Rams free agent rumors: Rams considering DT Justin Bannan
Add Justin Bannan to the list of defensive tackles being considered by the St. Louis Rams. According to Jim Thomas, Bannan, with the Broncos last season, is another name in the mix. It also indicates that low-end veteran help is how Devaney et al plan to address the team's need at defensive tackle.
Bannan started all 16 games in Denver last year, playing defensive end. The McDaniels-led Donkeys signed him as a free agent from Baltimore. He has experience at DE and DT and would be tackle in a 4-3 defense. At 32, Bannan is no spring chicken, but could be an upgrade over Gary Gibson.
Adequate. That sounds like the best way to describe Bannan.
Also of note, the Texans have given permission for DT Amobi Okoye to seek a trade. Okoye, a top ten pick in 2008, never really blossomed in Houston; he doesn't fit at all in their new 3-4 defense. Teams seeking a 4-3 defensive tackle who might still have some potential would be interested. He's only 24, and surely couldn't be any less of a player than the players bringing up the rear of the Rams DT rotation.

+1 Amobi is a must get with 5 yrs experoence and is only 24!!!
Talented top pick who hasn’t been a break out guy but has been solid and is for sure a better 4=3 guy….IDK if we’ll consider it but we better do something or else the middle of our D will be jelly up the middle……. minus JL

They have no need for him in Houston
So he could probably be had for little money

Amobi would probably be really good in Spags system
Cause he would be an athletic DT like Robbins who is made for this system. Plus Robbins could mentor him to help him realize whatever potential he still has

all these players being 'considered" or "persued" by the st. louis rams dont mean nothing to me...
until i see A RESULT! every speculation, rumor, or what have you, the rams havent done SH*T!! so until then, im not believing nothing right now.
been
been saying this right and people wanted me off the blog
Nope-It's not WHAT you say, it's HOW you say it.
No reason to act like someone is stupid because they disagree with you-
no
because its day 3 of FA. it is not September 11. If we haven’t filled some holes by then, then you can begin to panic and scream like a 7 yr old because they are taking all of the overpaid sexy names that the skins and seahawks are jumping on. like i said over and over again, this is just the beginning. Tomorrow will be a big day for signings. every thing up until now has been on “agreements” made by phone calls.
My prediction of Kelly Gregg might not be that off
He’s an old guy we can’t get much out of at this point, and he’s one of the guys on the scrap heap

And he played all 16 games, which is a + for Spags.
Kinda sounds like Fred Robbins from last year?

There is SO much misdirection in FA this year
I feel that most of this is mainly speculation, and lots of basic inquiries are being reported as if we would give anything for them. Hogwash. The less chance of repeating a Drew Bennett, the better.
Just
a bunch of idiots trying to be first to report on twitter, even if they’re completely wrong.

what
what a major dissapointment in the rams lack of signings this year……they have certainly disrespected and taken their fans for granted,,,no excuse at all…pathetic
Would you rather be the Redskins?
“Off-season” winners almost every single year? Forget that. Building through the draft, like the Colts and the Pats, is the correct way.
I hear ya man..
You people need to slow down.. A few key additions to the roster and more depth is what we should be going after.
Plus we technically can’t even sign players. Negotiations with players started a little over 2 days ago.
You win championships through the draft. Ask the pats, colts, saints, steelers and packers abouts

Agree
It is always the sexy choice to go after and sign big name free agents. I like the Mikell signing. He will be a monster in our defensive scheme. But, to go after and spend big money on Cofield, Mebane and Rice? I do not think Cofield and Mebane are worth the salary cap hit they will be taking up. Rice is to much of an injury risk. I think Devany realizes he can get a better ROI on a lower tier DT while spending the remaining money on other holes at LB and OG. I really don’t want to be the Redskins….

Problem is If someone compares the Rams to "elite" you don't believe it
You won’t recognize they have anything worthwhile or done anything good….whether they have or haven’t.
You won’t see how the Cardinals have screwed themselves with a huge risk on Kolb by giving up a 2nd round pick AND a young pro bowl Corner….and the Rams are a long ways from being forced into that kind of situation….are you happy about it? No. Its all bad.
And the 49ers have a crappy stop gap solution at QB to go with a disgruntled hold out at RB. The Rams didn’t let themselves get intot hat kind of situation. are you happy about it? No. Its all bad.
Is there anything good about what they’ve done? No, its all bad. The Mikell singing…bad.
The fact that they have young talent mtauring? All bad.
The Saffold pick? Bad.
The Laurinaitis pick? Bad.
Truth is you don’t want to be compared to the elite teams because when someone says they did somehting well, you’ll just say it aint true.

