Veteran RBs available right now!

We need to get after a couple of veteran back-up RBs that are available. Ladell Betts and Willie Parker.

Both of them have enuff left for a couple seasons with the Rams and keep S-Jax off the injured list for 4-6 games this year. If we get going we could shore up the inexperienced RBs and give Jackson some true rest throughout the year. We wouldn't be spending a lot to get them either. I'm sure they have a lot to prove to former teams.

Grab them both

put toston on practice squad

Yes I agree get both.

Ignorance is bliss and way too many people are happy.

Seems like you forgot Ryan Torain

Per fas et nefas - Latin translation="By Any Means Necessary"

by Habte E on Sep 4, 2010 6:29 PM CDT reply actions

interesting Torrain is cut

he should have lots of milage left, although he’s not a starting caliber guy

by CoachConnors on Sep 4, 2010 7:06 PM CDT up reply actions

why do we need another starting guy?

we wont sign torrain to be the starter, just someone to give sjax a break! he doesnt need to start for us.

And the future...begins now. I believe in Sam Brad

by BIGBAD RAM FAN on Sep 6, 2010 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Betts or Choice

Parker doesn’t make sense to me…and injury prone old RB. Not that Betts is young, but he has been a really good back RB for a long time. I like Choice too, I like how he runs, could be a really nice compliment SJax.

by bdemartin on Sep 4, 2010 6:53 PM CDT reply actions

I also like Choice. But would rather have Parker than Betts. Parker is younger and much more accomplished. Maybe even take a gamble on the often injured Torain as a third guy.

Ignorance is bliss and way too many people are happy.

by Everett 11 on Sep 4, 2010 7:19 PM CDT reply actions

We could have signed Parker

before he went to Washington. We had him in for a tryout and he didn’t have it anymore so they let him go on to the Redskins. Now the Redskins found out the same thing, Fast Willie isn’t fast anymore. He never had much to offer but speed, and now he doesn’t have that.

by andyhawk on Sep 4, 2010 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I know he is not the same back that he used to be but, in his last year with the Steelers he avg. 4 yards/rush and in the last pre season game he avg. 5 yards/rush so he still has something left, just not a starter anymore. At any rate we need a back up and one that has seen the field before. We could get Willie, Betts, Torain or Choice for a low ball contract but, if we don’t get a move on, we will get nothing.

Ignorance is bliss and way too many people are happy.

by Everett 11 on Sep 5, 2010 9:31 AM CDT up reply actions

do we need someone with all that much starting potential?

I really think SJ’s back is good to go so aren’t we just going to use the backup in situations to give SJ rest? If that is the case I would grab Choice any day of the week. He is young, and a solid um…. choice. Then we could grab someone in next years draft to start grooming for the inevitable that is going to happen within a few years…. so sad to even think of.

by stlfan2004 on Sep 5, 2010 11:15 AM CDT reply actions

I'd like to have someone

that could start if Jackson goes down. He’s not going to play 16 games most years. In fact, it’s only happened once:

by Toddius on Sep 5, 2010 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions

thanks for the link

it is nice to look at his overall career in lots of terms. I can’t wait to watch him this year. He has had to carry 3-4 defenders on his back for yards every play the last couple of years. It is going to be nice to watch him in a year that the will have to spread out and account for Bradfords passiing game. Maybe he can have another 2006 year….look at that…. god he is a stud

by stlfan2004 on Sep 5, 2010 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions

And we should all be happy they didn't trade him away last off-season like some people wanted

Because now that the passing game is obviously vastly improved, Jax is more valuable than ever. Completely agree with the need for someone who can be a legit starter for 2 or 3 games if needed. I wanted Sproles (wasn’t he available for about 12 minutes?) because he would’ve been both a change of pace and pinch starter, which is rare.

So Jax still has 2 or 3 good years left if they get someone else to (effectively) take some carries, and there is plenty of time to draft/train his replacement. Meanwhile, the franchise rookie QB’s best friend is a rugged running game. It’s allllllllllll good!

just found out today that J Bell was cut from the Bills

gotta say…. this is the first RB on waiver wires I’ve seen that i would be really excited if we signed…. i like him alot

by stlfan2004 on Sep 5, 2010 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll admit I'm one who would've traded him

But only if the price was right. At the time we were speculating 2 firsts.

by dbcouver on Sep 5, 2010 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions

i understood that he was worth alot in trading

and to be honest… the poor guy deserves to be on a superbowl team in his career…. but i am selfish… i never could have traded him… i would have been hearbroken

by stlfan2004 on Sep 5, 2010 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Joique Bell info

This is what the Scounts Inc thing says on him…take it for what it’s worth, which maybe isn’t much….but since you brought him up I went and checked a couple of reports on him.

5’11", 233lbs…4.71 40-yard dash.
Outstanding 3 cone drill at 6.84 (#1 was Jahvid Best’s 6.75)
Very good broad jump at 120 (#1 was Montario Hardesty 124)
25th ranked RB (by Scouts Inc, anyway)
Competitiveness 3 Runs hard and flashes a strong stiff arm but not as much of a wrecking ball runner as frame suggests. Can run east-west when should turn shoulders upfield and pick up what he can. Ran out of bounds after picking up just three yards on a third-and-4 play early in the second quarter of the 2008 Ferris State game.

