Rams Preview, Some Questions

Hey everyone, this is smileyman from over at Niners Nation. I'm doing a series of articles next week about the NFC West teams-basically a review of their pre-seasons, some players to keep an eye on and projected records. I watched all 4 of the Rams preseason games and have some initial thoughts--please tell me if I'm blowing smoke. Also if you have any other things to add please do so since you know your team better than I do.

Star-divide

Offense Review:

Sam Bradford started out a bit rough (it didn't help that he had no protection the first game and had to throw the ball away three or four times to avoid a sack), but by the third game against the Pats he was on fire. Extremely poised in the pocket, doing an excellent job of seeing the entire field and going through his checkdowns. He wasn't locking in on any one receiver.

His accuracy and touch have been talked about ad nauseum but I think one aspect of his QB skills that is overlooked is his strength. He fired some rockets out there that really surprised me.

I felt that your offense struggled in the redzone. Several times you were inside the 10 and had to settle for field goals. It's nice to drive the length of the field but it's disheartening to not finish it.

Jackson is a stud of course, but I think Bradford desperately needs a #1 WR. Avery was probably going to be that guy but he's out. Can Amendola step up into that role? The pass protection was rough at times, but it did improve significantly, especially in blitz pick ups (Ravens and Patriots were throwing blitzes at Bradford all day--none of which fazed him in the least).

I think you'll have a very exciting offense this year, and I think Sam Bradford's gonna be a star.

Defense Review:

I thought your defensive line has been vastly improved. Moving Chris Long to the left end spot was a great decision--he was making plays all over the field (I recall a particular play against the Browns where he chased down a receiver on the other side of the field). I thought Larry Grant also did a spectacular job--against the Browns he had one (or was it two?) forced fumbles on kick offs.

Your secondary seems weak to me though. The first game you were being eaten alive in pass coverage--both in the flats and the deep ball. By the third game the underneath stuff seemed to have gotten fixed (indicating to me that it was probably mostly mental stuff and not talent), but the deep stuff is a major concern. Lots of wide open receivers down the field.

I also noticed that the tackling was very sloppy throughout the pre-season. Lots of players who managed to brak away from the first tackler and gaining extra yards. Perhaps the most egregious example is James Laurinaitis grabbing Rob Gronkowski at about the six yard line and Gronkowski still managing to hop into the endzone. Definitely something that needs work on.

Your run defense is impressive and the pass rush has improved week to week (though it's still inconsistent).

Special Teams

Your return units are great. Gilyard and Amendola are both exciting returners. I thought your coverage units didn't do so well--mostly because of that sloppy tackling I mentioned earlier. Fix that and it'll be much better for you.

Schedule

Week 1 AZ @ Stl--I think the Rams can win this one. Still have momentum from the pre-season and the Cardinals are a team in turmoil riht now

Week 2 Rams @ Raiders--This is an interesting one. I think that the Raiders can bring the pressure--if your offensive line can handle it than this could be an exciting and close game. I think your offense is better than their offense, but overall their defense is better. I'll give it to them but narrowly

Week 3 Redskins @ Rams--I think that the Redskins offense will be too tough to stop. This is a Skins victory

Week 4 Seahawks @ Rams--I think you can win this one too. I don't think that the Seahawks have the offense to put up good numbers and I don't think that their secondary can stop Bradford (especially with them trading their best CB away).

Week 5 Rams @ Lions--This will be an interesting matchup. I love what the Lions did in the off-season and Stafford is the real deal. I think this will be a high scoring affair and the last team with the ball wins. Special teams may be the difference maker here and you have better ST than the Lions. Win for the Rams

Week 6 Chargers @ Rams--Chargers offense is too high-powered for the Rams secondary. Loss.

Week 7 Rams @ Bucs--I think that the Bucs offense isn't good enough to carry the day and their defense (especially secondary) won't stop the Rams. Win

Week 8 Panthers @ Rams--Panthers should win this one but I'm predicting upset for the Rams.

