NFL roster cuts: St. Louis Rams final roster prediction

The St. Louis Rams final 53-man roster is due tomorrow. Which players will make the cut?

Players will have the day off today after making their final cases for roster spots in last night's preseason finale. The St. Louis Rams coaches and front office people, however, will be hard at work reviewing notes and film as the winnow down the Rams final 53-man roster, due by the end of the day tomorrow.

And who will make the final cut? TST takes a stab at the Rams 2010 final roster.

Star-divide

QB - Bradford, Feeley, Thaddeus Lewis

I think that Lewis might get the nod based on how well he has play in each of his appearances this preseason. It's really a toss up though.

RB - Jackson, Kenneth Darby, Keith Toston, Mike Karney

I think Darby, for now, is the primary backup because nobody else has really shown more and he has the experience. Still, the Rams' backup is probably still on someone else's roster.

TE - Hoomanawanui, Bajema, Fendi Onobun

Illinois Mike is the starter; he's gotta be, right? Onobun has shown enough that he won't last on the practice squad and he plays special teams well.

WR - Robinson, Amendola, Gibson, Mardy Gilyard, Dominique Curry, Keenan Burton

I'd say Keenan Burton, who has had a nice camp, but has almost disappeared in games when he really needed to make an impact, will make the final cut. I also thin that the Rams will add another receiver after teams make their final cuts and either Burton or Curry will be gone.

OL - Saffold, Bell, Brown, Goldberg, Smith, Hank Fraley, John Greco, Renardo Foster, Roger Allen III

Last year, they took 10 OL for their first version of the 53-man roster. This year, need at wide receiver takes precedent over that tenth spot.

Defense

DL - Chris Long, Fred Robbins, Gary Gibson, James Hall, George Selvie, Clifton Ryan, Darrell Scott, Jermelle Cudjo, Victor Adeyanju

This is another position where the Rams could make a move after roster cuts. That's 9 players, last year the Rams started the season with 10. That could still happen, but I think injuries impacting the secondary right now and/or some solid talent at LB will necessitate one less defensive lineman. Eugene Sims could easily be added to this list.

LB - Larry Grant, James Laurinaitis, Na'il Diggs, David Vobora, Bobby Carpenter, Chris Chamberlain

Yeah, that's seven linebackers which seems like a lot. However, Chamberlain is a special teams stud. There was talk the other day that Vobora could be on the bubble, but he could start at any of the three LB spots. I have a hard time leaving Hull off this list as he's played very well through the preseason, albeit rather quietly. He leads the team in tackles through the preseason, but with a decent group of linebackers he probably ends up on the practice squad...and gone. Cardia Jackson is a guy to keep your eye on, but he'll probably end up on the practice squad.

DB - James Butler, Oshiomogho Atogwe, Ron Bartell, Bradley Fletcher, Craig Dahl, Kevin Payne, Jerome Murphy, Justin King, Kevin Dockery, Marquis Johnson

Keep an eye on friend of TST Kevin Payne who suffered a knee injury last night that he'll have examined today. That could impact roster decisions depending on the severity of it. This is a better group that the Rams have had at DB for some time. I like what we've seen from Johnson, though he is still looking like a rookie at times. It's been a quiet preseason for Atogwe; however, he has been better closing up the backfield even if the turnovers haven't been there.

Specialists - Josh Brown, Donnie Jones, Chris Massey

We'll know soon enough. Stay tuned.

Couple quibbles, overall good list

Sando is firm in thinking Null has the 3rd string job, and I’ll lean with him.

That OL group is really shaky after the first five. I barely trust Fraley and Greco, and don’t trust Allen or Foster at all. If anything, I expect the Rams to make a move here after other teams’ roster cutdowns, and take ten to the season.

Even though Fells hasn’t excited, I see him making the team. I would be surprised, but not shocked, if he’s cut.

I don’t think Burton is on the bubble that you do. He’s definitely on firmer ground than Curry, with gluefingers in games 3 and 4, especially considering he came back to play well in Game four after sitting out practice with some knee sweeling. I like Curry a lot, but he just can’t hold onto the ball. A real good football player without a position.

