Is OJ Atogwe worth 8mil?

A common comment among Ram fans is that OJ Atogwe is not worth 8mil.

In real terms, who is? It's hard to justify that sort of dollar sitting in someone's pocket and they haven't saved a life. However, in football terms, there are a tonne of players getting mad currency who don't deserve it. Players like Vernon Gholston stand to earn that sort of money without doing a single thing (quite literally) in their NFL Careers.

In Football, money is treated entirely differently from the real world and 8 mil is paid to players that can be considered elite or premier players at their position. Is OJ one of these players?

After the Jump I will list off Atogwe's 2010 stats (as they are all we have to go on) and we will see if he warrants the money he was stood to earn.

Atogwe's 2010 Stats:

16 Games Played

73 Total tackles (64 solo 9 assist)

9 Pass Deflections

3 INT's (53 yards)

2 Sacks

2 Forced Fumbles.

Nick Collins' 2010 Stats:

16 Games Played

70 Tackles (59 solo 11 assist)

12 Pass Deflections

4 INT's (34 yards)

Antrel Rolle 2010 Stats:

16 Games Played

87 Tackles (75 solo 12 assist)

4 Pass Deflections

1 INT (36 yards)

0.5 Sacks

1 Forced Fumble

4 Fumble Recoveries

Kerry Rhodes 2010 Stats:

16 Games Played

90 Tackles (78 solo 12 assist)

12 Pass Deflections

4 INT's (174 yards)

1 Sack

Now these are some of the best FS in the NFC and Atogwe's stats more than compare.

Looking at statistics it can be said that he out performed Nick Collins, who went to the Pro Bowl ahead of him. He also out performed Antrel Rolle who also went to the Pro Bowl ahead of him.

Kerry Rhodes came closest to Atogwe's numbers, but did not cause or recover any fumbles, and he got half the sacks that Atogwe did.

The amount of tackles may regard the strength of the D Line or the way in which the safety was used. Either way, Atogwe's tackle totals are low in comparison, but stand very well.

Now let's look at their contracts:

(courtesy of: http://www.rotoworld.com )

Nick Collins:

Signed four-year, $26.75 million contract. The deal includes $14 million guaranteed. 2011: $2.9 million, 2012: $3.45 million, 2013: $4.35 million, 2014: Free Agent

Antrel Rolle:

Signed a five-year, $37 million contract. The deal contains $15 million guaranteed, including a $5 million signing bonus and Rolle's first two years' base salaries. Rolle also is eligible for annual $250,000 workout bonuses. Another $100,000 is available yearly in Pro Bowl incentives. 2011: $5.25 million, 2012: $6.75 million, 2013-2014: $7 million, 2015: Free Agent

Kerry Rhodes:

Signed a five-year, $33.5 million contract. The deal contains $20.002 million guaranteed, including a $2 million roster bonus in the third season. Annual $500,000 workout bonuses are available throughout the contract's life. 2011: $2.425 million, 2012: $3.5 million (+ $1 million reporting bonus), 2013: $4.5 million (Voidable Year), 2014: Free Agent

Based on this evidence, do you still feel that Atogwe is not an elite FS in the NFL?

Remember, this isn't even taking into account his role off the field as a leader and experienced player.

Should Atogwe sign elsewhere, where could we find a replacement to match that production?

Anyone in the draft? Free Agency?
