Which offensive guard should we heavily pursue?

After watching our offensive guards play last year, I can truthfully say I am embarrassed. Depending on how much the Rams are willing to spend will determine who the best decision for us is. We have several veteran options who would surely do a much better job at opening holes for Steven Jackson than Adam Goldberg or even Jacob Bell. With that, lets begin.

Davin Joseph - He is one terrific player. If the Buccaneers make the mistake of letting him go, I think we have no choice but to pounce on him. He is great in both pass protection and run blocking. He can open holes and is versatile. Hes fairly healthy and is in the prime of his career. Legarrette Blount was running wild behind his line. Joseph is a consummate pro who never complained during their losing seasons and would truly make our offensive line elite.

Justin Blalock - Justin Blalock is an extremely healthy (only missed 2 games in 4 years) young up and coming guard. He has done a solid job on the Falcons line for the past 4 years. He is under appreciated and over looked because of the other guys on that line (Harvey Dahl, Tyson Clabo). He is a very efficient run blocker using his big 6'4 329 lbs frame. Blalock is above average in pass blocking. He would be the cheaper option between him and Joseph, though both would do wonders towards our running game. Especially the short running game such as 3rd and 1 or in the redzone.

Now we enter the very expensive options. I don't believe we will pursue either of these guys because of the money we already have invested in our line.

Carl Nicks - He is a top 5 offensive guard in the NFL. He is terrific in creating holes for the run game and keeping his QB standing in the pass game. He would be a very expensive option if the Saints where to let him go. They won't be able to afford the 2 most expensive guards in the game (Jahri Evans, Carl Nicks). I don't see us giving up a ton of money for him, though the difference between him and Adam Goldberg is unbelievable.

Logan Mankins - Mankins is considered the best guard in the NFL by many. He is terrific in every aspect of the game but is looking for a huge payday. I don't see us pursuing him at all. He also held out until week 7 last year showing what kind of character he is. Greed seems to have taken over his brain. I will admit he is on another level skill wise.

At the end of the day I'd say we end up with Blalock. He is flying under the radar and would be terrific on our line. He would improve Steven Jacksons yards per carry. I could see the Rams convert a lot of 3rd downs and 4th downs, as opposed to last year where they were absolutely horrendous on those downs.

I think any of them would be superb for our offense.

OG needs to be our top priority in FA at least on the offensive side of the ball (OLB is just as big a weakness on defense). We need to get at least one of these 4 guys as a starter, then get somebody else to compete with Bell and Greco (please, let’s not bring back Goldberg) for the other spot. Just doing that would give us a great running game to go along with the passing game that will soon be great as well.

I'd prefer

Goldberg over Greco for the backup spot by far. Goldberg has starting experience and can play four positions on the line. Bell is a lock on the left.

I'm fine with either of the first two.

Efficient and effective signings are what we need to fill as many holes as we can. Blalock, Cofield, Mikell and Leber are who I want. MIGHT even leave room for a cheap, backup running back.

Davin Joseph

would be a good fit i think.

We'd have to pay heavily, but Saffold, Bell, Brown, Mankins and Smith sounds like an O-Line to be feared.

I hope that Brown recovers from an off year and that Smith finally shows us $33M worth. If that happens and Mankins is acquired, our offense should blow people off the field in both running and passing. Especially if Kendricks works out at TE and Darren Sproles is in the backfield taking 8-10 snaps per game. With a little relief and good blocking Jackson should run wild.

Sounds great

Too good to be true, even. Adding Mankins and Sproles would be a huge lift.
Last year’s non-effort to get Sproles, in the week or so that he was available, made me think the Rams weren’t as interested in him as I wanted them to be.

A fearsome OL to go with a fearsome DL.

Games are won in the trenches, so that’d be a nice combination to go with our SAM and SJ.

The truth is always the right answer....

I don't think we get either,

let alone both. We’re all about signing those underrated guys for cheap. Cofield, Mikell and Anderson all know our coaches so I think those three are targets. That would probably leave a cheaper guard option.

How about Saffold @ LT ...

we then trade Bell to ATL for J Snelling. We move J Smith to LG ( He played the left side @ Baylor ) . J Brown @ C, move Setterstrom to RG, & finally R Foster @ RT. The above action would save us 3.5 mil in cap room and provide us with a good blocker for Bradford & a good back to speel SJax !!!

This is only an idea .

We sure need...another Dick Bass,
or someone like him.

Go RAMs !!!

Same would get murdered,

especially after Setterstrom goes down with an injury. If that ever happened….I’d jump out of my window.

It does get Goldberg and Greco out of the equation.

But I don’t think Setts or Foster are capable starters either – certainly not good ones. And as many people have pointed out, while I consider Bell to be weak at run blocking, his overall stats last year were the best for the starting five O-Linemen. We need someone good to plug in for Goldberg. Then see what happens.

Huh??

How are we gonna trade Bell to ATL for Snelling? Why would we make a trade for a player who’s a free agent? If they’re a free agent we would just sign the player, not give a player away(trade) to his old team and then still have to sign him under contract. Lots of Madden fun going on here.

by BeAsTiN on Jul 25, 2011 2:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Snelling is a FB, and they dont want FB's.....and Bell couldn't bring him if they did.

Why would they cut near-All Pro Karney if they wanted a FB? Aint happenin. The system has changed and they’re going to use H-Back/TE instead of a FB.

And I sort of doubt Bell could command a Snelling in a trade. He’s been pretty soft.
I think he’ll have a better year in a more pass-oriented system, but I know this, you don’t want him pulling and trying to road pave for RB’s as he did in the past, because he got his ass kicked doing that. Jets LB Bart Scott literally knocked him out when they met in the B gap. Knocked him out, dude. Concusion.

But as a finesse type guy, I’d expect him to be a little more effective in a pass offense.

Mankins was fun to talk about but he’s a Franchise in New England and isn’t going anywhere.

I doubt the Rams will make a move at Guard.

If this is who the FO is seriously considering and 1 for sure will be on the team then

I Don’t Give A Fack!!!! all four are legit and amazingly better than who we have so why does it matter….one is a better pass blocker and the other is a run specialist….who cares we have two studs at both RB and QB so either way we’re puttin up numbers…..just sign one and lets start running plays.
