Rams free agency: Where things stand today

Daniel Fells has visits scheduled with two other teams.

Well this should be a short one, right? The St. Louis Rams haven't made any roster moves since agreeing to terms with Quintin Mikell. Still, day three of free agency has brought any number of twists and turns. Let's review and see where things stand with a couple of key rumors and players.

Star-divide

Starting with the big fish...

  • Brandon Mebane - Reports that Seattle re-signed him proved premature. Nothing has been decided as of now. It is being said that the Rams are not serious bidders for Mebane, scared off by his price tag. That's probably an astute observation. It seems like it's between Seattle and Denver for Mebane.
  • Darren Sproles - Around midday it was reported that only three teams were serious bidders for Sproles: San Diego, Philadelphia and New Orleans. The thing to remember here is that things change, that may not be the case tomorrow.
  • Jason Snelling and Jerome Harrison - These two are said to be the Rams' top choices at running back, with an edge to Snelling.
  • Amobi Okoye - The Texans have let it be know that they'll trade the tenth pick of the 2008 draft, a bust who is outcast in their 3-4 system. He could be a good get at a low price for 4-3 teams.
  • Veteran defensive tackles - The Rams are looking at a few option here including Justin Bannon and Daniel Muir.
  • Scott Shanle - One of several linebackers the Rams are said to have interest in, Shanle was the talk of local radio today. At one point, it was all but done; that has since been walked back.
  • Daniel Fells - Daniel Fells has a visit scheduled tomorrow with the Denver Broncos. Tennessee and Seattle are also interested as well as the Rams. Fells is a nice player, but seems unessential in St. Louis.
  • Draft picks - Draft picks are singing deals all over the NFL. The Rams signed Greg Salas first, their fourth-round pick, and have now signed their fifth-round pick, S Jermale Hines, and two seventh-round picks, DBs Jonathan Nelson and Mikail Baker

The Haynesworth and Cofield signings have shaken loose a couple interesting names....

Marcus Stroud and Maake Kemoeatu, have now fallen from the apple tree of FAs. Not big names or ideal fits maybe but good examples of that secondary market we may be capitalizing on. It hasn’t even really opened up yet either.

Because no other teams sign their late round picks before camp.

I swear, is anybody reading this. I mean seriously… I Wish i had another face so that i could quadruple facepalm.

If you love something, set it free. If it doesn't come back, find it and kill it.

I just had nothing to say to that.

Why make drafts past the first four rounds if no one signs their late rounders? Another stupid post.

Okoye or Muir would be awesome.

Bannon would be about as disappointing as Leber. Old, slow and almost done. This is supposed to be a youthful team Devaney!!!

Just paid over $20M for a 31 year old Safety...

In addition, Hall and Robbins are age 34 or older. And, if we keep Diggs, yecch, that’ll be 4 starters on defense in their 30’s. We can’t afford to add in any more “old” guys on this defense. And somebody better recognize that the ONLY RB on this team is age 28 with very high mileage.

You know, sometimes veterans are useful on teams that are contending for the playoffs.

I like the direction the front office is going. We have to rebuild so we can be Super Bowl winners in the future, but we’re also in a position where we have a chance to get to the playoffs. Even if we aren’t quite where we need to be to make a deep run, if you get to the playoffs anything is possible. There’s no reason to throw away a playoff chance by trading old guys or stacking up on rookies. It’s good to have that nice mix. We have the core of Long, Fletcher, Quinn, Laurinaitis, etc. for the future and guys like Robbins and Mikell for now.

LOL

I’ve been on IR. Had another shoulder surgery that put me in the dirt for awhile. I’ll start doing regular post soon (After the Vicodin wears off…:-) )

Mikell took care of a huge need...

He fixed an “oops” by the FO when they let OJ go. I really think they didn’t believe he’d find a buyer and his departure left a gapping hole at S that I’ve commented on.

What the FO’s plans are/were for FA I honestly can’t tell. I do think they will add an RB before it’s all over and Sproles would fit this bill nicely. I’m still high on Slaton and haven’t seen any news that he has been acquired.

The Rams have never been a team that makes a great deal of noise about any particular player they may be interested in. Historically, they move fast on a big name player, so the longer they wait to pull the trigger on a FA, the lower profile the FA will probably be. I don’t think Okoye will be of interest in that he will be a project player even with his experience. Any addition at DT will be a turn key player. My money is on Muir.

StopSpe makes a valid point about the balance needed regarding veteran and less experienced players. It can be also pointed out that two of the best teams of the last few years have had very little big name activity in FA (Green Bay and Pitt). Yet I find myself wanting position improvement now rather than later through the draft like most fans. I am still trying to wrap my head around the new CAP rules and where the Rams really are as far as how much money is actually available to spend. How much will it cost to sign Quinn and Hendricks? I’m told Sproles may be in the 4.5 to 6 million $$ range and wants a long term deal to boot.

