Bradford, I am calling you out.

Ok, I am not going to post another gem about our inept front office and coaching staff, because I feel that I may be beating a dead horse.  At this point we know that most of the things I have written and commented on have come to fruition and that it is time to touch on a possible solution.

Hey Sammmy!  It might be time to claim the Stl/soon to be LA Rams as your team.  Your body language reeks of defeat and of someone standing over your shoulder saying "don't call anyone out, you also make mistakes".  My advise to you would be to take this team over.  Spags will not be here after this season nor should Devaney, so now is the time.  The cards are laid out perfectly.  If the coaching staff doesn't want to motivate YOUR offense, then it is up to you to do so.  Look to your forefathers for inspiration (Marino, Manning, Steve Young, Favre, Warner to name a few) and you will notice one very common factor.  Leadership to the enth degree!  Marino would send his receivers off of the field after a drop and sometimes tell Schula off after, Manning has been in some physical altercations with his line and receivers, Warner often screamed at Bruce and Holt for not giving their best.

This is the fire that you have to display!  Fuck the "Four Pillars".  Not one great team has been founded on "virtue and kindness".  This is pro football for god's sake!  Laurence Taylor was/is a SOB, Rodney Harrison was a dirty SOB and Ronnie Lott would have been fined his entire contract for head hunting. Of course I shouldn't leave Nate Newton and Michael Irvin out either.  The "four pillars" should crumble the first time you get in the face of Brandon Gibson and tell him, he shouldn't have a spot on this roster or tell Jackson he missed his block and cost the team.  This is your team!  Jackson has is nearing the end of a great career and means nothing to the success of this offense, very obviously (almost 1,400 yrds in 09' = 1-15).

You are a starting QB in the NFL and one with ALLl of the tools to be a star.  You face and will increasingly face the most criticism for our offensive ineptitude. It's time to take the reigns and show the NFL that there is a reason you went #1 overall and that most teams wanted to draft you.  You are Sam Bradford, QB of the Rams.  You can control and dictate your offense! Start sending players off of the field when they drop a pass, get in your lineman's faces when they miss a block, tell Jackson he needs to stop dancing before he hits the line.  F' Spags, let him lose his job while you become a leader.  I want to see wide open eyes, cleats digging in before a collision and a Bradford lead Rams victory after the bye.  78 million dollars for the 30th ranked QB in the NFL.  You have got to be kidding.

Bradford should read "Invictus" before every game!

Bradford is like Warner

in terms of his leadership. Warner was not a fiery guy, a player who would get in other players face to try and get them pumped. He is a lead by example guy and from what I have seen Bradford is leading by example. He’s putting his body on the line, not making crucial mistakes by just throwing the ball when getting killed. He’s staying in the pocket even when the whole pocket is collapsing just to get off a 10 yard throw.

I’m not saying he hasn’t made errors this year, cause he has, but he has lead this team as best as anyone could ask of him. I know if I saw a 2nd player going out there every game, not quitting, not giving up, putting 100% into every play, every game while getting demolished at the same time and also not pointing the finger I would go to war for that man. Every press conference he has put the blame on himself, not once calling out coaches or team mates, when it clearly is their fault.

So maybe he does have poor body language, but it’s always after he gets killed for 4 or 5th time or when the drops are numbering around 5.

The fiery guys I have been waiting for are Steven Jackson, Fred Robbins, James Laurianitis, Chris Long, Quintin Mikell and Jason Brown. None of them have stepped up and delivered that inspiring speach. I’m glad Jackson has finally stood up and owned the spotlight. I would have thought he would have done this after week 1, the guy has been in the league since 2004 and has never played on a winning team. Long acts like he’s a grenade on the field with his intensity and attitude, but I have yet to hear him kick anyone in the ass.

Bradford has done more than enough as a leader. Starting from the lockout on. Like Tony Sofli calls, he’s the Big Easy for a reason. He’s a quite, confident, smart franchise QB that speaks with his actions.

You just don't get it.