Damn,
the most logical post I’ve read.
The fact that they have young talent mtauring? All bad.
That’s about right. No one believes in developing talent anymore. People like this dude and RamChop are willing to throw away rookies after one year and waste money by overpaying for certain positions. Spags has already proven that his coaching staff is damn good at developing talent.

I would take a chance on Aombi Okoye but it would really depend on what the Texans would want for him.
Keeping an eye on the salary cap (see below) might inhibit that from happening though. Not only would we have to give something up in a trade for him but then we would have to contend with possibly high-end salary.
And I agree with ctwxz as far as building your team through the draft (I’m pretty sure that’s Devaney’s way of thinking too).
In light of all this Free Agency stuff along with signing our draft choices and our own RFAs and UFAs I thought I’d check out the salary caps in the NFL. This is what I came up with:
Latest salary caps by John Hollare at Scouts.com ~ Dateline: July 25, 2011
Here is the latest guesstimate as to where the 32 NFL teams are at in terms of the new and improved CBA-approved salary cap.
Tampa Bay – $59.2 million under
Seattle – $39 million under
Arizona – $37.3 million under
Chicago – $37 million under
Buffalo – $35.9 million under
Cincinnati – $35.9 million under
St. Louis – $35.6 million under
Kansas City – $34.3 million under
Jacksonville – $31.4 million under
Carolina – $30.6 million under
San Diego – $19.4 million under
San Francisco – $18.9 million under
Detroit – $16.6 million under
Atlanta – $13.9 million under
Philadelphia – $13 million under
New Orleans – $11.7 million under
Washington – $10.6 million under
Tennessee – $10.3 million under
Houston – $7.6 million under
New England – $7.6 million under
Baltimore – $5.3 million under
Denver – $1 million under
Green Bay – $62,000 under
New York Jets – $1.2 million over
Indianapolis – $2.7 million over
Minnesota – $5.1 million over
Oakland – $10 million over
Pittsburgh $10 million over
New York Giants – $11.3 million over
Dallas – $18.9 million over
I found this Info at: http://min.scout.com/2/1089035.html
At $35.6 million we don’t look to be in as bad a shape salary cap-wise as most of the teams.
Go Rams!

where did that Rams are $12million under number come from?

First off let me correct an error I made...
The name of the person posting these salary caps is John Holler, not John Hollare.
And to quote him in his post about the caps ‘… in terms of the new and improved CBA-approved salary cap…’.
Now how valid are they and how did the other report come out about the Rams only being $12 million under the cap, well maybe someone at this blog site can shead some light on that.
Go Rams!

Nick Wagnor of stlrams.com is stating the rams only have 12m of cap space availiable
He’s been pretty accurate so far
First you want to kiss me, then you want to kill me, BLOW
As crude a calculation as it is
the figures available on Rotoworld would leave you with a figure of about $12 mil in cap space too
Maybe
You may be right but it was Devaney that said that they would pickup what they are missing in free agency after everyone yelled about the draft and look at the results.
FA STARTS TOMORROW
no teams have signed anyone. no players have visited any teams. what is wrong with you people
tomorrow...
tomorrow is the first day to sign FA. And only an hour ago have teams been able to cut players, and HAVE to get under salary cap. expect teams to cut starting caliber players and put up players on the trade block for cheap in the next few days. the fans who already are throwing in the towel on the FA and the season are hilarious
true
true to a point but as i predicted we would miss out on the players so far we probably the same will go for the next few days…ay word on plaxico or bush …probably not ..how sad
why is it sad?
are you sad that we arent overpaying guys with question marks?
i'm
sad because we are not making any effort to improve our 7-9 record in a very winnable division…thats sad
I think your wrong there

