NFL week 3: Early game open thread

The St. Louis Rams don't play until 3:05 p.m. CT, but  there's plenty of football on tap for the early slate of games.

Heck, you might even see an offense or two that works right.

Being in the middle part of the state (MO), I'll probably be watching the Chiefs and 49ers...making myself feel icky for rooting for KC, but at least it's against SF.

Competitive game today

I’m going to predict a competitive game today for several reasons:

1) The reverse jinx – I’m terrible at sports betting and put $50 on the Skins today. Knowing my luck with gambling, I just bought the Rams a win or a competitive game today. I’d much rather lose my bet and buy the Rams a win.

2) Passes Short has his butt on the line – Our OC, Pat “Passes Short” Shurmur’s butt is on the line. I am positive that a closed door meeting happened today that said, “You have nothing to lose, open up the damn playbook. Let’s entertain the 60k in paid attendance today by showing what our $50M investment can do.”

3) Our D will be solid – Flajole called out the D line to get more pressure. Yesterday, I watched as the UCLA Bruins offense struggled mightily and watched the defense win the game. Something tells me that Washington’s O line is not world beaters if they cannot run. Our D needs to get fired up and inside the head of Washington’s O-Line.

UFL

Last night I watched the Sacramento Mountain Lions take on the Florida tuskers. Some familiar names played last night:

1) Fakhir Brown played as the #1 corner for the Tuskers. He gave up the game winning TD on a double move (slant to post). Of course you knew that was coming.

2) Opposite Fakhir Brown was Adam Vinnett who was undrafted and in the Rams camp for some time. He also got picked on a lot and gave up serious yardage to an aged Daunte Culpepper.

3) Tim McGarigle played the mike and was repeatedly burnt and was benched in favor of another MLB who played slightly better. If you recall, he was our 7th round pick in 2008 (I think).

So if you thought our 2010 team was bad, the 2008 and 2009 teams were much worse. There has been some improvement in our FO.

Lions won

So no Dennis Green “Crown ’em” melt down. Check out his terrific record at Northwestern

I hope

they spent a lot of time talking about blitz pickup and plays that burn the blitz. Could be a week we see a lot of screens. When the other team is blitzing, there’s extra field open somewhere in front of you – the challenge is finding it.

man the nfc west is SO weak this year

just if we pulled off those 2 close wins we could be in first place ugh

here is a positive one though

what if we had drafted Clausen with our number 1 draft pick and given him the 50 million

by stlfan2004 on Sep 26, 2010 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Seriously though you gotta give devaney and co credit

bradford was a risky pick… he was coming off injury and had always worked out of the shotgun…. they had really good eyes on that pick

I bet we see Gilyard turns out to be one

I think he’s a playmaker, but he’s a struggling rookie who can’t get time on the field to break out those skills.

by CoachConnors on Sep 26, 2010 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

he fell behind due to various reasons

i just hope he turns out half as good as hes been for me on madden

by Buck Nasty87 on Sep 26, 2010 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm pretty patient with rookies

I won’t even think about grading that pick for a year and a half

i like him I really do

I think he has done well progressing his stiyle of preseason training, i think they have done excellant bringing Bradford along, his defense looks chippier that any defense we have had in a while, their development of young talent is really good, and he is incredible at uniting his team but I want to see him showing a little more aggression now with the players and coaches. Even kind mentors need to give a little tough love every now and then to push their people to the next level. I look at him as a second year developing player (as a coach)… I have seen progression but I want to keep seeing it so that I know he hasn’t reached his ceiling.

Wow

The Chiefs are decimating the Niners, maybe our division would be up for grabs, if we could get our act together. Today is the day, GO RAMS!!!

+1

let’s all say a prayer that our team plays a clean game. If they can keep the mental lapses down they do have a shot.

The 49ers are garbage.

On a slightly related note it’s only a matter of time before Dexter McCluster has a season edning injury

by CoachConnors on Sep 26, 2010 2:34 PM CDT reply actions

lol.... i don't know

has he screwed up calls all day… if so …. then probably

by stlfan2004 on Sep 26, 2010 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

he's made some calls that have really effected the game

instead of like a 30 yard play, giants got a safety b/c of a chop block. Requires a defender to be engaged and blocked right below the knees. Well the o-line had like a finger on the defender so I guess he was technically engaged. Still didn’t seem in the spirit of the rule and it really effected the game.

basically stuff like that all day, any chance to blow the whistle he gets it, sometimes correct, sometimes he should have let them play.

49ers

after all the talk about how they were going to run away with the division… well I bet they feel foolish now

Winners train. Losers complain.

Thms Jones has juice left, apparently

too bad he wasn’t a change from Jackson or maybe they would’ve looked into him.

by CoachConnors on Sep 26, 2010 2:46 PM CDT reply actions
