Rams begin filling out their practice squad

The St. Louis Rams have started filling out their practice squad today.

The first addition is WR Danario Alexander, who the Rams signed in the middle of the training camp. This makes sense for both parties. Alexander needs time to get back to playing shape and learn the offense. Keep an eye on the former Tiger in practice this year, injuries could easily force the Rams to promote him before the season is out, but next August will be a more realistic start time for his NFL career.

They also added LB Mortty Ivy to the practice squad. Ivy was cut by the Panthers yesterday, after spending the year before on their practice squad.

Former Rams CB Quincy Butler landed with the Browns

Nice to see Danario be the first addition.

I would like to see Roger Allen and Marquis Johnson get signed onto the squad as well.

I used to upload the NCAA Football '09 and '10 rosters into Madden and always drafted Sam Bradford onto the Rams in Franchise Mode...I liked him before he was cool =)

The V-Jax rumors from yesterday may have been very close to being true.

One NFL team had a one-year deal worked out with Jackson, and then the teams couldn’t agree on terms for a trade. So I’m thinking the Rams could’ve been the “one NFL team” and then said they were out when they couldn’t agree on trade terms. We may have been very close to getting Vincent Jackson. Link

Shurmur, your career is in 3rd and long. Don't run a draw.

I'm guessing it's more likely the Vikings. With Rice injured,

and the Vikes thinking Super Bowl with Favre’s last hurrah, they are the one team who would be willing to give up a high draft choice for a one year deal. Of course, it could also be the Pats, since they have so many high draft choices next year they could afford to give one up. I really doubt it was the Rams, although stranger things have happened.

Also, Center, Drew Miller, added to practice squad as well.

5 more practice squad spots remaining

From other teams I like

Stevie Brown of the Raiders, Donovan Warren of the Jets, and Brandon Carter and Brandon Sharpe of the Cowboys.

I am not sure why Marquis Johnson didn't make the 53 man roster

He looked pretty darned good.

I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.

Howard Balzer tweets:
Rams have added to the practice squad: WR Danario Alexander, WR Brandon McRae, C/G Drew Miller, T/G Ryan McKee, CB Marquis Johnson

That leaves 2 more PS spots I believe

I think you get 8 spots, so we can get three more guys.

I like having Alexander, McRae, and Johnson on there. I think these three guys could be really good, they are nice to have to so that maybe we can bring them up late in the season to fill in for injured players.

by StopSpe on Sep 5, 2010 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

That list doesn't have the LB from the Panthers though

So 5 on that list, and Mortty Ivy makes 6.
I’m thinking we keep one spot open for a RB, whether its Toston, Ogbonnaya, Dennis Morris or an outside RB. We could also still add Keith Null to the PS.

Carpenter isn't eligible for the practice squad.

And I have no idea who Mortty Ivy is. He played for West Virginia and was undrafted in 2009. That’s all I know.

He is

He was only active for the last couple of weeks.

Take your pick from:
Torain

Mallett
Julius Jones
LaGarrette Blount
Joique Bell
And I’m probably missing a couple.

So would I....

As a back up to SJax – no doubt. he will be cheap and knows the position. He is no heir apparent to the throne, but that can come later in another draft or two.

We need someone competent when SJax is out of the game for 10+ plays a game and if (heaven forbid) we need for a whole game injury fill in. Jones fits the bill from my POV.

I should be working right now...

If we signed julius jones, i think i might stop watching rams football til he’s gone. i have no love for JJ.

wow...did he punch your sister or something?

I would prefer a guy with a little NFL experience without being an old retread, but at this point the list is filled with old guys and disappointments. Ideally I’d like to see someone who could be a short term starter if called upon, and if he had a style that was a change of pace from Jackson that’d be a plus.

no no no…. but he played for the god hated cowboys and the god awful seahawks… i always thought he was super overrated….lol

I really liked that Johnson kid

Watching him in the pre-season he was all over the place. I know Payne on the IR really shifted the secondary but i think Marquis could be a really nice player. as for a back up RB old and hurt(betts and Willie Parker) or never lived up to the hype (julius jones) or a non pillar kid (blount). Not alot of to choose from. That being said the Rams backups are about the worst in the league so what the hell do i know.

That leaves us with one more spot which a assume is reserved for Toston once we find a new backup RB.

Spags worst coach in the league?

according to this he is.

The best is Ken Whisenhunts glowing review by Matt Leinart.

QB Matt Leinart(notes): " Just looking back at my rookie year, what we were as a team until now — it’s night and day. That’s due a lot to his philosophy and the attitude and discipline he’s brought to us. He’s been extremely hard on me, but I think it’s helped me to be mentally tougher and I think all that will pay off for both of us."

And...
Rams, Raiders and Redskins were also interested in TJ.

I wish we would do more than just be interested every once in a while.

Out of V-Jax, TO, and Housh, I think Housh would’ve been the best (for ability and cost reasons). If Amendola is supposed to be playing #2 WR, it could allow him to move into the slot. And it didn’t even cost 1 million.

Regardless, I can’t wait for week 1.

If it's any consolation

I think we’ve been ‘interested’ in about every WR that’s been on the open market according to ‘sources.’ I think it’s ridiculous that sources are allowed to not identify themselves.

THIS year's the year. I hope....

I suspect a lot of the "sources" are the sports writer sitting at the next desk

to the guy that publishes the story. One of them says to the other “I’ll bet the Rams were interested in him”, so it gets published that “sources say…”. I never believe any of those stories because I think the vast majority are made up, not real.

I’m Perplexed as to why the Rams havent added a quality #2 RB off the waiver wire.

Devaney and Spaggs have a lot to answer for if Steven Jackson goes down to a season ending injury and then what,Darby or Toston.

by Thomas W on Sep 6, 2010 1:10 PM CDT reply actions

Agree with Thomas

We have 2 young RBs with not much upside behind Jackson. There are other options floating around out there right now. It makes sense to keep just one of Darby & Tolston then sign Julius Jones.

Hello everyone, Knoxfan jr here.

I’ve been a Cowboys fan for a few years, but since things are as they are, Grandpa would haunt me if I didn’t become a Rams fan. Guess I have a lot of catching up to do. TST is a really nice place to start. I don’t really have a sig, so I’ll just use the one he had.

Much better than giving up a 2nd rounder for Jackson

and yes I do understand that Jackson is the better player, but 2nd rounders turn into Laurinaitis’s and saffold’s…..have to keep those picks for now.

by CoachConnors on Sep 6, 2010 2:29 PM CDT reply actions

We might not have said that

with the old front office, but 2nd rounders do really count for something with the new FO. What a nice change that is!!!