Week 9 Bye

Week 10 Rams @ 49ers--Sorry, I have to give this one to my team. You're playing at Candelstick, and we have an extremely tough defense and an offense that could be scary.

Week 11 Falcons @ Rams--Have to give this one to the Falcons with their high-powered passing offense.

Week 12 Rams @ Broncos--I'd love to say that you'll win, but it's at Denver. However I don't think Orton's the answer there at QB and I think their offense will struggle. It'll be a close game but the Broncos will win.

Week 13 Rams @ Cardinals--Cardinals win this one. By this point in the season I'm predicting Max Hall as the starter (I think he'll be better for the Cardinals than Derek Anderson). They're at home too, which will give them an added edge

Week 14 Rams @ Saints--Have to give this one to the Saints because of their passing offense. However they tend to play down to the level of their competition (Redskins and Bucs last year), so this one could be closer than people will think.

Week 15 49ers @ Rams--Calling this for my team again, though it won't be the smackdown that it was last year. Bradford's too smart to make the kind of mental errors that killed you then. Loss

Week 16 Rams @ Seahawks--Twice in a row? It's possible. Like I said I think the Seahawks secondary is very suspect as is their offense with no true #1 WR and aging QB who's a bit frail. Win

So that's a 6-10 record with the possibility of going as high as 8-8 if some of the close ones fall your way. What do you think? Am I way off the mark with this stuff?

Predictions

Are pretty close to on the money as far as the season. I’m trying to recall where we struggled in the red zone, but I think that was at the Cleveland game. According to the broadcasters, the weather was in monsoon like conditions (exaggeration probably).

Anyhow, in NE and at home against the Ravens, our OC really opened up the playbook and the Rams starting offense marched against these two teams. The only defenses that will put up a red zone fight against us would be Oakland and SF.

No, the weather during the Cleveland game was atrocious

really was monsoon-like out there. Lots of mishandled snaps, fumbles, etc. I noticed stalled drives there and also against the Pats.

i think your breakdown of win's losses is very accurate

I think 8-8 is a real possibility depending on injury and momentum. In your breakdown of our team you were dead on with ST If they don’t get there tackling in check it will be the death of us. However I think you are underestimating the secondary quite a bit. Our depth is not that great but the “improvement” you saw was also the difference between the first two games where all of our starters were injured and the last two where they were playing, even if just for a drive or two. Fletcher is super impressive and Bartell is solid as always. Atogwe has alot of INT potential but it didn’t come through last year which makes that a toss up. Our second stringers did do some improving from first to fourth game but I think staying healthy with our starters will be the deciding factor. Watch for Fletcher. He smothered Randy Moss out completely. If he can continue that into the season it will change our ability against deep passes greatly. I also think our pass rush may surprise you this year. Long is looking really impressive. If he breaks out this year, which has been my prediction, every one better watch out. He feeds off momentum. If he gets a sack or pressure early in the game he tends to just keep going. With the offense I am really hopeful. Bradford has been a adrenaline shot in the arm for the team and fanbase with his skills and character. Amendola is like a little energizer bunny but I worry if he can be a number two. That said, I saw him this week running as number two and not only did he get great seperation, he turned his body all the way around and made a very difficult catch all the while keeping it in bounds. The kid has the work ethic of a beast so he may rise to the occasion and surprise alot of people. You are right that we have a little redzone problem but give us credit. We haven’t been to the redzone all the much in recent years…lol… it will take some adjusting. Another thing to watch for is our playbook. Funny I know, but I am serious. One thing I have watched is that it is transforming to some odd new hybrid west coast scheme. It may have alot to do with Bradford and his natural tendencies but it is really meshing into a unique blend. If it keeps going it may confuse alot of defenses. All and all it was a very accurate assesment of our teams strengths and weaknesses. I do have to say I hope we at least beat you guys once but you do have a mean defense so that may be wishful thinking. Good job paying attention to the details. Us rams fans get really sick of outsiders just labeling us bad and moving along.

sidenote

one thing important you forgot to mention is our kicking. Josh Brown is an absolute stud and the difference maker for us in alot of games. He had a perfect preseason including a 54 yard field goal that was amazing

The offense progression from week 1 to week 4 was interesting

lots of different looks, more spread-like offenses. During the Cleveland game you ran several plays that involved a fake double reverse—one was a draw up the middle, a couple were designed as play action passes.

