About McDaniels From Someone Who Knows Better Than the MSM

Good evening TST, I'm primarily a Broncos maniac; however, the Rams are my #2 because my best buddy is a die-hard Rams fan and now they have Josh McD. I'm also very impressed by coach Spags and when Denver hired McD I had actually preferred Spags as the choice instead of McD at the time.

Star-divide

Now, I understand that the mainstream view on McD is that he is a cheating, franchise quarterback trading, arrogant punk kid. I am here to tell you that this view is an ignorant one. The MSM and local media in Denver spewed so much hate on McD that the average fan would think that McD was the anti christ.

McD needed more time to build the team he planned. The media and ignorant crybaby fans in Denver couldn't handle the concept of rebuilding. As a born member of Broncos Country, I can tell you that our fans (on average) are spoiled rotten, instant gratification babies. They have been blessed by having one of the winningest franchises in the NFL.

Luckily, our new management (John Elway and company) is keeping the best parts of what McD started. Mark my words, the McD legacy in Denver has just begun and we will reap the benefits of what he started offensively for years to come.

Amoeba offense is what it has been called. It is very complex and don't expect Bradford to be totally proficient until year 2. But, trust me, if given enough time, Bradford will be amazing. He has the accuracy and smarts to be phenomenal in this offense. McD tailors the offense to completely exploit the weaknesses of each oponent specificaly. This takes a very smart group of players to be successful.

Another thing about McD is that he is aggressive on 4th down. You will see him go for it more often than you are probably accustomed to.

He is far more emotional during the games than he is in a press conference setting.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcrl7BPY-64

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vIOBUFRVkg

You will find that in press conferences McD is careful and complimentary toward opponents.  He is very guarded about injuries but, surprisingly, very open about discussing the game and specific plays.  Not that he would be in front of the press for you guys.

McDaniels is very intelligent, he has a mathamatics background and probably fits some of the nerdy stereotypes as far as relating to people on a group level.  Interpersonally, I believe there is nothing fake about him.  He is probably blunt to a fault with people.  Once he develops a relationship with someone he is loyal to the end.

I strongly believe that Josh McDaniels will one day be the head coach of a super bowl winning team, and probably more than one.  McD is a fiery competitor who has football in his blood.  He will be a fixture in the NFL for a very long time.  He will not be with the Rams forever, I think you have your guy in Spagnuolo.  Some NFL owner (hopefully not in the AFC West) will give McD another chance and he will be a successful head coach within 5 years.  He will help the Rams to a deep playoff run or two and maybe even a Lombardi trophy.

Anyway, just some thoughts I wanted to share with TST.   I'm very excited about the Rams and I hope to become a part of your community here if you'll have me.

Best wishes going forward!

GO BRONCOS!!!!

GO RAMS!!!!

i hope you are right

but ive been praying every night that shurmur would be replaced by mcdaniels since micky got fired.. at first it was wishful thinking but im pleased it became a reality. THANK YOU CLEVELAND

by mh39 on Jan 20, 2011 10:17 PM CST reply actions

haha naw i followed the patriots very closely for a few years

primarily because my gf was a direhard pats fan, and absolutely loved how they approached offense. Josh Mcdaniels is a great offensive mind. When he went to Denver i became a bronco fan, (second to the rams ofcourse). I thought he really got the short end of the stick in denver. I think a number of seasoned veteran coaches would have done what he did in denver. Heck if bill belichick took over denver he would have got rid of cutler and marshall. 2 of the bitchest players in the nfl. You can’t blame micky from trying to get his guy in denver, he didnt know what he had in cutler and wanted someone he knew had a future. This year is cutlers first year on a winning team since high school, that reflects the qb. Anyways, i thought it would be an awesome deal to have one of the best offensive and defensive minds on the same team, but again wishful thinking. I supported shurmur til week 17 but his atrocious effort esp regarding sjax was infuriating. but i only wanted shurmur gone if we had mcdaniels. looks like things worked out great! GO RAMS!!

Oh, how do you feel about the hire of John Fox?

by mh39 on Jan 20, 2011 10:57 PM CST up reply actions

John Fox

He’s going to be okay, I hope- maybe just what we need after making the mistake of not giving McD more time. I’m definitely exited to see the Rams shape up. I will reserve judgement on Fox for the time being.

i was never too impressed with Fox as a head coach

but i do like the teams he has put together during his years in carolina. Hes great at personnel decisions tho

I'm interested in seeing what he can do.