A quarterback is by default the leader of an offense. The guys that I have listed in the poll are the greatest quarterbacks of the modern era and were fiery leaders. Montana is the only one of them that I have not seen go after his O-Line on the sidelines or a wideout who isn’t performing well. And yes Warner has chewed on most of his receivers and linemen. I remember him correcting Larry Fitzgerald of all people! Hollering at him and using his hands to show Larry where he should have been when Kurt tossed a pick. All of them showed passion in the best of times and the worst of times. Bradford is not performing well and a lot of it has to do with his teammates. We have already figured out that Spags isn’t pushing the team so it’s time for Bradford to become a leader. One out of the top 10 guys on this list was rarely upset with his teammates and Montana had the best offense in the history of the game to work with. Arguably the best pure passer that the sport has ever seen (Marino) and even Manning are the biggest perfectionists to grace the grid iron. When their guys screw up, they are in their face without a second thought. This is not something you can argue. I guess you prefer the listless dead spirited Bulger type.

Actually

Warner did get in players faces, quite often.

by AlwaysARamsFan on Oct 10, 2011 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I do know he was the leader of OU but he never got in the faces of his team's then so

I don’t expect that to happen with the Ram’s. DaFrachize is right when he stated that he is more of a lead by example type of guy. The thing is he had good receivers that could catch and get separation. .

by Freewheeler2 on Oct 5, 2011 5:58 AM CDT reply actions

That's right

Bradford is getting frustrated at the lack of focus and accountability from the surrounding players. How he reacts to that is by playing harder, practicing more, watching more film, working more on the the small things. If I saw my QB putting in that kind of work that would inspire me. Seeing a player with his kind of balls and his work ethic and attitude is more than enough.

If the scrubs on the team don’t care then it really distracts Bradford mentally. It’s obvious. You know he wants to say something, but he takes it and adds it to the other things that he’s carrying on his back.

by DaFranchiZe on Oct 5, 2011 6:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Good Post

Can you please post the differences that between last year of Bradford’s

1) Effort (Playing Harder)
2) Practicing More
3) Time Spent on Film Study
4) Time Spent on Small Things

Also, how you collected that data would be beneficial to know as well.

oh ye of little faith. Giving up on our QB on his 2nd year?

1.) I’ve never seen Sam slack on a play, so I would assume he’s giving 100% effort. I would say that’s no different from last year, you can’t give more than 100%.

2.) During the lockout, Sam organized player practices with as many of the players as he could get together, and once the lockout ended, he would stay late after practice to throw routes with his receivers.

3.) The day the lockout ended, he spent 5 straight hours watching film and going over the playbook with McD, I assume he hasn’t slowed down much since.

4.) See #3, and every talk of the things Sam is working on each week in practice. He busts his ass and practices great every week. Why that isn’t translating to the games is frustrating to everyone on the team, and to the fans.

Sam’s not perfect, he makes mistakes just like everyone else because he is human. He’s also only in his SECOND year for christs sake, and he’s trying to learn how to make his own protection calls as well as learning a complicated new offense.

Guess what Favre did in his 2nd year with the Packers. 19 TDs, 24 INTs. Joe Montana in his 2nd year with the 9ers? 15 TDs, 15 INTs, less than 2,000 passing. Steve Young in his 2nd year with the Bucs, 8 TDs, 13 INTs, and then they traded him to the 9ers. You think they regret that one? I can guarantee you we would regret it as well if we got rid of Bradford.

Two things about me will never change. I will always root for the Rams, and I will always root against the Niners.

Counterpoint

1) DaFranchiZe said playing harder; not just playing as hard as he had in the past
2) Bartell organized the practice. Bradford sent out an e-mail
3) I guess one 5 hour work day is a good enough data point for you. I need a little more convincing
4) How many practices have you witnessed?

Remember the great 2004 and 2005 Rams teams...

Technicalities and symantics. If you agree he’s going 100%, and was also doing so last year, then there is nothing here to complain or argue about.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/15168680/rams-bradford-organizes-rookie-symposium-on-practice-field

I guess if you want to ignore that I also said he practices great every week, and if you have played any football at all, you know film review is at least a weekly occurance, if not daily for the pros.

I haven’t witnessed any, but I guess I’ll just assume all the players, coaches, and sports columnists who are reporting great practices are all liars, and you are the sole distributor of truth.

Two things about me will never change. I will always root for the Rams, and I will always root against the Niners.

by DuhhhRams! on Oct 5, 2011 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Missing the point

My argument is not one of semantics. Rather, I am just pointing out that you really do not know what Bradford is doing.

I know the practice that you are referring to and Bartell organized it. Bradford just sent an e-mail out to the offensive guys. Here is a quote from that story which implies that fact, “It’s important because rookies in this situation are the ones who are going to suffer,” said Laurinaitis, who helped organize the practices along with Bradford and cornerback Ron Bartell."

