+70 Rule
[Note by VanRam, 04/23/11 8:26 PM EDT ] Promoted for your reading pleasure...
Gil Brandt, the godfather of modern day scouting and drafting once said that he would add the raw totals of a players bench press, broad jump and vertical jump to measure their explosiveness. He went on to say that any number over 70 (example: 30 reps on the bench, vertical of 30 and 10 foot broad jump) indicates a player is explosive and this is important in the battle in the trenches or moving people back. Football is a game of 11 one-on-one battles and if can have just a momentary edge due to that explosiveness that could be a difference maker. With that said here are this years members of the +70 club and their projected rounds they will be picked.
1st Round- DLineman: Ryan Kerrigan, JJ Watt (actually had the highest score), Justin Houston. DB: Jimmy Smith
1st-2nd Round- DLineman: Marvin Austin
2nd Round- DL Allen Bailey, G Marcus Cannon, WR: Torrey Smith and Jonathan Baldwin.
2nd-3rd Round- DL Chris Carter
2nd-4th Round- DL Drake Nevis, WR Greg Little
3rd-4th Round- DB Marcus Gilchrist, TE: Jordan Cameron and Virgil Green, RB: Shane Vereen, Jordan Todman and Delon Carter
4th-6th Round- RB Jamie Harper, OLineman: Kristopher O'Dowd and Chris Hairston, OLB/DE: Bruce Miller and Cheto Ozougwu, LB Russ Homan, DB Da'Norris Searcy
5th-7th Round-FB Anthony Sherman, LB Mark Herzlick
6th Round-Undrafted Free Agent- DL D'Aundre Reed, DB David Sims
Traditionally these type of players make rosters. The guys selected in the top rounds can be stars but the takeaway (at least for me) is that you can get really good value from the 4th round on.

Can it be possible to go back in time?
For example to the 2005 draft and see how the +70 formula has worked with draftees, after the fact?
2005 draft...
there were 25-30 players that graded out +70. Of those players the following guys are still in the league: DeMarcus Ware OLB/DE 1st Round, Khalif Barnes OL 1st Round, Luis Castillo DL 1st Round, Sione Pouha DL 3rd Round, Eric Ghiachic OL 4th Round, Marion Barber RB 4th Round, Tyjuan Hagler LB 5th Round, Jovan Haye DL 6th Round, Madison Hedgecock FB 7th Round and Tim Bulman DL Undrafted.
This is interesting
I would have assumed that the list would be longer and have included some higher profile players.

I was going to post this but saw you got to it first. maybe I can do some analysis.
Sam the MAN! GIANTS WIN THE WORLD SERIES!!!!!!!
I had some analysis but can't find it so I thought I'd at least post this but...
what was interesting is that virtually all the players that grade-out over 70 will make a roster in their first year (almost 96%) even if they aren’t drafted. About 46% of these players can be found from the 4th round on and about 75% of these players are OL, DL and LB.
so leguit isnt even supposed to be drafted?...
Cuz I don’t see how. More I see of him the more I like. I live in chi n got the illini games every week and he was one of the reasons they were decent… plus I wouldn’t bitch about him being our #1 pick

Stephen Paea
How’d Stephen Paea not make this list?
Didn’t he have like 50 bench presses?
Must not have run the other drills.
I’d put him in there though because unless his vertical is 8 inches he’d probably make the cut.

He didn't do the other drills
since he was still recovering from his knee injury. I guess “incomplete” doesn’t count.
Number's from Paea's Pro Day
5.15 40 yrds
31" vertical
8’ broad jump
all while coming in at 299.4lbs.
31+8+49=88
Yeah, he needs to be added to the 70+ list.

His physical measurements are bad
but every time I see Drake Nevis on youtube highlight reels, I somehow feel like he is going to be the best DT in this year’s class. Very explosive.
With the need for OLB
I wouldn’t mind the Rams taking a shot on Herzlik in the sixth or seventh round.
I like the guy too
but he’s another Vabora, which IMO means good ST’s play and mainly a back-up that needs to add bulk & strength for the NFL. Neither should be starters in the NFL, but very reliable backup/rotational guys.

In addition to Herzlik, I really like Russ Homan from Ohio State...
RamsFan1979, good get with Paea’s pro day. That puts his number higher than Watt’s total.
CBS Draft #s
Homan was number 12, while Herzlich is # 16. Both in the top 20!
McD is going to turn SJ39 into the ultimate TD machine!!!
Go RAMs !!!
Jonathan Baldwin
I like this guy despite the concerns.