Raise your hand if you thought the days of frustration were over when the lockout ended? Now have someone slap you in the head. Then grab a beer before you ease into that big Lazyboy and blow out a long breath, because the season is just beginning. Cheers!!!

we are a lot better

this year compared to last already just by adding mcdaniels. you guys remember how many games we lost because we wouldnt throw the ball. and you remember the injuries to our WR core early in the season. and you remember our rookie QB’s first season? Boom. Boom. Boom. Three things that will make us improve this season. Better offense will mean better defense

......PFT's 10 takes on the Kolb trade

Ah, its fun to read when someone wants to run smack about a division rival! I’m not sure I agee with all their reasoning, but whatever. Spoiler alert: the fact that Kolb is unproven is only #2 on the list.

by CoachConnors on Jul 28, 2011 6:43 PM CDT reply actions

I gotta ask a trusted adviser here-

I’m having a LOT of fun during these trying times, but some are obliviously not. Do the teams go thru something like this every year or is this really a special occasion? Last year I was just kinda-Duh, is it over yet?

by Ram newbee on Jul 28, 2011 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Celebrate this fact

Just to try and stay with the Rams QB level…

the Cards were forced to trade away their best defensive player — and — a 2nd round pick….

Just to try and stay with us…no guarantee it worked.

Did the Rams have to trade away a young pro bowl CB and a 2nd rounder? No. The Cardinals did. You see how we win there?

by CoachConnors on Jul 28, 2011 8:03 PM CDT up reply actions

bang on

although I’d say Dockett or Wilson are their best defensive players.

Regardless, DRC leaving the division is great news. Peterson was drafted to address the ‘Bradford issue’ and having both there made me anxious. Getting rid of DRC for a bum like Kolb and also giving away a 2nd rounder just proves AZ will be bottom dwellers again.

What’s even funnier is the 61 mil they gave Kolb, effectively removing themselves from drafting any good QB that may be available in the upcoming draft.

When I heard the final damage of that deal on the Radio, I was so shocked I almost

wrecked my truck!

I am so happy DRC is out of the NFC West and the Cards blew 60 mill and a 2nd rounder to get a marginal increase at quarterback…if they dont solve their offensive line problems, that marginal will be nothing.

- And here's the Rams' 2010 season in a series. Incomplete pass, 18-yard run, incomplete pass, 7-yard run, 5-yard pass, 3-yard run, sack, incomplete pass, punt. Shoot me. - 3K

Snelling and Harrison??

not really complementary to Steven…

by phx suns on Jul 28, 2011 6:50 PM CDT reply actions

Id rather have Harrison

He can break away on a run…which is something that Steven does less and less and Snelling can’t do.

Trying to stay positive

For all we know, all those rumors may have no basis and could have been fabricated by the media which is hungry for news.

I want to be optimistic and think that perhaps thr FO has been very quiet to avoid increasing the pricing of players who may have agreed to terms with the Rams. I wouldn’t be surprised if tomorrow some of the players that verbally agreed to terms have a “change of heart”. I just cannot believe that the FO is satisfied with what we have.

I know it is a long shot but there may be plenty of activity at Rams Park tomorrow and during the weekend. Go Rams!

There is going to be activity

for every team throughout the weekend since players officially are allowed to visit teams tomorrow.

They sure sound kinda desperate

everything I hear about the Niners is sorta negative, how they are going with Alex Smith just for now, how Gore is holding out, I don’t know, I think they’re probably competing for last place in the divsion and might be trying for Nnamdi just for looks

by CoachConnors on Jul 28, 2011 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Not after the Jonathan Joseph signings.

Now it’s Tampa, New York (Jets) and San Fran.

I think you're right

but Nnamdi DID say that he hoped New York worked out. He wants to go there, its just a matter of whether or not they can figure out the $ by restructuring some existing contracts.

by adam.brown on Jul 28, 2011 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Niners now say they're out of that race, so no worries

Per Rotoworld:
The 49ers are telling people they are out of the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes, according to the NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi.

According to Lombardi, it’s down to the Jets and Cowboys. While Dallas wasn’t thought to have enough money to land Asomugha, players such as Tony Romo have already come forward to say they are willing to restructure deals.

Great free agent period

so far and the combination of a short free agency period as well as the new max cap (and minimum floor) has players going all over the place. It’s like fantasy football but with more dire consequences if you mess up…AWESOME!

by BaldBilly on Jul 28, 2011 7:48 PM CDT reply actions

If the Rams could re-sign Clayton, & get a good back up to S-Jax then i would be happy. I like the defensive core we have gotten together and with a new OC i think the O improves by leaps & bounds also. I really really want a second RB because S-Jax has put about 10,000 miles on his body since being a Ram and dude needs a tiny break i would think, if they value him.

If practice makes perfect....
Yet nobodies perfect.....
Then why practice ???
