Rams Acquire Mark Clayton

Rams acquire former first round pick Mark Clayton for "late round considerations."  Clayton is a guy I like.  He's not a big guy, (5'10'' 195 lbs) but he is an experienced veteran that can get open.  I like this better than Housh, which ironically is how we got him.  The Ravens had acquired Anquan Boldin, TJ Houshmanzadeh, and Donte Stallworth, making the need for Clayton very small.  We picked him up for cheap and now we have our experienced WR.  I like the move.  I think he will help our young WRs blossom, and I think he will help Bradford.   No word on the corresponding move.  I can only assume Curry is gone.

[Update]: Rams will get Mark Clayton and a future undisclosed pick and the Rams give up a future undisclosed pick.

I think this gives us our "speed/strech" receiver, wonder who we cut.

Now get b/u RB (Julius Jones?) and some “skilled” depth for our O-Line.

by RBramfan on Sep 6, 2010 2:18 PM CDT reply actions

Forget J. Jones.

He re-signed with Seahawks. Apparently wasn’t really “cut”.

Still need b/u RB.
Trade for Choice?
Pickup Betts, Parker, Blount, etc.

Anybody know of anyone else on the “radar”?

by RBramfan on Sep 6, 2010 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Not Choice IMO

dont like ginving up picks right now for a b/u RB – especially what Dallas may be asking for him. Much rather have Betts for free (as far as picks go)

I should be working right now...

by gorams77 on Sep 6, 2010 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

good point

although choice is a nice back i wouldnt give more than a 6th for him, as in reality we could draft a younger maybe faster guy in round 4 in the draft with more upside

Bradford to Onobun!

by Infemous on Sep 6, 2010 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

solid move

i bet we keep curry and cut burton though…curry is great at blocking and special teams and his hands were coming along nicely

by stlfan2004 on Sep 6, 2010 2:20 PM CDT reply actions

Thats what I'd do

I just think Currys potential hasn’t been tapped yet while we’ve seen what Burton has already.

by dbcouver on Sep 6, 2010 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

exactly....now that we've got all the role players slot, burner etc

I would be looking for versatility and upside potential for the rest

Burton seems like the one to go

Just doesnt have much to offer at this point

Curry's blocking is excellent

And Spags mentioned that Sunday, that he wants a more physical set of receivers.

idk

hes always been decent but never a stand out and hes def not a number one guy. Im not that angry its always nice to have a pool of talent and especially at a low price such as that. we’ll see what happens.

Would've liked to see a WR with size,

but experience is something we needed as well

by DCRamFan on Sep 6, 2010 2:31 PM CDT reply actions

Love the idea of stashing him on the PS

He’ll get a chance to learn the offense and get in playing shape. I’d say by the middle of the season he should be in good enough form to push the other backup WR’s on the 53 roster.

seriously

I gotta say….. WR’s are important and I get that but this is the first year I can ever remember since being a rams fan where i am really excited to watch the TE’s I really think when our offense skyrockets in production ( and i think it will this year) the TE’s will be the top reason (Not excluding King Sam of course)

is because defenses werent respecting him and covering him too tightly

like the addition, but...

would have rolled the dice on picking him up on waivers if he was cut instead of trading a pick.

Ladell Betts

My first post, so hopefully not too much hazing :) I watched a bit of the Saints last pre-season game yesterday, and was not overly impressed with him. What are the chances, you think, of the Rams giving him a look? I know that in terms of experienced RB options, there is Betts, Willie Parker, and possibly Julius Jones (rumor has it). However, I really like the idea of Tashard Choice if we can land him. He is very impressive, and would cost probably a 4th or 5th round pick I would imagine.

by RamBuck on Sep 6, 2010 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Tashard choice is the best of theose options

but will cost us the most.. I think worth a 4th.

Yup on Choice, No on Slow Willie

Forgot about Choice, love him as backup, and I’m sure he’d be motivated after lingering on the bottom rung in Dallas for 2 years.

