25 Things RamChop Thinks...

The statements below are just MHO. If you care to agree, disagree, or critique them, that's fine. Everyone around here pretty much knows that I have skin as thick/tough as leather.

I haven't played a game of football since Dec 1980. But I do watch a heckuva lot of pro football, and have since 1969.  About the best I do these days is pass the ol' pigskin around with my grandson.

1. I'm glad Pat Shurmur is gone.

2. Pete Carroll clearly outcoached Steve Spagnuola in game 16.

3. Jason Smith is overpaid.

4. We need a #1 WR in the worst way.

5. Clayton and Amendola are pretty good as #2 and #3 receivers. Pick another couple from the leftovers.

6. Laurent (the Invisible Man) Robinson should be cut.

7. Adam Goldberg needs to go from starter to b/u ASAP.

8. We have NO capable OLB's.

9. Kevin Dockery should be cut.

10. I don't want TO.

11. Atogwe is no longer worth what he's being paid.

12. Kroenke will not be satisfied with 6-7 wins in 2011.

13. Our 2010 schedule is murderous. We'll HAVE to beat some good teams to get to .500

14. Gilyard apparently doesn't have the mental capacity for the NFL (yes I know he's a rookie, so were Sam and Saffold).

15. We've wasted SJax's most productive years (it was a travesty to give him only 11 touches versus Seattle).

16. I thought when we were 6-6 that we'd end up at 9-7 or at least 8-8.

17. Robbins and Hall are nearing the end of their careers.

18. Chris Long is gonna have to make more than 1-2 tackles per game.

19. Sam did great with no decent targets. But kinda petered out once defenses caught onto his rollout strategy.

20 We left at least four(4) games we shoulda won on the table in 2010;  Cards, Oakland, Tampa, & SF.

21. We don't need Brad Childress.

22. JL is probably my favorite Ram player.

23. We need to dump the tidy whitey uniforms. At least wear blue pants.

24. I hate the Patriots, Seattle and the 49ers in that order.

25. I like coaches like Lombardi, Landry, Ditka and Belicheat. Not players' coaches like Dungy and Spags.

So sue me!

please

explain why OJ is not worth what he is being paid?

and I’m not defending Gilyard too much, but possible reasons for his slow learning may include:
coming into off season late due to graduating (although Danario came in late too)
Learning 5 WR spots. That’s all the WR positions and a lot to learn. No WR should be expected to learn 5 WR spots in a rookie season. That’s on the coach.
They held him back to keep him Practice Squad eligible.

There are some possibilities, but I still think he should have done more when he did play. (although i liked the 3rd and 20 grab)

I don’t disagree with too many of the things here, I think when worded like this it sounds less aggressive and stuff.

Bradford to Onobun!

by Infemous on Jan 14, 2011 4:13 AM CST reply actions

if you compare his numbers to other NFC West Free Safeties

he outclasses them all.

Also, over the last 5 years he’s created more turnovers than Ed Reed.

I’m sorry but there is no way he is not elite, and is not a top 3 FREE Safety in the league.
When you count SS then he moves down, but right now, at his position he is one of the best.
He has the numbers and the role within our D to warrant it and he only earns that much next season, then it goes down. Dude deserves every penny.

I know right

He is “supposed” to be a ballhawk. NO player in the league causes as many turnovers. But one season where he isn’t the leader of the category and now he is crap. Welcome to bizarro world.

If you love something, set it free. If it doesn't come back, find it and kill it.

by gomer7 on Jan 15, 2011 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

yup

entirely baffling.

what’s also confusing is that he may not have lead the league in ‘big plays’ (ints/ff/tds/scks) but if you combine them he has more than any other NFC Safety.
So he’s numerically the best in the NFC right?

I don’t even know where people thinking he didn’t do so well this year came from, i remember him being all over the field.
confused DOT COM.

