Give respect when it's due- Brandon Gibson's 2010 season
In 2009, we all saw the talent. After the trade brought him over, it took him awhile to figure out how to actually run routes and catch balls, but in 2010 he got there.
I don't understand how people can actually say he doesn't deserve to be part of the 5-6 WR group for years to come. He has good size, improving hands and has decent speed. The thing I love most about the guy is that he is a competitor. After his first few games where he dropped a couple of passes, he came back and made SURE he did not drop a ball. After the Niner game when he decided to try and make more out of something that wasn't there and not fall down for a couple of first downs, the next game all he did was fall forward and make sure he got the first down. He shows great emotion, and is ready to play every down.

That is for 14 games. If he had played the first two games, he would have easily been over 700 yards. He averaged over a first down per catch, and was really the only receiver to have YAC. Personally, I felt that he was the only receiver that could actually "get open". For as frustrating as it was to watch the offense this year, most of his plays he was not around any defenders and made some big gains.
Here is a video in 2009 where he made an absolute monster catch in his rookie season against the Cardinals.

I guess what I am getting at, is after a year of dismal play by our WR's the only ones that I can really say will be on the roster next year are Gibson, Amendola and Alexander, and honestly I believe they will be the core of our WR corps for awhile. IF we can add a true #1 receiver and keep one out of the Avery, Clayton, Gilyard and co. then I feel that WR goes from a huge weakness to a strength and with good depth.
I know Gibson can be inconsistent, but he just finished his 2nd full year and he was a 6th round pick out of Washington State. I feel like we just are so desperate to get good talent that we pick apart every player that isn't a superstar and a bunch of players don't deserve it.
Gibson is what he is; a WR that is going to give you energy, size and get open and make plays. He isn't going to be your deep threat or your slot guy but he is a guy that will come in and spark your team with a catch and some YAC. I will take him everyday as an emerging young WR that will fit perfectly as our 3-5 WR on the depth chart.

I hate to admit it, but last year I was impressed
he was one of those guys who constantly went 100% every play and tried to get every yard in a 1-15 season knowing full well that even if he got in the red zone it would end in a turnover or a field goal. Now that I’ve settled down and the loss at Seattle is history, I think he deserves another year.

I love this post
This is spot on. I thought Gibson did a great job this season and has a ton of potential, and given a healthy Avery and a number 1 wide receiver, Gibson is a damn good 4th or 5th wideout. Honestly, every player drops passes. It is part of the game and he only is in his second year.
I agree as well.
He’s not a star, but he’s pretty solid. He’s certainly earned the benefit of the doubt.
I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.
He's not better than whoever our new #1 WR will be. Nor is he likely better than Clayton, Amendola, Avery or DX.
He might squeak by if/when Robinson and/or Gilyard are cut.
He's better than Clayton and Avery by default
Clayton is a FA and Avery can’t stay healthy.
Sam Bradford
I think he'd be a good #4
not someone who’s in all the time, but someone who can come off the bench and move the chains.
Not that they use 4 WR’s all the time anyway…well, let’s see who the OC is..
Number 8 is great
thank you so much for this post
i think you touched on the main sign of him having a role being his willingness to improve and learn. he shows great spirit, commits his body to catches, has shown some excellent hands at times (after that helmet hit vs seattle for 1st down etc.)
he makes a very exciting #2 and I think next year he will prove a lot of people wrong.
the only receiver who proved this year that they just can’t hack it was Robinson, which is a shame, but that injury last year messed him up and he’s gotta go. I wish him luck elsewhere (just not in NFC West)
Gilyard needs to improve a hell of a lot more. like ridiculous amounts, but thank god he’s still Practice Squad eligible.
Bradford to Onobun!
I do give him props
but he’s not a “#1” if you will.
I believe if we get a solid WR, it will take pressure off the 3 DA’s and Gibson
Needed: Ping Pong table. Anyone wanna donate $78 million?
no one asks him to be a #1 tho, so I think he is a good and developing player for the role he is in
he’s definitely not a guy we should consider cutting.
Bradford to Onobun!
He's a frustrating player to watch though
we all see the talent, but sometimes he makes plays that make you think “WTF”. He doesn’t use his size to his advantage nearly enough.
"If he played the first two games"
He may have had 700 yards! Wow! He was targeted more than anyone besides Amendola and only comes out of the season with 620 yards and 2 TD’s? The entire reason we couldn’t throw the ball more than 6 yards this year was because he and Lauren couldn’t get open downfield. Everyone was blaming Shurmer and I kept on saying “you can only do what your players will allow you to do”. Hey look Shurmer is a head coach! Haha! The true fact of the matter is that he is not good nor is Lauren. I would certainly keep him on the roster over Robinson and Gilyard but that is exactly what he has shown. He is better than nothing.
Ignorance is bliss and way too many people are happy.
