Rams acquire WR Mark Clayton from Baltimore

Less than 48 hours after trimming their roster to 53 player, and just over a week since losing Donnie Avery to injury, the St. Louis Rams have acquired WR Mark Clayton from the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for "late round" considerations.

Clayton, a former first round pick, became expendable after the Raven signed T.J. Housmanzadah, who was released by the Seahawks this weekend. He never put up big numbers in Baltimore, but the Ravens have never really been much of a passing team...until this year. Clayton has to be relishing the opportunity he has in St. Louis, where he could start with Laurent Robinson and Danny Amendola.

The Rams have an open spot on their practice squad following yesterday's cut, so a player currently on the roster will most likely be moved over there.

Pretty happy at this price for this kind of skillset

Late round pick sounds about right. Clayton is far removed from his 1st rounder potential, but I am very happy they didn’t give up a 2nd rounder for Vince Jackson.

5’10", 190, 28 y/o, entering his 6th season.

Love

this move.. basically getting him for nothing and will probably be what.. our number 1? not bad just gives sam another target

by ramsaj28 on Sep 6, 2010 2:40 PM CDT reply actions

I love this pick up

Didn’t give up much and he’s been pretty solid considering he’s played in a run friendly offense the last 5 years.

I’d rather have a bigger WR though. 5’10 is as big as the Rams go unless you’re name is Drew Bennett.

I would still go after Jackson though. I might even be willing to give them a second round pick.

A WR core of Jackson, Clayton, Robinson, Amendola, Gilyard and maybe Avery next year . . . we’d be set at that position. And Sam would be a really happy guy

Excited because i met mark clayton

i have a football signed by him hes not that fast but hes talented and gets deep well

by zaviex on Sep 6, 2010 3:14 PM CDT reply actions

How does this affect the WR spots?

Robinson #1 & Clayton #2? I’d assume it would be like that seeing Robinson has the size advantage

Winners train. Losers complain.

by Redbirds_n_Horns on Sep 6, 2010 3:14 PM CDT reply actions

Amendola can move to the slot.

Robinson and Clayton are probably interchangeable at 1 and 2.

by Carneros on Sep 6, 2010 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Not at all. I fully expect Clayton to be your guys’ #1. If you have watched us at all this off-season you would have noticed that Clayton is an athletic WR. He’s fast, and can make acrobatic leaps. His only downfall is that he has inconsistant hands and that is really a weakness in pressure situations,

by Zachary Beard on Sep 6, 2010 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

nice to have your input since you have watched him

what do you think other that his hands do you think being on a run heavy offense lowered his yardage and do you think he has #1 ability? What are his strengths weaknesses?

by stlfan2004 on Sep 6, 2010 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he does have #1 ability, I honestly do. He just needs to work on his consistancy

I don’t think it was because he was on a run heavy offense that lowered his yardage, I think it was due simply to the fact the Joe Flacco trusted Derrick mason more, ergo throwing to him more. I think he will prosper in St. Louis because he will be able to establish a chemistry with Sam early on, and therefore establish himself as a #1 WR. I really hope he does well with you guys.
Strength:
-Speed
-Athletic
-Can make outstanding jumping catches

Weakness:

-Inconsistent hands
-A little shorter than what a starting WR should be
-Needs to put on a little bit of weight. If a WR is under 200 pounds they WILL get hurt.

by Zachary Beard on Sep 6, 2010 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

i have obviously never played football

so i don’t know but couldn’t you just run drill and drill with a guy like this (say maybe with running a lap for every dropped pass) and work the hand consistency out?

by stlfan2004 on Sep 6, 2010 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Good Hands are natural, you really can’t get better. But he has good hands, he just needs to focus more. A lot of his drops come from looking away from the ball before he catches it.

He was the Ravens' only deep threat before this year

This is the perfect post-Avery-injury move, both in player quality and cost. It makes my holiday, and helps eliminate the 8 men in the box the Rams were surely going to face before … that, and the TE position emerging as a weapon.

He doesn't have the greatest hands,

but he can get deep and stretch the field. As long as the defense has to account for him, that’s one less defensive guy clogging up the runs and short routes.

Adam Schefter is reporting that we sent 6th and 7th round picks to the Ravens for Clayton.

Given how rarely impact talent comes out of those draft slots, its a solid deal.

by ViperLjs on Sep 6, 2010 4:00 PM CDT reply actions

I wouldn’t under-estimate Ozzies ability to identify talent in the lower rounds. Case and point, Adalius Thomas, Sam Koch, Jared Gaither, Leron McClain, etc…….

by Zachary Beard on Sep 6, 2010 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions

we also got selvie and hull and vobora in 7th

don’t underestimate the talent in late rounds, often its high talent low character guys that rip it up or guys that are projects or work ethic dudes.

i think giving 2 picks is quite steep for clayton, but if we got a single pick back itd be a much better deal.

regardless, talent is talent and i’ve always like mark clayton as a wideout.

by Zachary Beard on Sep 6, 2010 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Only Adailus Thomas was a 6th rounder.

