Aug 22, 2011 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions

How do you +1 that?

can you be serious? That having an injured player in a preseason game has more value than a healthy (although work in progress) player who could help us in multiple aspects of the game?

by DCRamFan on Aug 22, 2011 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Two things

In a real game, DX is already done, because apparently we’d take him in the preseason, rather than have Gilyard in the regular season

Second, I think he was probably trying to force things when he didnt call for that fair catch. He obviously wants to make the team, and probably realizes how poorly he’s looked, not being a part of the team in any facet last year

by DCRamFan on Aug 22, 2011 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Well he hasnt done shit yet

And I’d much rather have DX for 3 games than mardy for 16

by richter122 on Aug 22, 2011 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree to disagree

I’m having a hard time understanding the logic behind having a player for the preseason, which doesn’t count for anything, as opposed to have a player who has potential……not to mention plays in the 16 games that do matter

by DCRamFan on Aug 22, 2011 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Well you see if and thats a HUGE IF

Mardy makes the team he wont be seeing the field as a WR, he will see it on special teams and with how dumb he is he will fumble or fail to call for fair catches and cost us games.

by richter122 on Aug 22, 2011 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions

You say 'that's a huge if'

and then you make a point using a hypothetical situation

by DCRamFan on Aug 22, 2011 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions

well if the other recievers are semi healthy when preseason is over

then Gilyard is 100% gone. So IF DX doesnt have just some soreness and something serious then Gilyard possibly makes the team and will do what he’s done in preseason which is fumble a kickoff and get his head knocked off. Not sure what angle your going at here other than backing up a brainless, WR that hasnt done anything to show he’s even worth a spot on this team.

by richter122 on Aug 22, 2011 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not making excuses for Gilyard

Hell, I know when he got drafted, and I know what (little) he’s done for our team since.

My point was that I’d rather have him on the team and healthy, than JUST have DX for the preseason. I don’t know that anyone can convince me otherwise

Frankly, though, DX won’t last in the NFL…..we use the word ‘hurt’ 50% of the time we talk about him

by DCRamFan on Aug 22, 2011 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I see where you are coming from

but the FO justs needs to face the facts that they messed up a 4th round pick and cut their losses.

wont argue that

and although he probably has little to no trade value there’s got to be SOMEONE out there that thinks he does. I’d rather get something for him, than simply let him go. Not sure who’s in the market for a 1/2 retarded punt returner though

Off topic but hilarious..

I just checked out the Raiders fan site, wow, they are incredibly excited about Terrelle Pryor. Some Raiders fans actually think he will save the franchise, lmao. How sad. Another member on their site said that they have had a great past few drafts and that this is another strong move, what are they smoking out in Oakland? Their past few drafts have been pretty crappy in my opinion. Cant believe they think they have found a savior at QB in this bum. Lmao.

2010 looks like a pretty good draft for them

McClain, houston and Ford were all solid contributors for their team as rookies last year, and should get better. Can’t tell on this years draft cause it’s too early. I would consider 09 a bad draft though, if not simply because of DHB (who didn’t laugh out loud at Al Davis when they picked him?) but because the only contributors they got out of that class as far as I can tell are Shaugnessy and Murphy, 3rd and 4th round picks.

Highly doubtful he stays

He hasnt shown anything yet. He hasnt broken a huge punt return or kick return off. He has however fumbled a kick return and gotten his head knocked off by not calling for a fair catch. He has had 1 catch against 3/4th stringers. Also he is an idiot and cant learn a playbook. No reason to hold on to him. Salas and Amendola are the same position in the slot as Mardy

Pettis plays out wide,

but is capable of learning all three spots. Slot would be his last position, but he’s capable of playing there. Just like Salas is capable of playing out wide.

Sims-Walker vs Rice career stats

MSW: 38 games played, 122 receptions, 1648 yards, 13.5 YPC, 14 TDs
SiRi: 48 games played, 146 receptions, 2129 yards, 14.6 ypc, 18 TDs

SiRi: 3.04 receptions, 44.35 yards, .38 TDs

MSW had David Garrard throwing to him. Sidney Rice had Brett Favre.

There is no reason to be an ass about this. I know it’s the internet and that makes being rude the “cool thing to do”, but we don’t need it on TST.

