Rams Wide Receiver's 2011: Who makes the Cut

Laurent Robinson, Brandon Gibson, Danny Amendola, Danario Alexander, Mardy Gilyard, Donny Avery, Mark Clayton, Austin Pettis...

Lots of Guys, Still No Superstars. This Post is not about Crying about the need at WR. This post is about evaluating who makes the cut next year. Here is a brief recap of each before the poll:

Laurent Robinson: A thorough Disappointment. Has not been able to put together any level of consistency on the field.

Brandon Gibson: Has shown glimpses of a Solid Receiver at times, but once again has not been able to put together any consistency on the field.

Danny Amendola: Unarguably the Rams best, and most consistent Receiving threat last year. Would be a shocker if he doesn't make the cut!

Danario Alexander: One of the most exciting prospects on our team. Unfortunately, he has two knees made of paper mache and is rarely able to stay healthy for more than one game a month.

Mardy Gilyard: A prospect with big play potential, but serious character concerns considering it took him an entire year to learn the first playbook. What is going to happen with Mardy learning the McDaniels system?

Donny Avery: The fastest player on the Rams before he was injured. If he can fully recover from his serious knee injury, he can certainly be an effective deep threat for Sam Bradford!

Mark Clayton: The most polished receiver on the Rams roster. As with Avery, if he can recover from his serious knee injury he will prove to be a dependable weapon for Bradford.

Austin Pettis: Due to his draft status, Pettis is pretty much a lock to make the final roster. Smart possession receiver who runs polished routes with excellent hands. Pettis has the skills to be the Rams best RedZone receiver next year, an area which the Rams were virtually non-existent last year.

LOL. I didn’t see this coming. I guess the Rams really want weapons for King Sam

Looks like a Josh McDaniels is drafting

must of told the FO to get him some WR that can at least catch the ball when thrown to.

by chndlr54 on Apr 30, 2011 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Gibson and Robinson are gone

Maybe even Gilyard

Get some impact players!!

by RG31 on Apr 30, 2011 12:06 PM CDT reply actions

Gilyard in Limbo!

It was kind of funny. Mort on Espn was talking about the need for Smart WR’s in McDaniels’ offense. Salas, Pettis, and Kendricks are all apparently strong academic guys. Gilyard isn’t exactly known for his smarts! He could be one of the odd men out this year if he doesn’t put his study time in!

by Jigzsaw on Apr 30, 2011 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I can see that happening

or maybe we try and trade him before we cut him?

by RamsFan1979 on Apr 30, 2011 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the Avery experiment should be about done

if he doesn’t produce this year he should be gone.

by chndlr54 on Apr 30, 2011 12:10 PM CDT reply actions

Amendola is not the best wr

it has to be clayton or avery, amendola is the best slot receiver

by Fuzzdog13 on Apr 30, 2011 1:49 PM CDT reply actions

Amendola = Production

All other receivers = injuries or ???

2010 Rams best receiver = Amendola

by Sanchez559 on Apr 30, 2011 2:13 PM CDT reply actions

BTW

that last post was a reply to fuzzdog.

by Sanchez559 on Apr 30, 2011 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

if they resign clayton then i have no idea whats going on

thats 2 WRs from the draft, plus clayton, avery, amendola, thats 5 WRs right there. if if they want 6 on the roster it will come from gilyard, alexander and gibson. i am assuming robinson gets cut because he is the worst of the bunch by far. of those i think alexander should be kept as he has easily the most upside.

Avery has been injured and his status is up in the air

Alexander is an injury waiting to happen,Clayton was injured also and his status is iffy.

This is what I don't understand!

Why do so many TSTers, when talking about our WR Corp, put Avery at the top of the list. His first yr was okay, second yr he just seemed to drop a lot of balls. I thought he was terrible. And last yr the knee and he hasn’t got his step back. The one reason everyone loves him is his speed and he hasn’t got that back. What else is there for him? I say the road.
Really shouldn’t have been a reply to you 54 but here it is anyway.

Here's what I think...

I think if Gibson trained this off season he’ll make the team, if he was lazy away he goes. Either Clayton or Avery won’t fully recover and won’t make the team. Robinson out, Alexander has to prove he can stay healthy or he goes as well; we should know by the end of training camp or not. All rookies we drafted make the team.

by RamsFan1979 on Apr 30, 2011 6:50 PM CDT reply actions

I'm wondering what's going on w/ Robinson?

Everyone loved this guy at the beginning of the 09 season. 3 games and out w/ a brutal injury. Last yr came back and didn’t do anything for us. I agree had a horrible yr. But was he playing hurt all yr and how will he play when he’s 100%? And this should effect how we look at Avery. Brutal knee injury in pre-season last yr. How will he (Avery) fair if he’s trying to play but is still not ready to go. He probably give us the same production as Robinson did last yr.
I say locks could/should be:
Clayton (if signed)
Amen
Gibson
DX
and the rest will sort themselves out.

Has anyone considered

You are all overvaluing speed just because we missed on Desean Jackson. Can anyone name me 3 guys with Titus Young’s height and speed that were all that great as deep threats. Now how many big guys with great hands, route running, and YAC can you think of. Don’t draft based on the exception instead of the rule.