Gaither was a 5th in the supplemental, and McClain was a 4th. Koch was a 6th but he’s a punter and round 6 is like round 1 for punters.

But I agree those picks are still valuable.

CORRECTION

The wording was ambiguous and I got it wrong. We sent a 6th to Baltimore for Clayton and received their 7th round pick, not the other way around. Makes this an even better deal from my perspective.

Update from ESPN
Update: The Ravens have confirmed the trade, revealing they will receive an “undisclosed” draft choice as compensation. ESPN’s Adam Schefter says the Rams sent a sixth-round choice to the Ravens for Clayton and a seventh-round choice.

exactly

Same skill sets that we have like 10 of. I don’t think he matches averys speed at all. Probably slower than Robinson. Lr11 is gonna emerge as our deep threat this year.

the catch about 2 minutes in is absolutely beautiful

he was covered and smothered and was able to reach out one handed and still get the job done

by stlfan2004 on Sep 6, 2010 4:45 PM CDT reply actions

yeah he plays bigger than he is

makes spectacular grabs, drops some easy ones, like braylon but smaller, not as fast but more elusive with yac

i think he fits our system nicely and will relish his opportunity here.

my question is, who do we cut for him? Fells?

by MathB on Sep 6, 2010 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions

i already commented this on another post but

I say burton…. curry is too valuable of a blocker and special teams player plus he still has upside potential where burton is just a wr and has already shown us what he’s got

Football Guys

likes the move. Said that Clayton was having a really nice preseason but there was just no room in Baltimore anymore.

by blindmouse on Sep 6, 2010 4:55 PM CDT reply actions

I love it

He is a similar skill set to what we have but…. hes a veteran! And he stays healthy! AND we got him for nothing! Absolutley birlliant move, we literally gave up nothing and hes an upgrade, even if not a huge upgrade. These little type of moves mark a good FO. Go BD!

by stuman89 on Sep 6, 2010 5:11 PM CDT reply actions

He's not Vincent Jackson but I like it

We get Clayton and a seventh for our sixth. That’s a great deal. He’s a solid receiver, nothing special but he is a veteran in his prime with decent speed(4.45 out of college) and knows how to run precise routes. Bradford needs guys to be where they are supposed to be on routes and he fills that need. I think I have seen enough of Devaney’s moves to say he really knows what he’s doing(except for that stupid Barron trade).

any1 know

when he will be playing..love to see him this week nut highly doubt it

by ramsaj28 on Sep 6, 2010 6:27 PM CDT reply actions

Good move

I like the trade because Clayton brings a veteran role to the wr position. I also like the trade because he has similar skills to avery and we got him for a low round draft pick. Smart move Billy.

Congrats Rams Fans!

Despite Mark not living up to 1st round style points, you will not find a more humble and hard worker. He will help to develop the younger guys while setting a good locker room example. Great pick up. This man hustles at every snap. As a Ravens fan I will miss seeing him in purple and black!

by wootravens on Sep 6, 2010 7:43 PM CDT reply actions

No worries...

I called my wife to tell her the news when it hit the radio and she said… well I can’t repeat it here haha. Needless to say he will be missed but Bradford will be all the better for Mark’s presence, if not simply for his veteran experience.

by wootravens on Sep 6, 2010 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Gotta be Burton that goes ...

… I was surprised we kept him two days ago.

Curry looks promising … and at the very least, is already a good special teams player.

I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.

by Midasknight on Sep 6, 2010 10:37 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed. Curry made tackle after tackle on special teams.

He also made the block that sprung McCrea for the TD late against Baltimore.

by andyhawk on Sep 6, 2010 11:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Bravo...

way to land a good reciever. I have nothing but good things to say about Clayton. I always felt like clayton was underrated because in our offense Mason was targeted alot but when Clayton did get hius chance he showed flashes of that first round talent we saw a couple of years ago. I think all clayton needs is a chance to be targeted thats all. Great pick up!

I absolutely love this pick up. I have a really good feeling about this guy. I am predicting close to 1,000 yards and at least 5 TDs. Mark my words!

This is good for the rams they really needed a veteran presence, I wonder if Sam Bradford had anything to do with this.

Ravens fan here

Im really sad to see Clayton leave. He hasnt lived up to his first round billing but hes still a good receiver. He sometimes shows flashes of greatness. He has a great personality as well. He can dominate bad teams but disappears in big games. I really wish him good luck in St Louis.
