The St. Louis Rams were well represented at two college pro day events today. Devaney had a contingency at both the Illinois and Maryland pro day events. Between the two events, several potential first and second round picks performed between the two events and a host of other players who could be picked later in the draft.
Obviously, WR Torrey Smith was the big show in Maryland. A mock draft today had the Rams picking Smith in the second round. It's a reasonable prediction. Smith could be drafted as high as late in the first round too, making him an option in any trade-down scenario. Will at Draft Breakdown notes that Smith ran with quick feet, stopped and turned well, but did round off his cuts on routes, something he's gotten marked down for by draft watchers. RB Da'rel Scott wowed everyone with his sub-4.4 forty at the Combine. Today, he dropped jaws with a one-handed over-the-shoulder catch.
DT Corey Liuget is obviously the most recognizable name for Rams fans at the Illinois pro day. Kiper gave Liuget to the Rams in his latest mock draft, and the Rams could certainly use a three technique defensive tackle. It's interesting that Rams DL coach Brendan Daley was on hand at the event with Mike Williams, VP of player personnel. RB Mikel LeShoure and LB Martez Wilson are the other two high profile picks from Illinois, both are likely first or second round picks.
The Rams will not be interested in QB Christian Ponder this year, but there was a very special Rams connection at Ponder's pro day. Isaac Bruce caught passes from Ponder at his pro day, yes, that Isaac Bruce. Ponder missed a couple throws and attributed it to timing issues with Bruuuuce. Um, dude, it wasn't Bruce's fault, trust us.
