NFL roster cuts: Rams updating their roster & waiver wire action [updated]

The St. Louis Rams take a big step toward the regular season today, cutting down the roster to just 53 players. NFL roster cuts are due today for all teams.

The Rams got a head start, already cutting six as of this morning. Those released so far: WR Jordan Kent, TE Darcy Johnson, S Brett Johnson, C Tim Mattran, LB Devin Bishop and CB Antoine Thompson

No surprises on that list, and the team has to cut 16 more by the end of the day.

The waiver wire makes up the other half of this story as teams nab a player and make a tweak or two to their rosters. Backup running backs, wide receivers and offensive linemen would be of the most interest to the Rams.

We'll update this post throughout the day as cuts come and interesting names appear on the waiver wire.

Some news of note so far:

The Cowboys are willing to listen to offers on RBs Marion Barber and Tashard Choice

Former Oklahoma WR Juaquin Iglesias was let go by the Bears...could a reunion with Sam Bradford be possible?

[update] I mentioned the Willie Parker cut in Washington already, but some other interesting names are popping up on the wire.  Washington also released RB Ryan Torain, who does have a looong injury history/

The Falcons released OL Jose Valdez, who played some LT in the preseason in addition to inside lineman.

Former Rams first round pick CB Tye Hill was cut by the Titans today too.

The Rams have cut OG Roger Allen III...he could wind up on the practice squad. LB Cardia Jackson and DT Ernest Reid have been cut too...13 more players still need to be cut.

GET TASHARD CHOICE

Shouldve tried to get him for Alex Barron, maybe thrown in a 5th round pick next year also.

Barber is decent too

Momma, momma, momma said Barber is decent too.

What momma wants, ain’t what momma always gets.

Juaquin

Unsure why he was cut by the Bears tho. Was it the complexity of the Mad Martz playbook, or that he wasn’t cutting it as a WR (dropping passes, no separation, no downfield blocking, etc.)?

Housh and Josh Wilson

are out in Seattle. Grab both. Seriously. Do it. They are both very good players who immediately add more talent to this team. They are both practically free as well. PLUS, I am sure they would want to stick it to Pete Carrol and the Seahags this year. Grab Marion Barber or Tashard Choice, as well, and we will have done some awesome things in a day.

Josh Wilson was traded to the Ravens a couple of days ago.

Tashard is my CHOICE!!!!

I think I would rather have Tashard Choice over any other free agent or player worth trading for!!! I’d be 100% satisfied with giving the cowboys a 3rd or 4th round draft pick for Choice! He is the kind of RB we need backing up SJax, He runs very hard and has the explosiveness to break for a big play. Also my wife is a Cowboys fan and Choice is her favorite player so if he came to the Rams, she may root for our team! Come on Devaney and company, let’s get this done!!!

I wouldn't mind Iglesias.

He could fill in for Avery as speedy receiver. He’s a little slower, but he’s not slow by any means. 4.44 40. Of course, if the Bears weren’t playing him for a reason, then we don’t need him.

i dont know anything about him

but his scoutitng report flaws said he is slower (def not a burner) and doesn’t fight for the ball. Do you know if that is accurate? Maybe being put back with a QB who he is comfortable with would help,

by stlfan2004 on Sep 4, 2010 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

he was Sam's best target at OU

stop looking at scouting reports and judge for yourself. People said Jerry Rice was too slow how did he turn out? People said Tom Brady was inaccurate and had a bad deep ball but he throws one of the best deep balls now. I like Juaquin and honestly i hated Sam when he was at OU but i think we give it a year. Ryan Broyles is a better prospect coming out of OU

by zaviex on Sep 4, 2010 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

um….that’s why i asked “do you know if this is accurate?”….. wouldn’t have asked if i thought scouting reports were iron clad

Barber

I would love to see Barber in a Rams uniform but The Cowboys picked up Marion Barber’s $4 million roster bonus last month, so I doubt they will let him go.

by 2cents on Sep 4, 2010 10:28 AM CDT reply actions

now if we could pick him up as a cut

with that salary and no draft picks at stake we should really go out and get him.

But...

In comments that weren’t noticed by many in December, Houshmandzadeh made it clear he wants to return to Cincy

do you think that has changed now

that they have TO and there isn’t much room for a WR on their roster?

by stlfan2004 on Sep 4, 2010 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Well if we took on a little salary

It would be better for Seattle to trade him than release him

by FlimtotheFlam on Sep 4, 2010 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions

lol

that really is the best part….. especially if we could pull some leftover production out of them that they couldn’t and they were footing the bill….haha

I hate ESPN

I just watched the NFC West Preview. The last 10 seconds were “By the way, we didn’t mention the Rams. Here’s why: Their last three win totals: 3,2, and 1. They keep that up, they’ll be the Lions from a couple years ago.” I’d rather they say nothing than that garbage.

Barber not a change of pace back to SJ

Barber has had injury problems in the past and I believe that choice is the better complementary back to SJ not only for this year but is the type of young player that I can see replacing SJ as the starter. Let’s face it guys, SJ is a beast but prolly has only 3 years left of elite pro bowl football. We need to start grooming our future in which case SJ may not be apart of(as much as we love him and he deserves to be on a championship driven team)

Oooooh shit the redskins released my boy Ryan Torain!

If we don’t get Tashard they better looking to swoop up Torain

I don't and to be honest with you I don't really care

this last week it looked like torain was going to beat out Parker and be the 3rd RB but now this happens and I’m praying the rams look at him.

Barber would be a great pickup!

Can you imagine Steven and Marion taking turns beating down the defense? By the 3rd quarter, the other teams will be begging for no more running plays!!!!

id prefer choice

whats the point of having 2 RBs with the same style

by zaviex on Sep 4, 2010 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I’d like Choice better just due to health concerns and less wear and tear, but either one would be great at the right price. Just don’t think anything will come of it.

Some more players of interest:

Matt Leinart (as a backup QB…cut Feeley)
Ladell Betts (unless we get an RB from Dallas, which would be a dream. TAKE CHOICE!)
Al Afalava (strengthen the safety depth)

Keep it classy St. Louis!