Darby vs Toston vs Ogbonnaya… I go back and forth on this trio. Darby seems like the leader now but could just as easily get cut. It depends on the mix the team is looking for.

I totally agree

Darby as a backup again? No need to push me off he cliff I will jump. We have got to get someone of the waiver wire to back up SJ .

Yes we did.

I fear that Hull will get picked off the squad right away…being a Penn State linebacker already gives him a rep =(. He can be really good!

I like Hull too...

Every team can use a tackling machine…a smart PSU linebacker who quietly tackles like a machine. I’d keep him over Chamberlain…or maybe get rid of one of the DBs?

what about

Alexander? He’s not gonna be a WR on the 53-man roster?

Sounds like...

Danario isn’t quite healthy yet. since they didn’t play him in the last preseason game, he might go under the radar on our practice squad as long as they really emphasize he’s still not fully healthy.

by Rams Homer on Sep 3, 2010 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

alright, gotcha

Well i hope they get him involved more and that he’ll get a chance to start.

I really hope that Mardy will have a great year, that speedy mofo.

Idea: maybe Rams can draft James (or maybe Quizz) Rogers in later rounds next year. I’m a beavs’ fan, so that’d be cool to see

by sergey606 on Sep 3, 2010 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Eek nothing against James but his lack of height will really hurt at the receiver spot.

Quizz, on the other hand, is like 190+ pounds at 5’7 right? That’s really good and he runs like he’s 6’0 210 so I really would not mind that one at all. What if Mark Ingram somehow fell out of the first? One can dream…

by douchiedude on Sep 3, 2010 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Quizz

is still small, he’s just elusive and quick. He does outweigh James by 10 or 15 lbs and I believe they’re the same height. James has a way to somehow get open, or make a catch to help out the QB.
Watching highlights from the ‘08 game, when they beat USC, one of the trojan LBs just reached out and grabbed quizz, throwing him to the ground, giving you an example of why it sucks being smaller (but he did make like 4 defenders miss prior to that).
It’s true, being short really hurts them both, but I think they can make it work.

Could we put Danario on the IR or PUP list

It’s highly unlikely he plays this year and he is quite healthy. If we do this he could practice just couldn’t play. Plus he can’t be picked up off the practice squad

Not catchy enough

We need a nickname that will sound great at the dome, the way we used to do with BRUCE. I’m thinking HO OH – 60,000 yelling HO OH! Or just shorten it to HO – er maybe that’s not such a good idea

by MathB on Sep 3, 2010 3:09 PM CDT reply actions

Yes, I really do.

He wasn’t special or anything last year but I liked what I saw and our o-line is easily better than the Redskins’ were last year.

Nope

He never really helped out in DC. Sans staying heathly.

by Boofer on Sep 3, 2010 3:33 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Personally, I think Fells could be the fourth tight end with Burton or Curry out at receiver.

But this roster looks good, love the starters (for the most part) and like the depth. O-line looks great, secondary looks great, front seven definitely looks great. Who is this Bradford you speak of? Shouldn’t Null be on this list instead?

Alright here it is...

T.J. Whosyourmomma, Laurent Robinson on the outside with Danny Amendola as slot. Would love to see that as our starting receivers. T.J. is on the block and I think we could get him for a 3rd rounder. 7 million guaranteed is a big hit but we have the space. Anyway now im gonna throw on some old spice and eat some dorritos.

by Rams311 on Sep 3, 2010 3:23 PM CDT reply actions

3d rounder is too much

If he gets traded it will be for a 5th or 6th, especially considering the salary.

by Toddius on Sep 3, 2010 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Giving a high (or even mid-round) draft pick for a cap hit of $7 million and an aging Houshmandzadeh would be lunacy, particularly after the Rams already discarded the idea of Vincent Jackson for about $10 million a year.

by Abrantes on Sep 3, 2010 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree with your list

I think you are pretty close. I wonder about 5 DT’s though. That would be a real luxury, especially since Spags likes to replace them with DE’s on 3rd down. I think keep Sims on the 53 and Cudjo to the practice squad.

by 2cents on Sep 3, 2010 3:25 PM CDT reply actions

NOT related but just a quick note:

It appears the Rams made a wise choice in not going after Brian Westbrook. He’s already injuried and I heard he’s questionable for the start of the regular season.

