2012 NFL Mock Draft: Todd McShay Mock Draft

Todd McShay, ESPN's NFL draft guru without the hair piece, phoned in his first 2012 NFL Mock Draft today. It's available on ESPN In$ider. McShay's mock doesn't drift too far outside of the box of conventional wisdom. In fact, his pick for the St. Louis Rams is one you see again and again, and will continue to see until the 2012 NFL Draft actually happens.

McShay gives the Rams Matt Kalil, offensive tackle, USC

Here's his take on the pick:

The Rams need to better protect the investment they made in 2010 No. 1 overall pick QB Sam Bradford, and current LOT Jason Smith has not lived up to expectations as the No. 2 overall pick in 2009. Given Kalil's size and athleticism, he is ready to step in right now and take over at left tackle.

The draft order McShay uses is based on the current draft order, which would put the Rams in second, though I think they're actually in third. He has the Vikings picking LSU corner Morris Claiborne with the third pick. If it were reversed, I wonder if the picks would be the same since Minnesota could use a tackle like Kalil too.

He leaves Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III out his top five, replacing him with North Carolina DE Quintin Coples, who many don't buy as a top five pick.

I've said this before, but there is no way that the Rams can screw this up.

Hang a picture of Kalil next to a picture of Blackmon and throw a dart, or, if someone comes a calling, let’s make a deal!

Rams big board (imo)

1.matt kalil
2. morris claiborne
3. Riley reiff
4.justin blackmon
5. Jonathan martin

by Ram_Redemption on Dec 21, 2011 9:15 PM CST via mobile reply actions

MIN should pick Kallil since they have the need and will own #2

We would have no choice but to trade our pick to whoever wants the QB of their choice. I fully believe WAS will take a QB w/their pick which puts us in a potentially good position. IMO nobody we really need fits in the 3 spot, they’re all reaches. Claiborne is nice and all, but he’s no P.Peterson and he went what, like top 10 last year? Blackmon is OK, but I don’t know if #3 overall good.

by RamsFan1979 on Dec 21, 2011 9:23 PM CST reply actions

I think those people are living in the now

Patrick Peterson was a much better prospect in terms of ability, and there haven’t been many high quality matchups against Claiborne (especially with Tyrann Mathieu) on the other side.

He is probably more polished as a cornerback than Peterson was at this point in his career.

Patrick Peterson is just the biggest freak of nature you’ll see at that position. I’ve seen Peterson get beat way more in college than I have Claiborne.

agreed on Claiborne

but I’m surprised Blackmon is losing so much stock. He’s a very physical and intelligent WR though his body may be limiting. I see more Dez Bryant/Dwayne Bowe in him than Michael Crabtree, as far as comparisons go.

However, a trade down to pick up Alshon Jeffrey would be godly, and Michael Floyd would be nice also.

he's got so much quality film though

I’d guess he surprises on the bench, hand size, height and vertical measurements (positively), and is predictable in the 40 (something like 4.48). I’m on the “Blackmon over Kalil” bus though, so take what I say with a grain of salt, lol

Blackmon or bust!!!!!!!11

We need a wr more than we need those uniforms! Lloyd is not signed long term and outside of him and Amendola, we have no one who can consistently catch the football. You dont have to have the greatest line in the world to win ( see pitt, green bay) but you need receivers who can catch ( even the broncos!) We need play makers and blackmon fits that bill to a T. How many ( cant miss) line men have we went with in the first round? And how many receivers? which position has worked out best for us? We need play makers and hands on this team. A west coast offense with short routes, and quick rythm can mask a weaker line. but no hands from the WR position has murdered us. How many dropped balls can we take!?!

by hiztory on Dec 21, 2011 9:28 PM CST reply actions

Dude we lead the league in SACKS..not drops.sacks kill

Besides kalil claiborne reiff and martin are ALL ranked as better than blackmon

by Ram_Redemption on Dec 21, 2011 9:34 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

No Cb in this draft is worth that high of a pick

If Kalil isn’t there then the man is Blackmon, I think he’s an overall better wr than Julio was IMO, He has better hands and can do everything just as well even though he is shorter, I think green and Blackmon are about neck and neck though. If they don’t feel good about blackmon trade back, no other player is worth it.

by RG31 on Dec 21, 2011 9:40 PM CST via mobile reply actions

If Kalil isn't there then I say trade down to 12th or something then

get that teams 1st 2nd and 4th (might have to give them a lower round pick or some shit) then pick up one of those corners or some other OT that may be worth that position. I don’t follow college and its players that much.