How many seasons is Sam gonna last having to do it himself on offense
Carr lasted 3, and he had Andre
by King Sam Rules! on Jul 28, 2011 4:44 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Yep, he has an okay line
But he has to do all the work with this receiving core
by King Sam Rules! on Jul 28, 2011 4:47 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Carr was beaten down to the grond tho, lead the league in getting sacked. Sam doesn't have that problem (better line, better footwork)
If Bradford was getting pounded into the ground, I’d be with you….but look at the Lions and how they had a top WR and Stafford is on the IR every year….gotta just be glad the Rams have invested in the top FA Center when they did, and in top OT’s in the draft.
by CoachConnors on Jul 28, 2011 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions
That line is no help if Sam is stuck standing there waiting for recievers with no seperation ability to get open
And he will have to work harder than any other qb in the league just to pick up a 3 yard gain. So he will get hit every play, even if it’s not “a sack”
by King Sam Rules! on Jul 28, 2011 4:49 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
No seperation
Yes! This is why they needed a deep threat last year. It was obvious, wasn’t it?
His name is Avery.
by CoachConnors on Jul 28, 2011 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Now you're just reaching
Bradford ain’t Carr and the Rams aren’t those Texans. We saw him play last year and he produced better than any rookie QB, EVER. Bradford will be fine (thou might have growing pains w/new system) and McD’s offensive scheme will be an upgrade over the last one. We gonna whoop some ass this year!
All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.
-Mark Twain
Carr also
had the worst offensive line in NFL history, which is a legitimate statement considering they were a brand new franchise who had nothing to build on. Sam had good pass blocking last year and MUCH better all around talent. Our situation isn’t even close to being Houston’s.
"I kind of stepped my swagger up. You look at the Madden game and the swagger's so low, maybe they'll bump me up. Before it was a meatball flex, so you've got to liven it up a little bit." - Animal Jr.
You do realize
that the reason the Rams are not signing big stars is because 1. those big names may not want to play for us, most people who aren’t Rams fans still don’t see the Rams as a SB contender yet, until the Rams show everyone we can be a SB contender then big names will not want to sign with us or 2. We don’t want to overpay.
Stop being a Debbie Downer! It’s annoying. The Rams FO isn’t planning ways to make you mad. They have a plan, they, like everyone else is trying to get the best FA with the money we are able to spend.
we
we just lost out on bush—and kolb signed with the cards —everyone improving but us and that is a downer—-i want to win now not 2013
You shold be celebrating the fact the Cards paid a HUGE price to take a chance on Kolb, just to try and keep up with the Rams QB situation
sersly. They paid out the ass. why are you not happy about that?
by CoachConnors on Jul 28, 2011 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Where the heck is everyone getting this
“everyone is improving but us” crap? If you choose to believe that then be my guest, you’re only fooling yourself. The Niners lost three starters on defense, two of them VERY good ones, while resigning Alex Smith and not adding to their receiving corp, which in reality, is no better than ours. The Cardinals lost their young pro bowl cornerback and a second round pick for Kevin Kolb, someone hasn’t proven shit in this league. They also lost the man who single-handedly beat us in week 1 in Steve Breaston. No one has gotten better through FA. Jackson is a big downgrade from Hasselback. Yeah, Rice is an upgrade, but it didn’t make them a much better team.
"I kind of stepped my swagger up. You look at the Madden game and the swagger's so low, maybe they'll bump me up. Before it was a meatball flex, so you've got to liven it up a little bit." - Animal Jr.
This is exactly the point guys have to recognize
The Rams have not lost any stars, and upgraded their FS. (and it aint over)
Meanwhile, some other teams are getting screwed.
Some are losing guys that they can’t replace, some (Cards) are not even treading water because they’re playing catch up to where the Rams already are.
Kolb? Believe this, the Cards are just HOPING to stay even with the Rams QB situation with that move, and they paid a huge price to do it.
where are the guys that talk about hope or shit in your hand, or whatever the saying is..? Because that’s what our divison opponenet just did.

I think what the FO has done has been acceptable as far as approach is concerned (which is really the only aspect you can judge at this juncture), but I’m going to hold my tongue for the most part until a couple years down the road, because it’s frivolous to praise or demonize a move until we see how it plays out. dead
dead straight another disastorous off season
Good observation. And I can't help it that I wanted to trade up for Julio so Sam would have a legitimate #1.
But we’ve saddled him with a plethora of #2 and 3 WR’s, including many of whom will have to be cut. Made no sense to me spending 3rd and 4th picks on more potentially mediocre receivers.
McDaniels has a history of making mediocre recievers into top 5 Offenses.
So why throw away tons of money on one guy?
Same thing
Oklahoma did around Sam. He’s used to not having a #1 receiver.

i disagree
if they had gotten Sam last year that means they would have had to be worse than 1-15 the year before. and you arent gonna go from 1-15 to super bowl winners know matter who youre WRs are
It was "what if" scenario. Obviously the Jets have been 1 step removed from the SB for two years. Sam would've pushed 'em over the hump.
so would have tom brady and peyton manning
a lot of what if’s. not really relevant to our team and situation
Only one good running back
