Rams Sending WR Austin Pettis "Back To Square One?"
The St. Louis Rams have some roster decisions to make. They released Mike Sims-Walker to free up a roster spot for Brandon Lloyd. When they add Mark Clayton and Marquis Johnson back to the active roster, they have two more moves to make to free up those spaces. Knowing that, it made this cryptic tweet from rookie wide receiver Austin Pettis stand out.
"Back to square one" could mean any number of things. Most likely, his role is being reduced; he played just three snaps last week, according to PFF. With Greg Salas finally showing some potential, Pettis' snaps are only likely to decrease.
Maybe they plan on releasing him with the intent of adding him to the practice squad. It's unlikely that the third-round pick would clear waivers. I certainly don't think that Pettis would be released outright, but it's hard to tell.
The most likely candidate for release to make room for Clayton would seem to be recently added WR/KR Nick Miller, who was inactive at Green Bay last week.

I don't see it... Miller will probably go
with Pettis dropping down the depth chart. + he has shown he can punt return now
TurfShowTimes editor and don't forget to check out our Rams Breakdowns on YouTube
Punt returning...
Well that’s an ability Salas hasn’t shown. Point Pettis.

Haha
Don’t think is like seeing salas return another kick..
Sam Bradford + Alshon Jeffery = All other teams are screwed!!

Pettis has shown he can fair catch..Which was AWESOME!!!
I dont put much stock into the GB game. The GB punter is terrible & their special teams im hearing isnt that great. If i had to pick between Pettis & Salas I would pick Salas. Just me I dont think either of them should be PR.
Salas really only had one chance & that was the NYGs game and besides the one fumble he wasnt too bad.
Keepin it KFC as always (Kool, Funky, & Clean)
Wasnt to bad?
He sucked bro, let’s call it like it was..

he'll still be returning punts.
He’s not going to get much play at WR though with Lloyd and Clayton coming back, and Salas and DX showing they can ball last week.
Two things about me will never change. I will always root for the Rams, and I will always root against the Niners.
Well id still take Pettis over Salas

Pettis also hasn't shown he can show up to a game.
He has 6 catches on the season. I’d like to see more out of him.

Pettis caught everything thrown his way the game before the bye...
he was our only WR not dropping pass and that was consistent.
my question is...
why in the blue hell did the rams bring in jerious norwood for then? for what!? i thought he was supposed to be doing pun/kick returns too? i thought he was a specialist on that? releasing pettis would be yet another stupid decision from the F.O. this guys going to be good…hes a freakin rookie for christ sake!

I saw that tweet from him
Tried to figure out wtf he meant by it. I’m guessing he’ll just return punts until he improves in practice
If anyone cares what I have to say on Twitter: @Sergey_Konyshev
I assume this just means he's returning punts and be on the bottom of the depth chart
Shame, he seemed to take advantage of his chances whereas Salas has ranged from absolutely terrible to decent. Not that I’m giving up on either of them, but I’m not sold on Salas being better than Pettis.

I hope it just means he has to earn a spot on the offense. Id like to see some more
40 yard punt returns.
- And here's the Rams' 2010 season in a series. Incomplete pass, 18-yard run, incomplete pass, 7-yard run, 5-yard pass, 3-yard run, sack, incomplete pass, punt. Shoot me. - 3K
If Pettis gets released I will be very very angry...
It's put up or shut up time for these WR's. Someone's going to have to perform or else they'll all be hitting the street. ESPECIALLY YOU ALEXANDER
Pettis has shown enough. To suggest he’d be released is silly.

I don’t get it. is it because he’s a bad route runner or can’t get separation. He’s showed he can catch the ball. I don’t think he’s gotten a fair chance to prove himself. If he gets released someone will pick him up.

I personally like Salas a bit more than Pettis
I loved one of his catches in the middle of the field. Right after catching it, he bulldozed one of the defenders and drove him backwards. It was awesome.
salas over pettis in my book too
i think both will be decent to good down the road. it is not like some of those in front of them are that great. dx is one hit away from retiring and gibson is …well gibson. lloyd until he resigns is just in rental. who does that leave, mark?
hang in there austin. not everybody becomes a starter in the first year. most do not actually.
Whatever it means
and given the reduced role and the emergence of Salas, it still bugs me that the FO didn’t use the 3rd rd pick on Mason Foster. I know I wasn’t the only one who was hoping they drafted Foster and given his production, it shows once again poor drafting.