Another + 1 for Clayton

Still not sold on Blount as our back up RB, if he couldn’t make it on Tenn, I STL is the team for him. I like his fighting spirit ( followed him closely as I’m from Oregon) and it looked like he had grown up by the time the Rose Bowl came around. But punching a teammate when you are an undrafted rookie in camp trying for a spot doesn’t smack of the maturity level Spags expects on t his team.
Not loving J Jones, but would be fine with him as a stop gap back up.
Why is it so hard to find a hungry young Running Back who is willing to run hard for the chance to understudy for S JAx?!?! It’s bizarre, you’d think rookie RB’s would be chomping at the bit and willing to do whatever it takes for the #2 spot here.

by Jmkramer on Sep 6, 2010 2:59 PM CDT reply actions

Pray we don't get Willie

On another post this morning I spoke about Betts and Parker. Living in DC, and having no choice but to watch the skins week in and week out, I will say that Ladell Betts was a solid fill-in for Clinton Portis last season, and a lot of fans thought he should have taken over the #1 spot (as most are disgusted with CP). I like Betts…he can block, and he can catch out of the backfield. Willie Parker is terrible. He’s slow as hell. I have nothing more to say about him. I think I’ve pissed about 10 people off talking about Legarrette Blount today, but I think he’s got tremendous upside. I’ll leave it at that

by DCRamFan on Sep 6, 2010 3:02 PM CDT reply actions

+1

Yeah, I wouldn’t feel good about Willie. As I mentioned, I wasn’t overly impressed with Betts but perhaps since he was working with the third string he didn’t exactly have anything more than warm bodies blocking for him. However, his receiving out of the backfield is excellent (required for a West Coast Offense). It’s also true that his mileage is low, as well (even at 31). He only has 776 carries in his career, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Of more note is that he has 165 receptions for 1505 yards (9.1 yard average, very good for a RB). Maybe I could get on Team Betts if he is available, and we aren’t giving up any picks.

by RamBuck on Sep 6, 2010 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Schefter says its a draft pick switch

So probably the same terms as the Laurent Robinson deal. I’d guess 5th rounders, maybe even 6th. I would be curious to see what happens if we finish with a better record. Would we still switch picks?

Shurmur, your career is in 3rd and long. Don't run a draw.
Onobun > Gates

by Carneros on Sep 6, 2010 3:03 PM CDT reply actions

Clayton can at least stretch the field

I noticed that while he wasn’t that busy in 2009 (Ray Rice = took over offense), he averaged 17 yards per reception in 2008 (Flacco’s first year).

by RamBuck on Sep 6, 2010 3:19 PM CDT reply actions

That was also the 2nd most productive year of his career,

in which he caught 41 balls for less than 700 yards. It’s kind of gone downhill from there. I still think he’s got what it takes to be a great reciever, but Baltimore has been a run first team for several years now, and Derrick Mason has always been there #1.

by DCRamFan on Sep 6, 2010 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah id say 6th or 7th

by gomer7 on Sep 6, 2010 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I have always like Clayton

even when he was in College this is a good pick up for the Rams I just dont understand how you would have to trade for Betts when you could get a younger , Faster, Stronger and Cheaper with a bettter upside and you wouldnt wont him because he punched I guy this is Football how many off the old school players you think every punched I guy in there football career. John Cable brooke a guys jaw and he doesnt have this hanging over his head what about Bubby Ryan!!!

by Ramsfan201 on Sep 6, 2010 3:31 PM CDT reply actions

Blount punches a guy in college

and loses most of his senior year. Then he doesn’t get drafted by anyone in spite of his talent. Someone finally picks him up as a free agent and no doubt has a talk with him about controlling himself on the field. So what does he do? He punches a teammate in practice. This guy clearly has big problems controlling his temper.