To me, it's the scheme he is in now

Van touched on this on one of the TSR’s awhile back, but in the past, he’s just been given free reign. That’s why he racked up so many turnovers in season’s past. These last two years he has been in a different system that doesn’t give him as many opportunities, but I think he’s a better player overall then where he was before.

Number 8 is great

and he’s still making big plays, causing turnovers (though not as many) and getting in the backfield.

People need to get off his jock.

by CaliRamMan on Jan 14, 2011 12:41 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

And I actually agreed with 92% of these. Not sure what Gilyard’s made of yet, he hadn’t really gotten a role on the team yet, and was injured most of the season. Also, Atogwe isn’t being used as exclusively as a FS like he was prior, it’s now more of a Left and Right Safety scheme, which should theoretically plug in any SS with moderate coverage skills in either safety position. Makes a ballhawk FS somewhat irrelevant.

All in all, good list.

THIS year's the year. I hope....

With the level of talent we had at the WR position this season...

by stlfan2004 on Jan 15, 2011 7:46 AM CST up reply actions

I think you are dead on with everything except for 11 and 14. I know OJ didn’t show up much at the end of the year but I think that we should at least give him the beginning of next year to prove that he wasn’t just dinged up. I also think that Gilyard deserves training camp next year to prove that he “doesn’t have the capacity.” I don’t completely disagree with that but I find it hard to believe that he is this hard headed. I am glad you said number 18 and if you had made a comment about how Bartell is over rated ( I think Fletcher is already better and Bartell has never impressed me at all) I would have been convinced this was my post even with 11 and 14. Maybe excluding “so sue me!”

by NCRam55 on Jan 14, 2011 9:44 AM CST reply actions

On 11

I think he means OJ is not worth $11M next season. He did not play like a top 5 FS in 2010. I’ll give you #6 FS, but not top 5.
You also left out that Bell is overpaid and should be redesignated as a back-up.

by 81 Witness on Jan 14, 2011 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

I can see that but if your gonna overpay someone I think that OJ has a good head on his shoulders, is intelligent, and hopefully can prove his worth next year. I completely agree and overlooked Bell.

Just on my way out the door for work.....

but the one that stands out to me is #19. Rolling out wasn’t Bradford’s strategy, that would be the coach’s strategy. Spags or Shumer, I’m not sure which, but it definately wasn’t Bradfords. Give criticism where it’s due.

by bdemartin on Jan 14, 2011 9:51 AM CST reply actions

I didn’t interpret it the way you guys are and I’m not sure it was meant to be taken that way. I think that RamChop was saying that when defenses began to focus on the roll out strategy (whoever’s strategy it was) it began to take away from Bradford’s success.

by Midasknight on Jan 14, 2011 11:57 AM CST reply actions

On a debatable note

I still have the feeling that we should trade SJax if its not too late. By the time this team gets to where it needs to be he will be past his prime. Its a fact. And, while it is great having him on the team, and no one appreciates when he runs over someone or breaks off a huge run out of nowhere more than myself, we could put him in a position to make a mark on this league with trophies as opposed to just stats. Also, we’d be setting ourselves up for hopefully at least first round compensation at this point. It would have surely been more in the past. I still think its worth looking at.

by NCRam55 on Jan 14, 2011 12:18 PM CST reply actions

He doesn't have much trade value right now.

Maybe MAYBE we can get a 4th rounder for him. He’s worth far more to us than he is to another team.

I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.

by Midasknight on Jan 14, 2011 12:21 PM CST up reply actions

What would you say Seymour’s value was when the Patriots traded him? As is often said in the draft, it just takes one GM falling for what SJax could do on his team and the value is immediately increased. I feel that its hard to tell whats realistic and whats not for us fans. Everyone is purely speculating, except of course stlcardsfan4, whom holds the trade value of all individuals in the league.

by NCRam55 on Jan 21, 2011 5:14 PM CST up reply actions

Looking back on my previous post, a first would be unlikely but I think if we traded smartly, getting more than a fourth should be more than plausible.

by NCRam55 on Jan 21, 2011 5:17 PM CST up reply actions

A couple three years ago SJax would've brought a war pension. But now we couldn't get nearly what he's worth to us.