Vision/Patience 4 Reads the flow of the defense and recognizes cutback lanes but lacks ideal instincts. Can be too patient and appears indecisive at times. Could do a better job of reading lead blocks and cutting up behind trapping guards. Can run into the back of blockers instead of cutting to either side.
Inside Runner 3 Not enough of a downhill runner at this point. Makes too many cuts behind the line of scrimmage for a back his size. However, shows some wiggle and can make defenders miss in the hole. Above-average balance. Can bounce off arm tackles and flashes the ability to pick up yards after contact.
Outside Runner 3 Lacks elite explosiveness but can suck defenders in by pressing the line of scrimmage and is quick enough to bounce outside when they bite. Doesn’t show a second gear and not an elusive runner that’s going to make many defenders miss when he gets into space.
Passing Game 3 Capable of throwing the ball downfield and has experience lining up at receiver. Can snatch the ball out of the air without breaking stride. On the other hand, going to have a tougher time separating from man coverage at the NFL level. Rounds off routes and doesn’t show great burst coming out of breaks. Though shows adequate awareness in pass protection needs to be more aggressive. Makes it too easy for defenders to get their hands up in passing windows.

by CoachConnors on Sep 5, 2010 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

233 and one of the best 3 cone drills...nice combo

wonder why he didn’t work out in Buffalo. But then again, the Bills are a contaminated football wasteland.

by CoachConnors on Sep 5, 2010 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions

they said it is just because they are so stacked at RB

they immediately signed him to their practice squad as their first ps choice

by stlfan2004 on Sep 5, 2010 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions

its very simple

just pick up Wille Parker for basically nothing and get TJ since we cant make a trade for V. Jaskson is it just me but or the Rams GM sucks just think about all the people they could of got to help Bradford out and the season is upon us and we have yet to get one pickup first it was TO then it was Westbrooke then it was Derrick Ward then it was V. Jackson then it was Willie Parker and Now its TJ Im starting to loose faith in the organization it seems like where the only team that cant get deals gone! As a organization you won 1 game last year and you mean to tell me you could find anyone of the waiver wire to help your team you cant convince me that!!!!!

by Ramsfan201 on Sep 5, 2010 1:11 PM CDT reply actions

You named a lot of veteran FA's

Remember… they have to want to come to us as well. So let’s chill on the Devaney bash. They made a few bold moves in clearing out the old roster and drafting a QB with our first pick this year. Bradford will define his tenure with the rams.
Would I have liked a trade for Santonio Holmes or Cromartie, you better believe it!
However, it is pretty apparent that they went with the youth movement and they are being cautious on which veterans they bring in. They are not going to allow their rebuilding of the lockerroom to be detoured by a bad apple.

Off topic..sorry. Allen is a kid from Cal that tore it up today

CaliRamMan is familiar with Cal so I thought I’d see what he thought about him.

by CoachConnors on Sep 5, 2010 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

oh.... ok

I was trying to pick my brain for who it was in the NFL. What school is he playing for.

by stlfan2004 on Sep 5, 2010 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Cal Bears

but he’s only a freshman.

4 recs for 120 yards and a TD
38 rushing yards and a TD
against an inferior opponent though, Cal outgained UC Davis 517 yards to 81

by CoachConnors on Sep 5, 2010 6:03 PM CDT up reply actions

nice

even if inferior opponent…. still nice to see a freshman come right out of the gate with performances like that

by stlfan2004 on Sep 5, 2010 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions

HAHA

that doesn’t even count! We are talkin about UCD vs Cal. Cal was clearly on a different level. Riley had all day to find evertything and anything.
Cal does look good and I have no problem bringling on a Tedford student. Sydquan Thompson has looked good even though he doesn’t fit the NFL mold. Hell, Desean Jackson didn’t fit the mold and he has done just fine.

by CaliRamMan on Sep 6, 2010 1:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I liked Thompson in the 6th

He went in the 7th. Did he stick?

by dbcouver on Sep 6, 2010 2:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd take Blount

New coolest name on the team. He’s a load and has worked in space. He can pick up the blitz too, it was a big part of his job at UO. Give him a whirl and knock Darby to the PS. I’d also like to try Jarrett Brown out in our system, but we alrerady have Lewis so we’d have to feel comfortable cutting Feeley, no pun intended.
I would like to get O-line help also by picking up a veteran.

by dbcouver on Sep 5, 2010 9:03 PM CDT reply actions

well a few things...

