Gary Gibson "Breakdown" WK 3

(NOTE: Click the headine to go to the post and see the video in full width)

Hey guys! This week I wanted to take a look at DT Gary Gibson.. Gary is sort of the "forgotten man" on our defensive line, and after noticing how active he was last thursday, I had to isolate him this week and see just why he was making so much noise.

This week the "TST Telestrator" has been born and i've also improved the video quality a bit and added slow-mo (due to some awesome constructive criticism).

Enjoy!

Props to the Front Office

In the beginning of the season last year, I was less than excited about an UDFA named Gary Gibson. Now he has really become one of the toughest players with the most heart on our Defense. Ive grown to really like this guy. Props to Devaney and the scouts for finding a UDFA of his caliber. Ill take more Gary Gibson type players any day….

Thanks for the breakdown VT…

Good call on showing Gibson

I noted in the comments of my Game 3 post that he was active and showed consitantly good persuit, and I’m glad you decided to show some of his stuff. I was impressed with his play and I think he’s definitely a new number to keep an eye on.

Great video improvement...

… and awesome job VT! I think it is worth mentioning how well Gary Gibson tackled from behind. Textbook play.

Don't mean to be negative, but

Didn’t the run get five yards? To me, that is a good solid run. If you get another, that is a first down. Am I missing something? I love the replay by the way.

He actually got 2 yards...

And if Gibson had not made the play, it would have been 10. Not every breakdown is going to be a “fantastic” play, but in all reality this WAS a fantastic play by Gibson, and should be duely noted :-) Glad you liked it!

yeah.... that run started about 5 yard behind the line of scrimmage

I think that is what you were basing that off of. It was actually a great tackle. If he hadn’t have made the play it would have been alot more yardage. I don’t expect them to hold the offense to a loss or zero yards every time but if they can get one defensive player per play to get an good push like this we would have a great defense. Thanks VT!! I think these breakdowns are awesome, You managed to add another aspect to TST that everyone looks forward to.

Maybe I am wrong,

It looks as though the line of scrimage is about the 41 to 42 and ends up at the 46 to 47. Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to take anything away from Gibson.

by crashoveride01 on Aug 31, 2010 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

No problem :-) You're looking at the initial yard marker..

They gained 2 yards on first down.. they were at the 43 on this play :-)

Look at the WR on the right.. he was a yard past the line of scrimmage

if they were on the 41

good play and good analysis

Gibson made a number of these shed and pursuit type plays. Ryan is the kind of a guy who is hard to move where Gibson goes after the ball call carrier and reacts better. I think we will be a little more solid with Robbins and Gibson on the inside with Ryan and Scott coming of the bench.

If you love something, set it free. If it doesn't come back, find it and kill it.

YES I agree

Gibson has a very good initial burst and an uncanny knack for shedding blockers

Popularity by many players

allows really good players to rise from behind the scenes.

Great stuff, VT

I was high on Gibson’s efforts last year as well; his power game, as you laid out in this video, is impressive. I haven’t seen any of the preseason games, but hopefully he’s added some agility in his upper body. He is a bit slow with his arms, but with his trunk power, he can make plays in the run game fa sho.

You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

Yea, i’m really impressed with him thus far.

Was Gibson a UDFA last year?

I really thought he was an unrestricted free agent vet we picked up last year. Wow! Really good scout job by Devaney on this guy. I noticed him pop last year and he is showing some great stuff this year too.

not that it wasn’t a great pick up either way but if he was an undrafted rookie I was super impressed…haha

really good job VT

I really was hoping someone would bring up Gary he was all over the field and constantly in the backfield. I’m really surprised he didn’t get a roughing the passer call on that one play where he crushed Brady and we all know how the refs and league try to protect him. I say you break down Doomanawanui and yes i said that correctly. Dooms day for anyone who comes in his path.

Toughness

I really like the element of toughness he brings to our DLine. When he is on the field, Chris Long and Clifton Ryan play better. He may not be the most talented DT in the league but he doesn’t like to get beat by anyone. I actually enjoyed the reports that he fought with Steven Jackson in practice. It shows that he is super competitive and doing something to piss off the offense (which is actually a good thing). His presence makes those around him play harder. Go Gibson!

nice video

I’ve watched the video a few times and here’s what I see.

The Pats have overloaded the weakside with two TE’s and the Rams Linebackers have shifted to the weakside. Gibson can be clearly seen because his head is bordering on becoming offside. Too me it also seems the Rams are keying on the play coming to the weakside judging by the D-Line. Robbins i think or whoever is the LDT is over the center and just inside the hash markings, Chris Long the LE at the top is outside the Tackle.

In this play the whole Pats line is sliding to the weakside. This means Gibson is essentially one on one with the Center. I believe to be a quality d-lineman you need to win this matchup more often than not to be considered good. The center has to spike the ball and is initially moving sideways, Gibson just takes him on straight up the gut getting the push. This is a good play by him but he really should be making this play consistently, its much easier to push a guy backwards who’s moving sideways than a guy who’s locked on to you and just run blocking straight ahead. To me this is a good defensive play for this particular run rather than a man dominating or showing anything spectacular.

I would be keen to know what Larry Grant or whoever is the linebacker to Laurinaitis’s left is doing. He looks to be playing man on man as has no blockers on him and could make a play on the running back but he doesn’t make the play I would like to see. As a defense I would want to be physical and I would want this linebacker just making a bee line for the RB. However his movement at about 2min41sec is weird because he seems to almost stop. What do you guys think?

by BrandonT on Aug 31, 2010 6:05 PM CDT reply actions

Larry Grant had a weak game against the pats

I have been impressed with him so far but IMO both he and Lil Animal had a weak game. I am not sure what the deal was.

Something else you can see on the replay

is Gibson’s first step is pretty quick. He’s full into the Center before any of the other D linemen are into their guys, and before the Center is really ready for it. That’s a competitive advantage that helps make the play as much as his power does. At the combine, Linemen run the full 40-yard dash but are usually compared to each other only on the split time of the first 10 yards. Teams want to gauge how fast their first one or two steps are, hoping they can play like Gibson does here.

Nice work VT

I can’t offer anything I’d do differently, it’s very detailed and explanatory, thanks.
I’d like to note, He had his assignment won if he didn’t lay a hand on the RB. The DE and OLB on that play should have had the tackle. Gibson got in on it and as you pointed out made an excellent play. It wouldn’t have gotten that yardage if the DE had held up. Neither he nor the OLB were doubled and it was a weak-side running play.
As soon as the handoff was made the safety should’ve gunned up, he didn’t until the gain of 2-3 was made. This play made it 3rd and 5, right? that’s a passing down for a team like the pats. That narrows down the assignments on the 3rd down play, which is the primary directive of second down defense.