Sjax inevitable decline is one of the reasons sooo many of us wouldn’t buy into a 5-year rebuild plan. My hope is that he’ll be a Marcus Allen/Rickey Williams type that can contribute heavily for at least another couple years. I think this team may just be a WR, OLB, OG, DT, a couple more starters, and an aggressive OC away from being able to hold its own against the Packer/Falcon types.

by RamChop on Jan 14, 2011 12:32 PM CST up reply actions

If SJAX was a Patriot his while career

Good chance this year he would have been with another team. That’s Bilicheck. He seems to know when players are a year away from a downslide…

I am expecting SJAX numbers to drop next year… watch a week in the life of steven jackson… the dude is taking a beating and it’s taking a lot to recover… more than normal.

it is crazy

but by 30 years old, a power back like him is just so beat up! Poor guy. He has given us his whole career but I agree with you. I think this coming year will be the first of his decline. I just hope we can give him a really competetive year with a playoff ending.

by stlfan2004 on Jan 15, 2011 7:50 AM CST up reply actions

I really do love the guy but I regret not making the trade when we could. It seems like he never wanted out but I can’t help but think it would have been a win win for us to have traded him. He would have gone to a contender, at least in comparison with our team, and we would have gotten some very quality picks for him which would be entering their prime right about now. As it is now, he is likely just exiting his prime.

by Midasknight on Jan 14, 2011 6:53 PM CST up reply actions

I'm sorry, but that's an AWFUL idea.

Trading SJax would be the worst decision this organization has ever made (as far as my lifetime goes). 1,000 yards is STILL productive. How about we solve the abysmal run blocking and get this man some playmakers, then we can judge him/talk about him being traded if he’s unsuccessful. It just makes absolutely no sense at this point to trade our 2nd best player (I’ve always liked OJ more) for ANYONE. I don’t care who we trade him for, Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson, Arian Foster whomever. None of those backs will be successful the way our o-line blocks. No running back in the league has to put so much effort just for a 3 yard play. He’s been the one of the 2 constants over these past 5-6 years, there’s no point in trading him and regressing when he’s done absolutely nothing but be fantastic every year.

by ramswo85 on Jan 14, 2011 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

he's not worth much of anything anymore

I’d want at least a 2nd round pick in return for his performance and he just doesn’t command that in the trade market anymore

All in all

I have to agree with the man. With the exception of a few points, those are spot on.
13) change to “2011” schedule
22) JL has been my favorite Ram since he started his 1st practice with the first team. I think we are both on the same page as far as appreciation for a smart, productive player.
25) I’m sorry, but I hate the Seagulls more than any team…and SF is a close second. NE doesn’t have enough of a negative impact on my team year after year for me to dislike them that much.

Rec'd and agree with all, especially:

In all honesty, we may not get to .500 next season. With OC and possibly strategy changing, new rookies to break in, old guys perhaps falling off more, and a tougher schedule = hmmmm

actually do some research

our schedule is the 28th in terms of SOS so its super easy again

by zaviex on Jan 16, 2011 3:31 AM CST up reply actions

Let's talk reality here... not paper.

The strength of schedule is misleading because our division, where we play 6 games, was sooo lousy in 2010. And we could only go .500 against these guys. Then we play the NFC East with perenially good teams like the Eagles, NYG and a Dallas team not led by Wade Phillips and minus Tony Romo. Pittsburgh and Baltimore should be real fun. Cincy is one year removed from being division champs and Cleveland is never a pushover. And then there’s that game against Green Bay. Yeah boy next season should be a cakewalk…lol.

by RamChop on Jan 16, 2011 11:30 AM CST up reply actions

Baltimore will be if its here

i live in Baltimore only seen the rams play once here

by zaviex on Jan 16, 2011 11:46 PM CST up reply actions

so true. then add in Philly, NYG, Dallas and even Washington (whom we beat one year and lose to the next).