Darby cant be on the Practice Squad….which I’m ok with.
Blount has now punched two players in the head….one with a helmet
Jarrett Brown would be nicer than Thad Lewis on the practice squad.
Feeley needs to stay around…he has more back up experience than anyone.

by CaliRamMan on Sep 6, 2010 1:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm a duck homer so I'm biased

I don’t think Blount would be much of a risk at this point though. I’m just ansy for weapons, now that we have our QB and he seems to be further along than anyone anticipated.

by dbcouver on Sep 6, 2010 2:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I feel ya

I actually wouldn’t mind bringing Blount in. The combination of Sjax and him, defenses will be hating life…and walking away with some bruising.

by CaliRamMan on Sep 6, 2010 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Quick thoughts....from the new guy

First time posting, actually just joined the website, though I check it 40 times a day it seems. Can’t get enough of it. At any rate, a few quick thoughts…..I live in DC, so like it or not, I’m forced to watch the Skins on Sunday. Ladell Betts was a solid, reliable fill-in for Clinton Portis last season, so I wouldnt argue that he’d be a good fit as our #2. As someone already mentioned, Fast Willie’s not fast anymore…..at all! He’s actually slower than Larry Johnson (sheesh), who somehow made the team over much-liked rookie RB Ryan Torain. My thoughts, and I’m glad to see that I’m not alone, is that we should at least look at Legarrette Blount. I love what the Rams are doing not signing selfish, problem-laden players, but feel like this kid COULD appreciate learning from Stephen Jackson, and I’d like to think the coaching staff could keep him in line. 6 foot tall, 240 lbs. He’s a beast. What are your thoughts?

by DCRamFan on Sep 6, 2010 8:06 AM CDT reply actions

He has talent and potential,

but he has the Incognito problem of losing his temper. Knowing that, the other teams would constantly be doing stuff and saying stuff to him, trying to set him off just like they did Richie I. We don’t need another guy getting unsportsmanlike conduct and personal foul penalties because he can’t control his temper. Unless we are certain we could control that problem, I just think signing his is asking for trouble.

by andyhawk on Sep 6, 2010 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions

ok put that in his contract

you get two dumb pentalitys your gone! Point Blank

by Ramsfan201 on Sep 6, 2010 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Blounts not that bad I'm telling ya

His biggest mistake happened on national TV for 10 minutes he was a villain. He paid for it in draft position. Incognitos problem couldn’t be fixed. Blounts doesn’t need fixing, he’s already done it. throw out that Panthers thing, we never would have heard of it except for the BSU thing.

by dbcouver on Sep 6, 2010 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually he was suspended for being a bad teammate way before the punch on TV

One1 punch by itself is not that big of a deal. A pattern of behvavior is a big deal to some people, but not to everyone. (he was suspended by his coach for garbage he did before the punch, so yeah, his behavior is a pattern)

I think Spags probably thought he put in enough effort on Incognito to have to bring this guy aboard and go through that stuff all over again…what a distraction for a young team.

Still, probably someone would’ve drafted him if he was that good of a player. But dude was passed by every team, and it wasn’t all because of 1 punch.

by CoachConnors on Sep 6, 2010 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions

'Every Team?'

I know CoachConnors loves the quotation marks, as if he doesnt understand anything being said. I should’ve also put ‘coach’ as part of my login, and then I would demand more respect. CoachConnors, what positive do you have to say about anything? All you do is shoot down ideas/thoughts of other Rams fans. We’re all on here talking about OUR team and what WE think we can do to improve, and NONE of it fits the scheme of good ol CoachConnors! What in the world are you the coach of? Incognito seems to be your only go-to information. The dude is gone. Get over it! Please respond with something beneficial to the Rams fans that want feedback, not your criticism. My guess is that you coach a fantasy football team with Matt Leinert as your starting QB…..

by DCRamFan on Sep 6, 2010 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions

You're getting pretty mouthy for a new guy

on the board. Coach has gone over his background for us before. You should maybe check things out before issuing ridiculous guesses that just show how little you know.

by andyhawk on Sep 6, 2010 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

You're clearly

not giving up your 2010 Turfie Award without a fight.

by RamintheUK on Sep 7, 2010 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

sorry dude, but

It’s nothing personal.
We’re talking about the idea of Blount coming in, right? If you toss out an idea, be prepared to see some people agreeing and some who don’t.

I actually wrote a lot about my reasoning about Blount, but none of it was about you and you shouldn’t take it personally. Sorry if it rubbed you the wrong way.

by CoachConnors on Sep 6, 2010 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Ya you are right its getting alittle adictive

but I just wont the Rams to win Im just tired of people asking me who’s my Team and I Say the Rams and The hole room looks at me and start laughing, So I starting this to express some of my thoughts and In away I kind of hope someone in the organization is reading are post but I dought it but it wouldnt take anything to just look at him I think he is a Diamond in the Rough and if he would back up S. Jackson it would be a real domianting backfield!!!!!

by Ramsfan201 on Sep 6, 2010 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Couldnt agree with you more

Imagine having to tackle/run down not one, but two, 6’2" 240 lb. running backs ALL GAME LONG. Pretty brutal

by DCRamFan on Sep 6, 2010 1:48 PM CDT reply actions

If you had those guys in

the backfield just think what Bradford would do with those play action fakes!

by Ramsfan201 on Sep 6, 2010 1:56 PM CDT reply actions

Legarrette Blount has to be cheap!

…and that for me makes him worth a go. No lenghty contracts. See what he’s got for a year or two. If he’s productive and plays clean, he’s our guy!

by DCRamFan on Sep 6, 2010 2:02 PM CDT reply actions

if they had both of them

they could just line up and Pound you the hole game!