You have to recognize we went through this with Incognito. No matter how many times the coaches talked to him and warned him, no matter how many times he got benched, he still couldn’t control his temper and kept getting stupid 15 yard penalties. I don’t think there is much doubt Blount will be the same way. When guys are like this the opponents try to get under their skin and drive them crazy so they will get penalized. It usually works.

No matter how talented Blount might be, he is a penalty waiting to happen. He punched an opponent in college and went absolutely crazy. He punched a teammate in practice after being warned to behave himself. He will do it again if anyone picks him up. You don’t see any rush of teams trying to get him in spite of his talent, do you? There’s a reason why.

by andyhawk on Sep 6, 2010 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Thats because the majority of the Teams are set at RB

most teams now have 2 good RB’s some Teams have 3 where the only the team that really needs a back up ! Maybe Denver!!

true dat

But they were filled out in other positions. Its hard to concentrate on backup running back when you already ahave steven jackson and need to fill so many other holes. I wouldnt say most teams have 2 “good” rbs. I would say most teams have adequate rbs. While we have 1 excellent rb and garbage behind it.

well said!

everyone is saying we need a RB 2 which in some aspects is true, but i think there are other options we need more. a solid rb2 would be nice but jackson can handle it for a couple more seasons eating up 90% of the reps. a RB2 is something we need, but it shouldnt be our top priority

And the future...begins now. I believe in Sam Brad

I'll have to disagree...

“I am not disappointed whatsoever,‘’ Fisher told the newspaper. "His past is his past. Is that the first punch you’ve seen at camp this year? No. OK. I am not disappointed whatsoever. I have great confidence in the young man that he has learned from his mistake and is very competitive.’’

Everyone talks about Blount like he’s our primary back, which he wouldnt be. I’ll say it again…tenacity mixed with 6 ft and 240 lbs spells trouble for opposing defenses. I like him coupled with SJ

Update on Trade per ESPN
Update: The Ravens have confirmed the trade, revealing they will receive an “undisclosed” draft choice as compensation. ESPN’s Adam Schefter says the Rams sent a sixth-round choice to the Ravens for Clayton and a seventh-round choice.

by RBramfan on Sep 6, 2010 4:14 PM CDT reply actions

I think you guys are really overrating LeGarette Blount,

He almost lost out to Samkon Gado and still has a lot to learn. He probably won’t contribute that much this year

We'll see...

Look at the depth of RB for the Bucs. Outside of Cadillac, who is injury prone, they have no one. I hope you’re right though, because I think he would’ve been an excellent backup to SJ

by DCRamFan on Sep 6, 2010 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions

150 carries in a shared role = very limited exp.

Blount wasn’t recruited much out of high school and had to play at a small Mississippi junior college to try to get Oregon’s attention. In his 2 seasons on the Oregon team, one was wiped out for the punching incident and the other was in a shared RB role and was marked by a short suspension for skipping workouts and “failure to fulfill team obligations.” So when you really look at his development, he hasn’t shown much at all. That doesn’t mean there isn’t much there, just that he hasn’t shown much.

The job isn’t simply lining up and smashing through a hole in the O-line. As we’ve seen year in and year out, especially in the preseasons, the QB’s life is in his hands on every blitz pick up and that seems to be where the young RB’s (of all draft positions) seem to have the hardest time getting up to speed. I’d be very surprised if Blount did anything meaningful for at least 2 years. I know that sounds very pessimistic but he wasn’t drafted for reasons that go way beyond that punch thing: he really has a ton to learn.

I hope the Rams can get a change of pace guy that will screw with the Defense’s heads. Someone who will throw them off their rhythm. I would have loved Darren Sproles when we thought he was going to be available a few months ago because he would not only be a change of pace but could also start when needed. I’m afraid hoping for a starter quality guy off waivers — for the RB position — is not realistic. But hell, I’m a fan so I hope anyway.

For Clayton, the price they paid is very low (simply moving down in the draft from round 6 to round 7, right?) for a guy who will instantly bring more experience than anyone at his position on the roster, and is used to going to the playoffs.
