Adam Caplan at Fox Sports has his look at the top fifteen defensive free agents and their would-be suitors. Not surprisingly, he has the St. Louis Rams linked to a couple of players that you should know and a couple of positions that will not surprise you.
First and foremost is defensive tackle, an obvious need for the Rams. The name Barry Cofield is naturally on this list, and he puts the Rams among the list of interested parties. We've heard several times throughout the offseason that the Rams have some interest in Cofield. Why wouldn't they? Cofield would make an instant impact reunited with Spagnuolo and give the Rams one of the most fearsome front four in the league.
Another defensive tackle that could be on the Rams radar is Seattle free agent Brandon Mebane. He's a year younger than Cofield, but Seattle could be motivated to retain him given their needs at the position.
Finally, there's a free safety on the list, Oakland's Michael Huff. Whether or not he remains in Oakland's plans is anyone's guess. If Huff does hit the market, he could be in high demand coming off a breakout season - his fifth in the league - in which he registered four sacks and three interceptions. Contract year wonder or the real deal? He has the athleticism (an athletic former Oakland first-round pick, really?) to be trouble for opposing receivers.
Caplan mentions the Rams in conjunction with Huff, but makes this strange comment: "The Rams have had a revolving door at free safety for the past few seasons, so they could have some interest in the athletic and improving Huff."
Maybe he meant strong safety.
Quintin Mikell was not on the list, but you have to think he'll be on the Rams' radar given the former Spagnuolo connection.