Man,

I’ve been hit with a giant, massive pile of cow shit and it’s only made me stronger to have gotten through it. Not only has it not gotten better, but the same shit keeps getting thrown at me, only now I’m more prepared and much stronger to face it. I’ve actually gotten to the point of depression before, even if I was in denial at the time (a sign of depression, of course), which, to anyone who knew me in high school, is extremely uncharacteristic of me. I now have all my ducks in a row and have a goal in sight that I’m taking one step at a time to get to, and life sure as hell isn’t making it easy either. Doesn’t mean I we can’t be happy at times through all of the bullshit I face. Hell, if that feeling I had when Barkley shredded Oregon wasn’t happiness, then I don’t know what is. You don’t roll over and cry when things get tough, you man up and beat it. I would know, and what I’ve faced isn’t even comparable to what more than half the world faces on a daily basis.

Bynum is easily capable of being the second best big in the league.

He can be just as dominant as Dwight on defense (which was obvious in their 16-1 run last year). His problem is just health and maturity, with both leading to inconsistencies.

No he doesn’t. Andrew Bynum has a much better post game. As does Pau Gasol.

Blake is fast but a disciplined defender would kill him. He has to develop that 15 footer or he won’t last.

I qualify a post game as the ability to back someone down. Dwight does that. Gasoft just plays great till he starts crying. Bynum goes and backs into someone, backs in, then breaks a knee.

Note to Douglas M: Remember that 99% of what I say involves BS

by King Sam Rules! on Dec 22, 2011 12:03 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Seriously? Do you know what a post game is?

It’s about moves and counter-moves. He has one move, no hook shot to speak of, and no fadeaway.

He’s quick and athletic, but he doesn’t have a post game yet.

And by “won’t last,” I meant he won’t last as long as a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Karl Malone did, which would be a shame because Blake has that kind of potential.

As for Pau/Bynum, they have the hooks/countermoves that are essential to a good post game, injuries/softness aside.

Potential? Yes

Cause he’s younger and healthier. Heres where I think it stands. Rose isn’t the defender Paul is, but could be if he committed to it. Rose isn’t the passer Paul is, and won’t be. He simply looks to score to much to be that. He isn’t the floor general Paul is, and won’t be. His looking to score interferes with looking for the best shot. Who would I rather have? Rose. Whose a better PG (by definition of a pg)? Paul

That trick doesn’t work when your athleticism wanes. If he doesn’t develop they other moves, he won’t last as long/be as good as he could.

I think players

like Kareem and Olajuwon who dominated the ‘80s and ’90s are the most impressive. I agree, I really can’t put much value into the ‘60s, even if it’s unfair. I would never discount Russell though, but there really wasn’t much competition outside of the Lakers and they were far superior to them too.

What a Damn Shame

That after taking a LT #2 overall and then later using a 2nd round pick on a OT, that we’re still in the mix for an OT next year. What a bunch of wasted money and draft choice….Billy D has to go, like as soon as possible. Take Kalil, who is supposed to be another Jake Long and move on, there shouldn’t even be a question about it.its not the sexy pick but Billy D has brought us to this

You’re kidding that thebRams will spend another 1st round pick on an OT, right? Right now you build the OL and DL via free agency, the draft gets you playmakers, e.g., Blackmon or Jeffrey as receivers, an OLB, a CB, a RB, and some depth.

Of course, the people picking the free agents and the drafted rookies ARE NOT Devaney and Spagnuolo; their time is done here. Is there another Harbaugh available? Is Mrs. Harbaugh busy for the next 3-5 years?