I doubt we can beat the Seahawks and 49ers X2 either. And throughout our history Cincy and Cleveland have given us grief. IF we’re to have a chance at doing good we need a new #1 WR, an OG, DT and OLB X2. Not to mention replacements for Darby and Toast.

by RamChop on Jan 17, 2011 11:32 AM CST up reply actions

comeon we arent that bad.

Seattle is getting worse we are on the rise and their sched is harder than ours, 49ers are in turmoil we can get them 2x for sure

Lets be honest 7-9 probably wins the west again. If we sweep the division and 1 one game outside well be golden.

i think we sweep the west so 6-0 beat Washington, Cincy, Cleveland, New Orleans(if its home) and we go 10-6 that isnt unrealistic at all.

by zaviex on Jan 17, 2011 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

and can we give up on the WR?

Deveany has made it clear he thinks Danario is that #1 WR

personally i thought week 17 he had played his way off the team but i guess not

by zaviex on Jan 17, 2011 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

thats what I thought

but then Deveany says “Once he goes through OTA’s hell be 100x better” that screams “no way im using a pick on a WR” to me

by zaviex on Jan 17, 2011 8:03 PM CST up reply actions

I think that's just hype.

No way can they count on DX to be the #1. Not when he takes one false step and has to have another knee surgery. Sure, he ought to be better for going through the OTAs, but he still won’t be a solid #1. Devaney was just playing to the crowd.

I think I agree with all of them except

maybe number 8. I think Diggs is capable, but capable is a pretty bottom-level adjective. You put too many “capable” guys on the same team, and the losses start piling up.

You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

by 3k on Jan 14, 2011 3:14 PM CST reply actions

I expected to disagree with a lot of these, but to my surprise this was a pretty hard post to find fault with

I’m not really glad that Shurmur is gone though, mostly indifferent. He was nothing special, but him staying would have given the Rams some much needed stability.

Overpaying a little for Atogwe is a necessary evil, we simply can’t allow any important players to leave before we make our playoff run next season.

I’d like to think the Jury is still out on Gilyard, but I’ve got to admit he doesn’t inspire much confidence.

by TheBirds on Jan 14, 2011 3:44 PM CST reply actions

Only a few disagreements
  1. - anyone chosen in the top 10 is overpaid. Sam Bradford is overpaid!
  1. - I still what Atogwe can bring to the table, he’s one of the best turnover creating safeties in the league (FF + INT)
  1. - No proof of that. Sure they’re getting up in age but that doesn’t mean they still can’t be productive for another 2-3 years. I don’t think it’s fair to say they’re nearing the end of their careers after each had great seasons. Pat Williams is still playing and he’s like 70.
  1. - I like the white uni’s.

Other than that, it all seems reasonable.

Love the post

it’s already been said, but I agree with everything but Sam’s rollout. He was just running the plays called into him, but he did seem to go to that at times when he should have just stepped into the pocket and sling it.

by papapegasus on Jan 14, 2011 10:28 PM CST reply actions

We'll see more pocket passes as his career progresses

He did a lot of his scrambling because both his receivers weren’t getting open and he was still learning to read the field. His roll-outs bought him time and got his receivers open. I’m pretty giddy at the thought of him eventually having his timing down with his receivers and knowing a system well enough to pick apart a defense as well as being able to scramble when needed. He will be a pain in the ass for defenses.

20 We left at least four(4) games we shoulda won on the table in 2010; Cards, Oakland, Tampa, & SF.-very true but i wont count the 1st two because Sam was just getting acclimated
21. We don’t need Brad Childress.- Nobody needs Chilly
22. JL is probably my favorite Ram player.-Animal Junior
24. I hate the Patriots, Seattle and the 49ers in that order.- i dont particularly hate any team so its whatever with me
25. I like coaches like Lombardi, Landry, Ditka and Belicheat. Not players’ coaches like Dungy and Spags.- Ditka fuckin sucked and Dungy was a champ other than that i want Gruden hes a hard nosed O-Line coach and apparently Spags is a dick to his team.

