Chris Long Comes Up Short
While watching the Rams game Sunday I focused on Chris Long for a number of plays. It seemed that Arizona used a number of running plays in Long's direction. If Chris went wide to the quarterback, they ran inside him. If he went inside, they went outside. I am sure he was not the only one coming up short, but I went on Pro Football Focus this morning to see where he ranks among defensive ends. PFF ranks every player on every play. The good news: Chris Long is the number one rated DE on pass rushing. The bad news: Chris is rated dead last among DE's on running plays.

I knew he was bad against the run
Didn’t know he was that good against the pass
Note to Douglas M: Remember that 99% of what I say involves BS

Where you find these rankings at?
Yeah King Chris should get better at that with more DTs. I also noticed that he gets shook a lot.
Is that great man formally known as Tevin T. Broner, also I'm on twitter T_bron
Thats how it generally works.
A great pass rusher is almost always lacking against the run. Look at Suh- He is not dominant in the run game at all.Or Dwight Freeney…. This doesn’t surprise me
SJax is still a beast! Best RB in the league!

He isn’t great but he is at least average in this regard. PFF doesn’t account for quite a few things when factoring in their “rankings”.
Quinn is worse against the run than Long, but if Long is last than PFF says that Quinn is better than Long. That’s BS. Watching the games Quinn gets knocked out of run plays regularly and generally gets his tackles when in pursuit, something he is decent at because of his speed.
I saw against the cardinals a defensive line who got blown off the ball regularly and Gibson being in instead of Bannan showed. We had our linebackers out of position a lot to the point where we’d have our guys shifted one way and arizona would run the complete opposite way and have a pulling guard, a fullback, and Beanie Wells with a head of steam against one linebacker, a corner, and a safety with everyone else out of the play.
Thats why Wells beat our asses. He’s a good back but our defensive line got dominated a lot in the run.
The most important task of a Defensive End is to get to the QB.
Long does that as well as almost anyone in the NFL.
I would think there is an opportunity here for the Rams coaches to work with him on this or to try and alter their defence a bit to account for this weakness. I don’t see a lot of the Rams, but I doubt Long’s failures on run defence are due to a lack of effort or physical ability.
My 2011 Lions season prediction: 12 wins and 4 losses. I made this prediction the week after the New England preseason game. It's looking slightly optimistic right now.
