2011-12 Bowls: Holiday Bowl open thread (Cal vs. Texas)
Well, we've got the offensive explosion by two mediocre teams going down right now, which means we're due for some sloppy play by decent teams with strong prospects tonight. Gotta take the good with the bad.
Tonight's Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl features as ethically unsound of a sponsor you'll find coupled with some of the best scouting to this point.
After the break, a couple references and some notes on the prospects in action tonight.
Check out these references from around SB Nation for the game:
- Tevin's prospect to watch (Texas OLB Keenan Robinson) as well as his matchup focus (Cal WR Keenan Allen vs. the UT secondary)
- the EDSBS 35 for 35 show (with Holly Anderson)
- Bill C's stat-heavy preview and prediction
- Burnt Orange Nation, the SBN community for fans of Texas
- California Golden Blogs, the SBN community for Cal fans
So Tevin covered the aforementioned Keenans, and the MTD watch notes cover the rest of the big names: (from UT) DE Alex Okafor, OLB Emmanuel Acho, DT Kheeston Randall, SS Kenny Vaccaro, (from Cal) DE Trevor Guyton, ILB Mychal Kendricks, SS Sean Cattouse and WR Marvin Jones.
For Rams fans, I would add that the interior line for the Longhorns as well as the Bears' tackles need to be scouted as well. There are a handful of day 3 options that could well be in play when the Rams are on the clock in the 4th round or later.

oh nm keeston randall
What tier do you have Randall at? He’s got good measurables. This is the first time I’ve watched Texas.

I've got him 2-5 on the watchlist
but he hasn’t capitalized on his natural ability yet. He’s actually fallen off his game last year instead of plateauing or taking a step forward. Maybe a Patriots or Green Bay or Pittsburgh takes him early on day 2 on potential and can afford to. But I put him late 3rd to early 5th in all likelihood.

it's just an excel spreadsheet
even if you save it, you should just be able to open it in excel

yeah, I'd say
just save it to the desktop and open it from there. As long as you have MS Excel (and if you don’t, WTF are you doing…), you should be good.

really like Marvin Jones
Hope he has a good game. I’d give him a 4th round grade.

solid skills
but measurables just aren’t that strong on tape. Not fast enough to burn, not strong enough to overpower…how does he create room in the NFL?

And to the guy who emailed me
about not having Cal CB Marc Anthony on the watchlist, that’s why he’s not on it. Pathetic weight and hands at the line.

I've heard Jeffcoat's name called a lot tonight.
I’m driving so I’m at a visual disadvantage. What’s his story, 3k?

top HS recruit
still a bit raw with his hands, but OBVIOUS natural ability. Expect big things from him in 2012. Candidate for a huge rise and a top selection as a junior if things go well

Solid games
for Cal’s big two, WR Keenan Allen (9 rec, 82 yds) & Marvin Jones (8 rec, 93 yds). Cal needs someone to carry the Marshawn Lynch/Jahvid Best torch at RB. It ain’t Isi Sofele.
For UT, it’s an odd win considering what it sets up for 2012. Is UT going to try to match OU as a defensive stalwart? That’s never been their game under Mack Brown, so I’d be shocked if he puts more chips on that side. But despite the Gilbert/McCoy/Ash QB shenanigans, a solid 1-2 (-3-4…) punch at RB and talent at WR, the Horns never put together a coherent offense. Given that they’ll all be back next year (save for Fozzy Whitaker), this should be figured out by week 1…I say should. Because the QB situation certainly wasn’t figured out this year, and the Ash/McCoy battle will wage in the offseason (this win, obviously, helping Ash’s case) as will the RB platoon. Should be a hell of an offseason in Austin…

They got a hell of class coming in I know
Till recently they were #1. Bama just took over but I see LSU still working on that safety. They could trump all if they get him.
Anyhoo I see 2 DTs, 2 DEs and 2 OLBs all 4 stars except for 5 star MB2. (Malcolm Brown) I wonder if he’s related to Malcolm Brown, like maybe his brother.

Cal’s QB is a freaking flop, that dude should not be the QB of any division 1 school with his happy feet and rag arm. Wasted effort by Cal’s defense.
If practice makes perfect....
Yet nobodies perfect.....
Then why practice ???
Maynard is the only one who throws more INT's than me