FALSE
1. I’m glad Pat Shurmur is gone.- he worked well with the players he was just about to take off the reins
11. Atogwe is no longer worth what he’s being paid.- Hes top 3 at FS for sure and unlike Ed Reed he can actually cover(yes i have watched reed and he cant cover for shit ask any ravens fan)
13. Our 2010 schedule is murderous. We’ll HAVE to beat some good teams to get to .500- its actually one of the easiest because we get to play the NFC west and we should run that next year
18. Chris Long is gonna have to make more than 1-2 tackles per game. No he wont DE rarely make tackles in a 4-3
23. We need to dump the tidy whitey uniforms. At least wear blue pants.- i like them but we need a legit alternate badly Maybe a black uni or we bring back the gold or we take that sexy yellow from the throwbacks and make us something gorgeous

Agreed with 20 from a list made by Ram Chop never woulda believed it. Anyway i strongly disagree with 11 and perhaps 1

Where did you come up with the last phrase

in your response to #25? Everything I read says the players greatly respect Spags and are happy to play hard for him. Can you support your statement with any real evidence?

by andyhawk on Jan 16, 2011 10:59 PM CST up reply actions

yes the article on The equipment manager

by team i meant his staff. Hes a players coach but apparently a control freak and always critical of his staff

that article is bullshit

it’s not even worth the internet page it’s printed on.

Team is the players. Staff is the staff.

They aren’t the same. And you can’t believe anything the Riverfront Times prints. It’s a scandal sheet that lives to print wild accusations against anyone in a leadership position. Give it a rest until you have real proof.

Baloney! Where do you come up with this nonsense?

6,000 – 7,000 out of 67,000 isn’t more than half in any math I’ve ever done. Why don’t you try to use facts once in a while.

by andyhawk on Jan 17, 2011 11:02 PM CST up reply actions

i wasnt at the game and i dont live in STL

but Sando was there and said that the stadium seemed split 50/50 if not slanted towards KC thats what i went off

by zaviex on Jan 18, 2011 7:42 PM CST up reply actions

So you read some outlandish statement somewhere

and you immediately believe it and post it like it’s a fact. Terrific.

by andyhawk on Jan 18, 2011 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

He sure wasn't this time

if that’s really what he said. Or did he maybe say the KC fans were making as much noise as the Rams fans? I find it hard to believe he would say half or more of the fans there were for KC if he was actually there, but the noise level is another issue and one that is affected to some extent by where you sit. In my section there were less than 5 KC fans out of a hundred, and they weren’t making much noise. Some of the sections routinely sold to out of town fans did have quite a bit of noise going for the Chiefs.

by andyhawk on Jan 18, 2011 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

You have got to be kidding!

I’m not even going to respond to any more of this nonsense. That’s a pregame picture from ground level that shows a few seats in one area, many of which are still empty. Stop trying to justify a false statement and just man up and admit you were wrong.

By the way, did you notice Rampage is wearing a red suit too? I guess that means he’s a KC fan.

by andyhawk on Jan 19, 2011 10:26 PM CST up reply actions

those seats arent empty

if you take a look at the entire gallery from that game, there seems to be about split 50-50 amounts of fans in every shot

by zaviex on Jan 19, 2011 10:53 PM CST up reply actions

I was there. There were about 10% KC fans.

You weren’t there, you have no idea. Stop with the nonsense.

by andyhawk on Jan 20, 2011 11:10 AM CST up reply actions

Ive been to a lot of games and head the breakdown dead wrong its hard to tell from the stands.

I went to the Ravens-Steelers game this weekend and thought there was about 85-15 and afterwards i saw in the paper it was closer to 96-4. Also the year the ravens went 6-10 i went to the home game against the steelers week 17 and there was easily about 50-50 fans there.

Id have to believe Sando’s account not because i dont trust you but Sando provides strong non-biased NFC west material and i dont think hed make something up for an article

by zaviex on Jan 20, 2011 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

I give up. If Sando said it, give us the link.

