Random Ramsdom, 8/31: Rams injury update

EARTH CITY MO - JULY 31: James Butler #37 and Justin King #31 both of the St. Louis Rams practice defensive drills during training camp at the Russell Athletic Training Facility on July 31 2010 in Earth City Missouri. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images)

Who knew a backup FB/TE would generate as much buzz as it did? To me, it's more evidence of the excitement building around the Rams as the puzzle starts to fit into place and for the first time in a long time there's legitimate cause for excitement. Or something like that...

The St. Louis Rams will make their final roster move for today's deadline by waiving injured OT Phil Trautwein, who will be out of action for 6-8 weeks with a torn MCL. The Rams depth at OT depends on their depth at OG, where Adam Goldberg would slide over from his inside spot should one of the Rams tackles miss time. Either Hank Fraley or John Greco would sub for Goldberg. Greco is practicing again, albeit in a limited role.

In other injury news, SS James Butler is expected to be ready to play by week 1. Will he get the starting SS job over Craig Dahl who has played well in the preseason?

The PD takes a look at some of the longshot players hoping to make the final cuts. One of the four players profiled is RB Keith Toston, who'll get a thorough evaluation against the Ravens this week.

ESPN 101 asks former Rams coach Rick Venturi and personnel man Tony Softli about WR Antonio Bryant. The money quote comes from Softli:

The Bengals signed him with 8 million guaranteed. For them to cut him tells the league they made a mistake, and he is not healthy.

Rams Gab looks at the performance of the defensive front seven against the Patriots

St. Louis is a baseball town, but that could be changing speculates Rams Gab. It should be changing. The Rams are an up and coming team with youth and enthusiasm, the Cardinals...

This fanpost from garrett1442 makes the case for Brandon Gibson as the #2 WR given his playing ability on the outside.

I'm looking forward to seeing Toast'em

in with the first unit. I hope they play him with the starting line in.

Derrick Ward is a FA now

He is a former giant, therefore has the spags connection. Plus he’s a lot better than who we have. Anyone like the thought of fire and beast?

I wonder what Spaggs thinks of him

If he liked what he saw in New York I bet this guy is quickly on the radar. He didn’t do much last year with the Bucs but different schemes work to highlight different players talents. The year before with the Giants he rushed for over 1000. Could be a real possibility. Definately better than the backups we have now IMO. I wonder how much money he would want