I would cut

robinson and I guess gibson and keep the other 7 even though its likely we cut another one as well

Stop saying it will be Alexander

He showed way too much promise and they gave him a four year deal. My guess is that they go with 6 WR, meaning Robinson, Gibson and Gilyard are gone, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it be 7 WR and GIbson kept on. I do feel like Gilyard and Robinson might as well start looking for new teams now

by Rick Siegel on May 1, 2011 12:05 AM CDT reply actions

Alexander is of no value on the Sideline!

He played 5 games last year and was injured the rest. His knees are held together by thread at this point. At what point do we face facts?

by Jigzsaw on May 1, 2011 12:17 AM CDT up reply actions

You don't do it after less than a season

Especially since his (latest) knee surgery was well known to take into the season to heal. The Rams actually suggested to him to take the whole year off from football to heal. Now he’ll have had the whole offseason with no complications last year. His old injuries should be healed

The question will be…can he avoid new injuries? And are his knees strong enough after 5 surgeries to hold up to the week to week pounding of an nfl season?

Either way, he is the ONLY WR we have that has ever shown #1 WR potential. They won’t give up on him this quickly.

by Rick Siegel on May 1, 2011 1:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Robinson is a goner for me

I used to really like him, but he was a liability last year. Being the 2nd worst WR in the league (thanks advanced stats) is not a good accolade to hold.

Gilyard is still PS eligible.

I want Gibson to stay, he has worked hard and shown that he can get better, improving every single game (but the Seattle game, but then everyone, including Sam, laid a turd in that one)

Onobun is still PS eligible.

Clayton needs to stay, if only to be the vet presence.

Avery needs to stay, that speed is rare, and he worked incredibly hard last off-season to build mass to survive the season – freak injury, could happen to anyone.

Alexander has elite potential when healthy. You can’t cut that. Is he still PS eligible though? Doubt he’d last long on there though.

Amendola needs to be a lock, but the drafting of Salas brings that into question. I know who’d I rather have… DANNYYYYYYY!

So for me, next year our active roster WRs should be:
Clayton
Avery
Amendola
DX
Pettis
Gibson

PS:
Salas
Gilyard
Onobun

Cut:
Robinson
Fells

Bradford to Onobun!

by Infemous on May 1, 2011 3:59 AM CDT reply actions

They didnt draft Salas to put him on the PS:

Active roster WRs

Clayton
Avery
Amendola
DX
Pettis
Salas

by Thomas W on May 1, 2011 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Gibson might beat out Avery

Nothing Avery has done says he will break out this year. And I heard again and again last year that Gibson was the best route runner.

by King Sam Rules! on May 1, 2011 11:59 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Well then Amendola is gone

Avery has better stats in his 2 years of play than does Amendola. More TD’s, more yards, and Avery has better speed. Also, Avery had a beat up Bulger, Null, and Boller throwing him the ball for BOTH seasons.

by richter122 on May 1, 2011 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Avery is out

He just doesn’t separate (I don’t care how fast he is) and he is not worth his contract.

by King Sam Rules! on May 1, 2011 1:00 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I agree

If Avery can not come back from his injury just as fast as he once was, he really brings NOTHING to the table…

by Jigzsaw on May 1, 2011 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea i gurantee Avery is on the team next year

all this is coming from a guy pissed we didnt draft Herzlich who nobody drafted. Makes no sense why you keep clamoring about that when NOBODY else drafted him.

by richter122 on May 1, 2011 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Well being as Amendola can do kick returns brings him back

and I would like to see Avery go over the middle like Amendola. The hell with Avery and his medicre ability. Amendola had a rookie QB coming from a spread offense.More excuses for a WR who is better suited to play for Al Davis.

by chndlr54 on May 1, 2011 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

we just got a 7th rounder for kick returns

and with the new rule kick returns might not mean anything anymore as each kicker can kick it out of the endzone

by richter122 on May 1, 2011 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Question...

Is there a limit to how many WRs we can have on the active roster?

It’ll be interesting to see who goes. The one thing I’m sure of, is that Robinson is outttt. I’d also like for Fells to exit the building, but it’s a little confusing as the Rams showed interest in keeping him before the lockout happened. IF the Rams keep him, I think Onobun and Bajema are on the hot seat. If I’m counting correctly, we have 5 TEs right now, including Kendricks.

9 WRs + 5 TEs = 14 roster spots. I don’t know if that’s the usual, but it seems mighty high to me.

I bet Sarah Palin can learn a playbook faster than Mardy Gilyard.

Leonard Hankerson to the Rams in the 2nd round!!!

by Rams07 on May 1, 2011 1:09 PM CDT reply actions

BTW

I love how the vast majority is Robinson.

I bet Sarah Palin can learn a playbook faster than Mardy Gilyard.

I'd hate to be an underperforming Rams WR this offseason -____-

by Rams07 on May 1, 2011 1:14 PM CDT reply actions

see ya Gibson and Robinson

Clayton
Amendola
Avery
DX
Pettis
Salas
Gilyard

Someone has to step up this year. What happens now if we still need a true #1 for next years draft? Gilyard, Avery and DX are on the bubble this season to be cut IMO.