The Rams front office provided the figure of 6,000 to 7,000. I was there and saw the stands. Anyone that says 50% of the fans were for KC is either an idiot or he’s lying. You go on believing what you want.

by andyhawk on Jan 21, 2011 10:55 PM CST up reply actions

I think he may have read these reports

This one from Jim Thomas states that between the 40 yard lines there was a pretty even split of fans.

And this was Sando’s take, stating that Chiefs fans outnnumbered Rams fans in some parts of the stadium.

I don’t remember any reports, so it might have been these two having been read a little bit quick that lead to the confusion.

  1. 24. I hate the 49ers! Period end of discussion! No team pisses me off more!

Don’t totally disagree with..

  1. 25 I like coaches like Lombardi, Landry, Ditka and Belicheat, but I have no problems with a player’s coach like Rex Ryan. I like his talking up his team, I like the bravado, I like his attitude, "screw you, you suck, and we are going to kick your ass!

I totally aggree with..

  1. Shurmur sucked! I believe it was he that was out coached in Seattle and in Frisco and a couple other games as well. I was thrilled to death that he got the Cleveland job where Holgren is really going to coach that team, he just needed a puppet!

Go Rams!!!

by Ron Winkler on Jan 19, 2011 8:18 AM CST reply actions

Chop, I'm like 98%

in agreement, with the exception of 25. I like this Spags. I think he’s a good fit, especially with Mcdaniels coming in.I think it works. As for Otogwe and the rest of the dbacks, I’m in total agreement. We have NO shutdowns. It will make the difference in our defense, if we can find something at outside LB.

by Brawnwitch on Jan 20, 2011 11:07 PM CST reply actions

I could add a few more things...

Surely, we can trade picks or acquire a #1 WR in FA. A true #1 followed by Clayton, Amendola and maybe Avery would give Sam the Ram some legitimate targets. To me that equates to more TD’s and less FG’s. A new OG is gonna be essential to Sam’s protection and the ability for SJax to run inside or up the middle. I’m convinced Goldberg’s presence hurt Jason Brown’s performance. We can’t do much with Bell, I think he has some kind of “lifetime” contract. Greco is obviously of no value and needs to be cut. Setterstrom may come back from his injury – he’s better than Goldberg or Greco. But at best an average player. Even if Ni’all Diggs comes back and plays mediocre again, we HAVE TO HAVE a good OLB on the other side. Lousy OLB play was a major reason for our lapses on defense last season. SJax will be declining either in 2011 or 2012 and neither Darby, nor Toast are worth a crap. We better be looking for a good RB too. Although we’ll never find one as good as SJax was for the last 7 years. Due to aging, I’m worried about Hall and Robbins on the D-Line. Ryan was a cluster flop. Scott, Ah You and Selvie are all less than average performers. Gibson is mediocre. That allows other teams to concentrate on Chris Long and hold him to 1-2 tackles per game and maybe 8 sacks per year or 1/2 per game. Problems…

by RamChop on Jan 22, 2011 12:48 PM CST reply actions

A reasonable thought ...

… but at the time, you, me and the rest of the world would have ripped the Rams if we had picked him at #2.

We had to pick, Smith, Curry, Eugene Monroe or Mark Sanchez.

All things considered, I’m glad we picked Smith.

I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.

Shhhhhhh....

Stop speaking in such a rational way.

by TheSmart1 on Jan 24, 2011 10:29 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

NO....

Smith is a “BUST” because he was :
!. picked 2nd over all
2. suppose to be our Left Tackle
3. and is being paid like a 2nd over all pick that’s suppose to be our Left Tackle.

by ZamRam on Jan 24, 2011 7:48 AM CST up reply actions

You have an interesting definition of "bust".

A guy who can play a solid RT and probably will for years is hardly what I would call a bust. Is he overpaid for the position he’s playing? Sure. Could he have played LT if we hadn’t drafted Saffold, who turned out much better than anyone expected? Probably.