Go Rams!

"We can't run. We can't pass. We can't stop the run. We can't stop the pass. We can't kick. Other than that, we're just not a very good football team right now." --- Bruce Coslett, New York Jets Head Coach circa 1990s

Really doesn't matter at this point in time

Now,if he made the 53 man roster THEN got hurt, that would piss me off. But it’s moot.

Danario Alexander...

Would it create a problem if they put DX on IR? He doesn’t count against the roster then, right?

Just a thought since they signed him really late in the preseason and then I heard a short interview with Spags where he says DX has some atrophy and the muscles aren’t as strong as they should be. He then went on to say that it’s best for DX to take it slow and make sure he’s completely healed. hmmmm… stash him! Hide him!

I think the PUP idea for Alexander

makes a lot of sense. He isn’t in condition to play yet, so putting him on the active roster makes no sense, but if he has a chance of getting healthy and playing later in the year PUP is the way to go.

by andyhawk on Sep 3, 2010 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Unless something obvious falls in their lap

The Rams should just keep molding what they have a wideout. Yeah it is a weakness, but not for lack of talent IMO just lack of experience. The Rams look fast! I dont know, if it were me, I would be focused solely on the Offensive line. It looks like they took a huge step forward this preseason, but we will see how well they handle the blitz next sunday because it will be coming often as teams know the rams cant pickup the blitz.

Man I certainly hope they keep Lewis as a backup. I was just impressed with his play last night with the 3rd string oline having problems and he kicked them in the ass at the end there and put the game away. I thought he played better than Troy Smith.

by leadhead on Sep 3, 2010 7:33 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah I really like lewis as well

but I heard that the rams were leaning towards null. im not exactly sure why but the coaches seem to really like keith.

by Buck Nasty87 on Sep 3, 2010 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Lots of good calls, Van

The next few days will be very interesting along the 2nd-3rd-4th levels of QB, RB and TE.

I think Thad has to stay, and then if that happens I don’t know why they’d keep both Feeley and Null, and I think Feeley stays. I think Darby is a lock at RB2. Has Tosten shown enough to matter?

TE is tough. I’m still not sure Fendi has been exposed enough that they must keep him active and I think Bajema has outplayed Fells. But does that mean anything? Maybe not.

I like the O-line! I’ll save outright confidence for when they maul a couple of other teams in real games. I still think the inexperience at OT might be problematic but so far Bradford has made the most of what they have given him, and I really didn’t expect him to move as well as he does. That sure compensates for a lot.

by Rams311 on Sep 3, 2010 10:34 PM CDT reply actions

Who cares? If he can't make it in Seattle, he must really be done.

The radio announcers last night were saying Greco really looked good last night. He was pancaking guys and moving on to block the second level, according to them. I hope that’s somewhere near the truth, because that line needs solid backups badly.

by andyhawk on Sep 3, 2010 10:43 PM CDT up reply actions

it's not about ability

its that he is about to get 7 mil and he doesnt want to play there

by Rams311 on Sep 3, 2010 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

If he doesn't want to play there,

why did he sign a FA contract with them? He doesn’t sound like much of a team player if he takes their money and then decides he doesn’t like them and stops making the effort. Why would we want a guy like that on our team?

Actually, I think it is about ability. WRs, just like anyone else in the NFL, reach a point where they suddenly can’t contribute a lot anymore, and I think he’s reached that point.

by andyhawk on Sep 4, 2010 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions

let's keep 2 QB's

Neither one of them is going to play unless we have injuries. Since learning a new O take forever what team is going to tick up Null or Lewis at this point. Neither one of them impressed enough to warrant a serious look from other teams. They can learn from the practice squad. If Bradford is not the QB for the next 10 years we have bigger problems than either one of them can handle anyway.