Second, are you really saying that 24 years old vs 26 years old when we signed him to a one year deal makes any difference whatsoever? We aren’t talking about 28 vs 30 or 30 vs 32. 24 and 26 are both very young for 1 year contracts

Third, if you want to break things down into games started vs games played, we can go way further and compare QBs, weapons to pull attention away, and % of run vs pass plays. But I was just trying to demonstrate how insanely overhyped sidney rice is, and that the difference between the two players is very minor

Rice has played the last few years with TJax. He HAS to see what the rest of the football world sees…that he is just terrible. Is there something he knows that we don’t? Is he a practice beast, then falls apart in games? Or did he just sign with Seattle for nothing but money?

remember

we didn’t want rice or edwards ….we wanted to have 3 rookies start WTF

by jswirb on Aug 22, 2011 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions

no, we wanted depth

As FA’s, we got a top guard, a starting DT, two potential starting LB’s, a good rotational DT, a good backup LB, and two good backup RB’s. Which 4-5 of those guys would you like to give up for one of the top FA WR’s?? And the available WR’s weren’t that good anyway.

You guys who moan just like to pretend there’s no cap, or that we can sign the top FA at every position of need. It doesn’t work that way in the NFL.

Massey has spoiled us for nine years.

Let’s hope McQuaide doesn’t shine a spotlight on exactly how much.

by Spielman on Aug 22, 2011 6:54 PM CDT reply actions

DX is injured?!?

I don’t get the opportunity to watch every game like some of you do, so I have to take your word that DX is even worth keeping. But in the games that I did see, I saw nothing that would make me keep him ahead of Gilyard (not that I have seen anything from either one). The question becomes potential injury vs. potential ability.

But with Massey being cut, that really hurts. In the NFL $350,000 is chump change. Why make such a vital move for that amount?

by swan218 on Aug 22, 2011 7:54 PM CDT reply actions

they saved $500k on Massey according to the P-D

and they were hard up against the cap. They have to make some tough choices here, and this one seems reasonable even if Massey was a reliable, good guy.

by apack on Aug 22, 2011 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Precaution I hope for DX to get it checked out

His play last season in the Games he got on the field put him ahead of Gilyard easily. Gilyard has done nothing in the NFL, ever. If DX can stay healthy for 3 games a year Id rather keep him than Gilyard as he is worthless.

Isn't that a pretty extreme

view of things, in light of it being 2 games into the PREseason?

No we're not.

Are you going to go around saying “I’m right, I’m right, you see I’m right now” again, only to realize that, once again, you couldn’t be more wrong?

+1

We have a real deep threat in Avery, 2 good possession recievers in Amendola and Gibson and redzone threats in MSW and Pettis and a young gun in Salas. Also if DX is healthy we got a pretty solid depth at WR. Might not be elite but it is definitely formidable.

if i

worked for the front office we would have been a serious playoff contender NEVER was there a chance in the nfl to improve a team so drastically in one year…yes we did get some nice players …to many replacements parts not enough beef…doesn’t anyone know to be a serious contender you have to be able to consistently be able to complete at least 55% of your passes and that would include at least 40% of them being a minimal of 25 yards..THEY ARE JUST THE FACTS

by jswirb on Aug 22, 2011 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

it sounds like

you’re suggesting that we should’ve gotten ONE expensive piece, which would somehow have guaranteed us a SB, as opposed to what we did do, which was spend money wisely to fill MANY holes in our offense and defense, which will reap benefits for YEARS to come

ARE SOMEWHAT RIGHT BUT WHAT YOY DON’T GET IS WE REALLY FROM WHAT I SEE DID NOT I REPEAT DID NOT BOLSTER OUR RECEIVING CORPS WHICH WAS HORRIBLE LAST YEAR

WE

WE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN 2 EXPENSIVE PIECES

by jswirb on Aug 22, 2011 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions

We didn't,q

at weaker positions too. Quintin Mikell and (somewhat) Harvey Dahl. Apparently he was only like $4 mil a year, which is a steal. But with Rice, we would not have gotten our running backs, linebackers and defensive lineman, as well as the o-line depth/versatility that we currently have. If you ran the FO, we’d be 0-16 year in and year out.

FOOTBALL

IS A GAME WHERE THERE IS NOT A SIGNIFICANCE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MEDIOCRE TEAMS AND VERY GOOD TEAMS IT IS THAT SLIM…ONE OR TWO PLAYERS BETTER COACHING-AS IN NOT SO MANY TURNOVERS—BETTER PREPAREDNESS-(REMEMBER SEATTLE) AND ANYTHING CAN TURN AROUND IN ONE YEAR…IN THE SPORTS WORLD THE TERM BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE IS BECOMING OBSOLETE AS FANS ARE NOT PATIENT AS THEY MAY HAVE BEEN IN THE PAST WITH TICKET COSTS ETC.