To me a “bust” is someone who came in with great expectations and turned out to not even be good enough to start, or maybe was even cut, not someone who is playing regularly and doing pretty well. If it turned out that Saffold couldn’t handle LT, I think Smith would be there and doing a decent job. Is he as good as the Rams hoped? Probably not. But he isn’t a “bust”, I don’t think. Life is not all black and white. It’s not either all-star or bust.

by andyhawk on Jan 24, 2011 11:16 AM CST up reply actions

im fairly sure he put it in quotes because he doesnt think hes actually a bust

i surely dont. In fact i think hes pretty damn good watch some of the seattle tape. Saffold got beaten 4x Jason Smith not once. Obviously saffold had the harder matchup but still. I think Jason Smith is a natural left being forced to learn right and thats fine its just going to take some time for him to adapt properly

by zaviex on Jan 24, 2011 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

Correct (zaviex)

Jason Smith is a decent Offensive Right Tackle. And with all the intangibles involved, Stafford being the main one), along with being able to use him on the Right side, we are getting production from our 2nd over all pick.
“Bust” is a word that gets thrown around all to often. So as long as we’re nitpicking about terminology, I’ll have to agree with you andyhawk, he is not a total bust. Just a mere disappointment. And that only stems from where he was picked and what he was picked for.
For the record I believe both Safford and Smith will be staple bookends for us for a long time.

by ZamRam on Jan 24, 2011 11:45 AM CST up reply actions

I'm just trying to figure out Ramchops reasoning for possibly preferring Raji over Smith based on the GB/CHI game

I’ll admit I didn’t pay attention to him too much during the game, but as far as the box score goes (really all I’ve got to go on) he has an easy pick (for anyone not named Bartell) and a single tackle to his credit.

by TheBirds on Jan 24, 2011 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe he's trying to put some emphasis on the fact that getting a DT has become extremely difficult.

It’s rather funny yet a little sad as to how thing work out for the Rams. Trying so many times during that past few Drafts to address the DT issue only to come up with, (and andyhawk, I think you’ll agree), busts. While still in need, in 2009, it came to the point where our greater need becomes Left Tackle.
Raji or Smith…hmmm. Hindsight being foresight I would have taken Raji. Because as it turns out, come 2010, we’re still in need of a DT and a LT. Yet our greatest need is a Quarterback. Here is where Rams irony comes in to rear its ugly head. Probably,(or arguably), one of the best DT (Suh) comes along and we have to pass. But, give Devaney some credit. He come thru with a great QB and a pretty decent LT.
Yet, still no Defensive Tackle. At least not the 300+ pound, run stuffing, havoc raising one that we’d like.

by ZamRam on Jan 25, 2011 8:33 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, having Bradford AND Suh would have been SWEET

if only one would have come out a year earlier.

I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.

by Midasknight on Jan 25, 2011 12:50 PM CST up reply actions

Pickett was decent.

The rest were definitely busts.

by andyhawk on Jan 25, 2011 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

Bird, didja ever look at the stats this past season and see how many tackles per game Chris Long got? Typically one and sometimes two.

Still, most TST fans are crazy about Long. They chalk his lack of stats up to him being double-teamed. Out of our front four, Long is the only one that ever merits a double-team. Maybe Raji is getting alot of attention by other teams too? I am just NOT ready to agree that Jason Smith deserved to be the 2nd overall pick in the 2009 draft. Our 2nd rounder, JL, has always been much more valuable than the $33M Smith. I think Sam and JL may get Pro Bowl nods during their careers. Don’t see that happening for Smith or Long.

by RamChop on Jan 29, 2011 7:46 PM CST up reply actions

This was a good Post.

IMO, #15 might be rectified if our brain trusts would concentrate on getting SJax a comparable running mate.
It would take some of the pressure off and might prolong his career.
This years Draft, (being what it is), with us picking at #14, Ingram might be the smartest pick. If he’s still there.
