St. Louis Rams Top 10 Draft Successes: #9 - Kevin Carter

The St. Louis Rams have had their fair share of excellent draft picks since resettling under the Arch in 1995. Of course, they had more than their fair share of busts too, but we've covered that already.

On our arbitrary list of the ten best picks of the St. Louis Rams, the ninth spot goes to the first first-round pick the team made in its new home city.  Sorry, Los Angelenos. DE Kevin Carter was picked with the sixth overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft. He played for six seasons with the Rams, starting all 16 games from 1995-1999; he started 13 in 2000, his final year with the team.

During the Rams magical 1999 championship season, Carter collected a league-best 17 sacks. He also forced 4 fumbles and recovered 2 that season. He was a First-Team Pro Bowler that year.

With the Rams, Carter totaled 62.5 sacks, 14 FF and 214 tackles. Though he played for eight more seasons, he was never quite as productive in stints with the Titans, Dolphins and Buccaneers

Ok so I’m just wonderin.. after a marvelous 17 sack season, why wasn’t he resigned? Was it an injury thing or a coaching change thing?

by Ramfest on Apr 20, 2011 3:51 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

He got in

Vermeil’s dog house for taking plays off in the SB

I'll never ger over

him taking himself out of the game in the Super Bowl with 30 seconds left and Tennessee driving. He’s supposed to be the big star that defines the defense and he takes himself out of the game.

It wasn’t Vermeil that blackballed him. Vermeil retired right after the Super Bowl. I think everyone was just tired of his “me first” attitude. Note that he did play one more season for the Rams before leaving, but his best days were over.

Why did Vermeil retire, then unretire and coach like 4 more years?

I never got that, someone elaborate, please

I don't think anyone knows for sure.

My guess is that his wife wanted him to retire and she hit him with it when he was feeling even more emotional than usual after winning the Super Bowl. At that point he wasn’t thinking real clearly and he said okay. Later he started thinking rationally again and realized he didn’t want to quit yet. By that time it was too late to come back to the Rams, so he went to K.C. to be with his buddy (Peterson?), the GM.
