So the Rams steadily improving defense got trucked over by another bruiser running back. The Rams defense has a hell of a time with the zone blocking running game. I personally dont understand what the hell the difference is, but the Cardinals, Redskins and Cowboys all run it and against the Rams it looks like a game of pinball.
But this last game even yielding 208 yards on the ground, the Rams only surrendered 16 points! With all that has happened injurywise and all the undrafted/rookies they are starting...this defense is amazing. Last game they turned the ball over and gave the offense 4 more possessions to win the football game.
Now special teams started out hot but had a mini collapse there toward the end of the game, but overall I think special teams have been average to good. You gotta hand it to Patrick Peterson, that guy is smart, big and moves like greased lightning! What a pickup by the Cards there.
The Offense is the problem with this team. I know master of the obvious right? I was caught up in the hype like everyone else when the Rams took on Josh McDaniels and didnt see what now in hindsight was plainly obvious looming failure.
1. 2nd year quarterback
2. Brand new complicated offense
3. Lockout
4. Average to poor offensive line.
Last year we were all pissed at Shurmur for dink and dunk. Now we know why. As special as Sam looked last year, he came crashing down to earth when the short passing game was taken away. This exposed an offensive line that could never keep a defense out on the 3rd and 9 blitz.
I think this new offense reveals the fact that our quarterback is only in his second year. Sam may have all the tools, but defenses are pulling out all the stops vs the Rams and you can tell he is getting confused out there.
Even when the Rams block well enough and Sam releases the football, often times the pass is dropped or the reciever stops on his route when Sam thinks he is supposed to run on through. This is because the offense was not practiced enough in the offseason. Combine this with the fact that our quarterback is only in his second year and the whole offense does not have alot of veteran players beyond SJ39.
I do blame the coaching staff for some of it. In hindsight, with the lockout, they just bit off way way way more than they could possibly chew. What they should have done was told McDaniels..."Look your offense is to complicated and we have no time to install it." "We are going to run the WC offense that we did last year and next year we will switch to the new offense."
You know the coaching staff considered implementing McDaniels offense to be a problem because they stated in the offseason that the rams were going to run 60% new offense and 40% old due to the short offseason.
I think ultimately the major coaches should stay for one more year. I think the line coach if they have one should be fired! The Rams should hire a better oline coach.
My reasoning is the defense is there big time! Special teams is there but could use some improvement! The offense is making both of these solid performing parts of the team irrelevant! I think giving JMCD one more year with a full offseason could make the offense much much better.
If you fire everyone, you will definitely lose a really falking awesome defense for sure. Not to mention the injury situation will most likely be better and the Rams can come back with a full offseason, amendola clayton, resign lloyd and have DX in there. Not to mention look how far Salas and Pettis have come!