McDaniels compared to Martz?

i just keep worrying about these two offensive minds are too similar.

Will Mcdaniels on a 4th and inches outside of the red zone decide to call a ten man receiver route with the qb snapping the ball to himself?
Sure that’s exaggerating things a bit however hopeful the sense of trepidation isn’t lost.

by OcRamfan on Jan 21, 2011 12:37 AM CST reply actions

Never saw any 10 receiver sets, lol

I would call McD mathematically aggressive, or situationally aggressive. McD will apply a strategy in a situation that may not outwardly make sense, but the strategy is based on the mathematical probability of something happening in that circumstance over the course of manny years. I don’t know if that makes sense. Have you heard the term “game theory?”

This is why I asked the question of Spags' knowledge.

McD would base those decisions on probability of outcome and Expected Points Value. Hopefully Spags also keeps an eye on the maths of football.

"When they should be throwing to the cutoff man, they are reading Men's Health for ab workout tips. When they should be sacrifice bunting, they are buying effeminate designer jeans. When they should be fouling off pitches, they are masturbating. Always, they are masturbating."

Math

I wouldn’t say it wins games, but it does contribute. Every OC and DC out there use probability in their game plans and play calls. Although some more than others, i.e. McD.

They will notice and they will giggle.

DONNIE FUCKING JONES FOR PRO BOWL!

by stlcardsfan4 on Jan 24, 2011 10:56 AM CST up reply actions

in the sense that scoring more points means you win

then it does every time.

But surely you don’t go for it on 4th down because there’s an 85% chance that it’d be successful because you’ve called this same play against another team and they’ve given up 3/4 4th downs already this season.

Surely you make these calls because you’re down by 9 points, have 5 minutes to go, they’ve struggled to score in the 2nd half and you need points.
For me, if you need points and you’re down by 9 with 5 mins to go and the opposition has struggled offensively in the 2nd half, you ignore probability and take the score and look to get another possession or two.

Every game is different and with regards to placing emphasis on maths for gametime decisions seems foolish in my eyes. It’s like arguing in sociological terms about the merits of Quantative and Qualitative research methods.
For me, I’m a believer in Qualitative research, as too much emphasis is placed on numbers with little truth in them.

Did we not see Orton look likely to break Marino’s passing record despite being on a team that was losing games and his performances were often referred to as poor?

so for example in the broncos vs colts game you'd have supported that 4th down call in the redzone?

although the other offense is actually potent as opposed to my scenario.

why would you give yourself less time to potentially score 2 scores, than give yourself more time to score 1?

What was left for him to do to your broncos?

I’m intrigued.

I’m not smart enough to see what his plan was going long term.

Do you believe tebow can be an NFL qb?

i think he showed late in the season that he can be an nfl qb

yea he has problems but he looked decent. i wish i could have seen him with micky calling plays tho.

by mh39 on Jan 23, 2011 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

50% cp is decent?

that’s poor dude. he was way off, threw bad INTs and reverted to his old release.

I’ll give him a pass due to the rookie status. But I’d rather take a flyer on someone like Cam Newton over Tebow.

I don’t think we saw anything to suggest he’ll be more than a backup at this level. which technically IS an NFL QB, just not a good one.

Yet another Broncos & Rams fan

I actually lived in St. Louis Since 2004. I have been a Broncos fan since 1977, when I was 6 years old and watched the craziness of the year the Broncos went to the Super Bowl.

I have been trying to be a Rams fan since 2004. I know that sounds weird, but seriously, though I am a Broncos fan through and through, I always thought it would be nice to be a fan of the home team. But I couldn’t.

Until McDaniels is hired on as offensive coordinator! WOW! Talk about having your cake and eating it too! I loved McD, and agree with the author of this article. McD shouldn’t have ever been allowed so much power, but he is a good coach, an excellent football mind, and lots of passion.

Throw in Bradford, who impressed me strongly this season, and I think I am actually a Rams fan! I can get into them..they interest me.

Of course, Broncos will always be my daddy…

McD should do great things for your passing game

Hopefully he can raise Bradford up to a new level.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