I know that NFL players watch a lot of film. To say that Sam is “watching more film” means that you know his present level of film study is greater than his previous level. Just because he watched for 5 hours in one day (for me, a pretty unimpressive feat) does not mean that he is watching any more film now than he did in the past. Nor does it show that he watches more film than any player on the Rams or on any other roster in the NFL.

I never said that Sam was not spending more time on the small things, just that you do not know whether or not that is true. Of course everyone is going to be complimentary of Bradford’s practice habits, just like they were complimentary of Bulger and Warner before him. Go find me a reporter saying that Bulger neglected the small things. You can’t. Why? Because those types of articles are nearly always skewed to be complimentary of the players. It takes a guy like Jamarcus Russell showing up 50 pounds overweight or Matt Leinart to have a picture snapped of him doing a beer bong for anything like that to get written.

The bottom line is that you don’t know how much time he puts in studying film, lifting weights, or throwing footballs. You don’t know the true opinions of his teammates and you don’t know how hard he is trying. To say that he is doing those things better than the other 52 guys on the roster is ignorant.

Remember the great 2004 and 2005 Rams teams...

by Marmie is the best on Oct 5, 2011 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

That quote only proves that all 3 of them helped organize it. I must have missed the part that says “Sam just sent out an email”. Not sure where you’re getting that from.

I’m going to trust what the players, coaches and sports writers say, because they are there, they are watching, and they pass what they see on to us. You have a gripe for some reason or another, and are a much less reputable source, so I’m going to go with what they tell me.

And I never said he was trying harder than the other guys (though judging the play our WRs and O line are turning in, I would assume it). You just seem to be saying he tries less. And I may not know, but don’t act like you know anymore than I. I’ll take what I read from the writers and players with a grain of salt, I’ll take what I read from you with much less than that.

Two things about me will never change. I will always root for the Rams, and I will always root against the Niners.

by DuhhhRams! on Oct 5, 2011 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions

My point

There is no proof that he has done any of those 4 things that we were originally talking about. I never said that I know, just that there are absolutely no facts. You can’t say that Bradford is spending more time watching film or working on the little things with any kind of proof.

In the article that the Post-Dispatch ran, Sam is quoted as saying that Bartell set everything up and Bradford just e-mailed the offensive guys. This article did not go into that much detail.

I am not trying to rag on Bradford, but it seems some of his supporters cannot handle the fact that he is not a successful NFL QB yet. So, they have to make up things to justify their overly high opinion of him.

If you trust the coaches, I posted a link below to an article that says no one works harder than the offensive line.

Montana was a 3rd rounder who wasn't all that great at Notre Dame and wasn't expected to take the starting job for a few years....

Manning did have an excellent second season in which the Colts went 13-3 and Steve Young was on an expansion team and one of the worst teams in NFL history (look it up). So what was your point? That you are wrong once again and that I am tired of listening to you sniveling points of view based purely on “what you think” and not what is real? The Lions were far worse than we were (once again their record proving that FACT) yet they are 4-0 and are a much better team statistically and in record, than we are. Matt Stafford has already earned the respect of his teammates and you can see it on the field, if you have watched a Lions game. He is fiery; he is very excitable and is in control of HIS offense. A RB does not take control of an offense. Like I said later in the comments, let me know when Benjarvis Green-Ellis takes control of the Pats or Joseph Addai of the Colts. A running back touches the ball 10-25 times a game and if he is good gains 1,200 yards. A bad QB throws for 3,000! Get it yet?

I guys that you left off....

Dan Marino set just about every single season passing record that he could set in his second season and went to the Super Bowl, Brady won the Super bowl, Elway went 13-3 and made the playoffs. Brett Favre’s second season was his first season in GB and he didn’t even start until the 4th week of the season. Warner was never signed until the Rams signed him in 98’ and in 99’ (his second season) HE WON THE SUPER BOWL. Seeing a trend yet? Greatness is greatness, it doesn’t develop; it just is. Bradford may end up being a decent QB but right now he doesn’t come close to the greats and with the "put my head down attitude" he will never be.

He's doing a wonderful job of it.