I love that play because it’s going to totally set up an opposing defense for the real deal late in the game.

I love Atogwe (lots of Niner fans wanted him on the team and thought it was a natural fit, especially with his connection to Singletary), but I still think your weak link is CB coverage. Now it is pre-season and the blown coverages might have simply been due to non-starters being in.

Our top 3 CBs were missing

the first two games. They were all out with injuries. Watch what they did against the Pats in the first half while they were in there. And that was their first game back and active.

I look forward to Crabtree burning Thomas in the pros twice a year

like he did in college

Really looking forward to the two Niners & Rams games

I honestly think the NFC West will come down to these two teams at the top of the division. Both of those games could be really interesting and very competitive barring any major injuries for either team throughout the course of the year.

Wow, pretty spot on with the analysis

impressive considering you aren’t a Ram’s fan.

I think the front end of the secondary is pretty good, but wasn’t showcased a lot. Bradley Fletcher had a fantastic camp and is a key piece on this team.

If Bradford, Jackson, the DBs, and O-line can avoid any major injury issues we can be a pretty damn good team this year, but that’s a lot of ifs so I’d say 6 wins is reasonable, if not optimistic.

I think if we can end the season without taking any steps backwards and have another good off-season we’ll be in business.

If you guys can get a true #1 WR this off-season

your offense can be scary good

by smileyman on Sep 5, 2010 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Nice piece...

it ALL depends on the KING. We’re all cautiously optimistic over here about SAM…if he’s great we could win the division (did I just say that?). But chances are that he won’t be great for a couple of years so you’re probably closer to the truth than I am. I also think we could start the season 5-0. Yikes, I’m delusional. Our glaring weakness is the lack of a #1 WR. On the other hand, KING SAM spreads the ball around so much that maybe we don’t need one…of couse we do and we’ll get our Crabtree in the draft next year with our #1 pick. Anyhow, it all depends on Bradford…he’s our savior…

Pass rush really needs improvement.

Pocket was rarely collapsed from the interior during the preseason, but george selvie looks promising

Sam the MAN!

Damn

I was going to do a preview, but I been too busy with college work and all these books :(, It was a pretty spot on though so kudos

Thats blasphemus

I think his predictions are pretty realistic but I hate 49ers and their fans, so out with him

by dbcouver on Sep 6, 2010 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

very impressed

with the assessment here, props duly given out to a fartyniner fan.

I think we will improve on tackling because last year we had like the least broken tackles on us and Spags will not allow the sort of poor tackling to continue.

I really like your season preview and think that it is pretty damn accurate should we stay healthy, as others have said.

health is the key here in STL and as we are thin in depth we really need the big guys to step up and stay fit.
if one of the key 5 (sam, SJ, Brown, Atogwe, JL) go down i see our season going down a fair bit.

best of luck on the season trouncing AZ and SEA but i would sure hope you lose to us TWICE :D

Bradford to Onobun!

by Infemous on Sep 6, 2010 9:48 AM CDT reply actions

I never thought I'd see it.

But it seems like I too found a 49er fan I can’t bring myself to despise. Pretty good post, really. This year, yea, I think the 9ers likely take the division, but I see the Rams finishing 3rd, ahead of the ’Hawks. I think we can beat the Cards at home, but they likely take the game in Glendale.

That said, the Rams season really does all depend on lack of injury. If Jackson, Laurinaitis, Bradford, Atogwe, Bartell, or any of the starting O-Line goes down, so does our season.

At least we have ridiculous depth at Tight End?
