Bradford to Bajema "Breakdown" WK 4: The Catch 2?
How are you Rams nation? I thought this week I would take a look at the play that I feel, sealed the deal for Sam Bradford, as far as winning the starting job for week one. Granted, even if we got a FG etc, I believe Sam still would have been starting just from his sheer performance on that drive and weeks past.
This play looked surprisingly similar to the one the 49ers ran in the 1982 NFC championship game between the Cowboys and niners deemed "The Catch". Montana to Clark - that pass was deemed the end of the Cowboys dynasty, and the beginning of the 49er dynasty.
Did this catch mark a turning point for Rams football? OK so it was preseason.. I can still have some fun with the thought though right?
Enjoy the Breakdown.

I don't know...
just kinda looked like you were admiring a couple of 49ers.

great breakdown, pete.
is it just me, or in watching the slo-mo, does it look like he could have thrown it A LOT sooner, instead of bothering with the roll out?
bajema released early and looked ready for the quick strike.
block! building kick! exploooooooosion!
Yes I did notice that
But remember, it was designed as a corner route and a rollout so both Bradford and Bajema needed to be on the same page.. it depended on the clear out, however the clear out happened really fast… but yea, it could have worked without a rollout.. performed beautifully!

I think the immediate recognition
of the open man will come with experience and more of a rapport w/ the receiving corps.
and, indeed- t’was a helluva throw.

agree 100%
I look at it as a trust issue with eachother. They aren’t that familiar with eachother yet and so they play the play exactly as designed until they build up a knowledge of eachother.
OLine
Did anyone watch the domination that was our OLine on that play. DAMN!
+1
I used to upload the NCAA Football '09 and '10 rosters into Madden and always drafted Sam Bradford onto the Rams in Franchise Mode...I liked him before he was cool =)
Another great breakdown VT.
Keep up the good work.
PS-this was better execution than the catch which was more improv than design.
SMITH FTW!

I couldn't watch the game
so a “2 yard pass to Bajema” on the box score didn’t seem so impressive. When I saw it on ESPN, I though to myself “holy shit, that was one pro throw.”

seriously VT you are gonna have to stop doing these or I am gonna become addicted
As someone who never played football, these are just soooo interesting to me. I have always loved football but I have never understood how much goes into each play. Great Job!!!
Ha Ha thanks for the kind words :-)
Expect PLENTY more ;-)

not that you have endless amounts of time but,
you could show some negative plays as well. That way we can see why things dont work as they should. But once again, spot on with the analysis. Bradford throws really well on the move and our line puts together a really good rolling pocket.
If you love something, set it free. If it doesn't come back, find it and kill it.
Bad play with Bradford?
Not last week. Ha!
Seriously tho Pete, good job.
Thanks guys...
Duely noted.. :-)

One question
Is the home opener going to be blacked out or not???
GO RAMS!!!
I heard it may be a sellout but not sure

can't remember the exact wording
but in the St Louis PB it said something about a sellout…. basically it sounded like they were about 90% sure it was going to be a sellout
yea I prob read same thing you did

sorry.... i am a big Devaney fan actually
but this one pretty much pisses me off. We have first rights on waivers…. and this… this is the best RB option we can do…. blaaaaahhhh
It's like we have themes in players.
This week its Oklahoma and Raven players. The last couple years it was Eagles and Giants. We also had a little Panthers phase as well.
Shurmur, your career is in 3rd and long. Don't run a draw.
Onobun > Gates
Don't Forget
All 3 starting linebackers are from Ohio State, and when we had Carpenter that made 4.
This is an Ultimate Team
and we need team chemistry.

This still doesn't say everything is settled.
They could still trade for or pick up a solid guy and turn loose one of the PS guys. Maybe this is it, but maybe it’s a strategic move to let another team know they are asking too much for their guy and we don’t need him at that price. I know I’m reaching, but this doesn’t necessarily say they are done making moves.
yes you are right.. dowsn't mean anything really.
A lot can still happen

I'm into it
But more so than anything, this just reassures me of how amazing Bradford is. What a perfect pass under pressure.
Bad news gentleman...
http://www.stltoday.com/sports/football/professional/article_da569539-2655-590f-bc39-d60fbcaca26d.html Looks like the game may be blacked out- I live in florida but you guys have no excuse! BUY TICKETS!!!
I would guess
the sellout will magically appear on Thursday. The local station scheduled to televise the game will guarantee the sale of the remaining tickets.
Can we give Shurmur some love?
I mean, I know it’s preseason against a second-string D, but we ripped him after the Browns game that pretty much commanded running the ball and short passing patterns because of the rain. The playcalling against NE and Baltimore looked great for the most part, and it’s obvious the guy is smart with play designs like the one VT just broke down.
Just saying, gotta keep it consistent. Go Rams!

i completely agree
I have a feeling it has alot to do with Bradford, but something is looking alot better about the offensive play calling. They are mixing it up and causing some havoc with their plays. Gotta give Shurmur love when it’s due
Nice work!
In super slo-mo, I was also wondering why the pass didn’t go out earlier, but it was nice to see the play develop and Bradford’s recognition of the wide open spot in the endzone.
I don’t see this play as proof of Bradford’s god-like prowess by any stretch, but it’s nice to see the kid stay relaxed, read the field, and make for an easy pitch-and-catch.
Thanks again for the breakdown!! I definitely look forward to it every week.
now i'm not sure
but if Bradford would have thrown it to bajema earlier, as soon as he had gotten free in the endzone, and that wasn’t were the play was designed to throw the ball, wouln’t it have been alot more possible for bajema to drop the pass etc because he wasn’t expecting it?
dude...
that was awesome! thanks for sharing. looking forward to more breakdowns.
Something for future breakdowns
I enjoy your breakdowns, but please don’t name players if you aren’t sure if it is them. You did it in one previous one and in this one you pointed out a Seattle safety as Ken Hamlin when he has not played for the Seahawks for 3 years and is currently with Baltimore.
WOW SORRY
WOW. I am retarded sry about that post. You are correct in your breakdown. If I could delete that post I would….I don’t know why I thought that was the seahawks. Sorry.
hey no problem.
Yea I know.. I do try to do my best to identify players properly, I apologize if I screwed one up previously. I do what I can with the limited time I have, and a 4 year old running around :-)
"The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall." - Vince Lombardi
Great job!
It’s amazing to see all the subtleties that go in to a play and the quick improvisations by players to make them work. The reason why Sam could not have completed the pass earlier is that Bajema didn’t start to turn and look for the ball until the 1:30 mark on your playback. I noticed that even after duping the MLB and Bajema being open, it took Sam moving quite a bit to his right to create the nice throwing lane he had.
It seems to me that the play-action wasn’t as convincing as it could have been, although it was good enough.