Let me know when BenJarvis Green-Ellis, Ryan Matthews or Joseph Addai take command of their offense. Or maybe Donnie Jones will step up and lead the team; he may be our best player. Doesn’t that just sound stupid to you? A quarterback is the leader of the offense in all facets. He is expected to be a coach on the field and a leader in the locker room. Obviously his leadership style is not working if he is leading anything at all. Someone made the comment that he has the personality of Marc Bulger and I have to agree a little. I do think that he has “the fire” in him but Spags would call him out if he unleashed. Those mumbles and clenched fists when he walks off of the field should be "Let’s get the F&*ck up and if you can’t then don’t take the field today. “I am sick of getting hit 15 times a game, taking big hits only to watch my pass bounce off of your hands!” “Think about all of those poor saps writing for TST right now….any of them would give their first born to be on this field!” “Get up, or get out!”

SJAX

should get on the team as a whole behind closed doors. I think he has been the work horse of this team and would be in position to call out anyone on the team. In terms of in game ass chewings specifically the Oline or WR Sam should be a little more vocal with these guys. If you look at the most recent QBs to win superbowls they were not afraid to confront those on offense who weren’t playing up to par. Sam has to take on that role or this will never be his team. That’s great that he leads by example as he does work hard and is a good role model but in this society of players that means little if anything. To compare him with Warner’s mentality while a Ram isn’t apples to apples. I mean really he had Bruce, Holt, Proehl, and Faulk. He had a far superior line than what Sam has so there wasn’t nearly the need to be vocal that there is now. Bulger is a good comparison because he took a beating as the the teams talent headed for the crapper. Bulger had talent no question but I think his demeanor led to his demise.

Good poll btw. I agree that I like to see fire in a QB (and a coach for that matter) but it’s a locker full of 53 different personalities, so making a generalization on what they need is tough…while making a generalization on what fans want may be easier. I agree, that I’d like to see this post come to fruition, but mostly to put myself at ease, not sure if it’d help the team very much.

with everyone. watching sam during the game shaking his head, walking slow to the sidelines and sitting on the bench next to his oc. yes hes quiet, low keyed but that needs to change for him and the team. he needs to get pissed off at people, get into their grill go to players on the bench and let them know when they did good and when they did crappy.show some fire, let them see that you care whats going. when you walk around like somebody kicked your dog, thats reflected. this is your offense let them know that, or your going to keep picking yourself off the ground. just a thought.

well , actually I think Bradford attitude wise is a cross between Brady and Warner. Kurt never got in peoples face, he was a leader by actions type player. He had a quiet confidence about him. Brady is one of those “I have something to prove”. Which stems from his draft selection. He has admitted that ever since he was drafted in the 6th round he has this desire to prove everyone wrong every time he steps on the field.

To Bradford has the attitude of wanting to be perfect no matter what and at everything he does and the desire to be the best. I think he has Warner’s demeanor with Peyton Manning’s desire to win. And if this year has taught us anything about Bradford it has taught us that Bradford has the toughness of Favre.

Lets just say Bradford is his own man, has his own way and young quarterbacks should be compared to him.

Yea I have a lot of respect for Brady for what he's done

Now on pace to beat Marino’s passing record (still to be seen). I just think the dude has the best pocket presence ( if only behind Peyton) in the modern era and when he steps onto the field you just expect him to do some shit you’re going to be talking about for the whole week. I think the thing that I like the most is he still doesn’t feed into himself being the best of all time and still plays with a chip on his shoulder. I can honestly say he’ll be one of the greatest (if not the greatest) of all time ( btw don’t smash me on that, Montana even said it)

Cam Newton

You have no facts to back your argument. Cam has taken a terrible team and made them competitive again. The Panther were 2-14 and flat out terrible. Newton is one of the higher rated QB’s in the game, the team has scored a ridiculous amount of points and they will win 5-8 games this year in a very tough division. Manning would quit football entirely with the team we have because they are an undisciplined bunch of jokers and he couldn’t handle that. He would most likely have a stroke after the 7th dropped pass of the game.

Yes, I'm sure Sam is reading this.

As for the poll, I was only the 5th vote for Elway?! Ridiculous, I say!

"Vick’s 100x the player Warner was.
Desean’s not quite at Holts level.
McCoy’s giving Faulk a run for his money.
Maclin’s better than Bruce.

"Warner never took over games."

Signed, wild_eagle - the most delusional person in the entire universe.

I agree douchie. I voted Marino, the best pure passer to ever play.

I am not sure that Warner even truly belongs on this list but I figured the “Homers” would have someone to vote for if I put him on. Great QB no doubt but he needed another 3-5 years of excellent production to be listed with Marino, Elway, Montana Young, Favre and Elway, so just disregard the Warner votes.
