I'm Just Gonna Say It...Vincent Jackson
Although this is probably not going to happen, how would you feel about the Rams showing interest in Vincent Jackson. His value is dropping by the day in San Diego as he continues to hold out. He also provides a solid WR1 who is considerably young still with solid starting experience for a perennially good team. If Santonio Holmes can be traded for a 5th rounder, it is certainly possible that Jackson's value may be substantially diminished from what it was a season ago. Just some food for thought...

Who is paying?
I can’t see Stan doing it.
I’d love to have him on the Rams as it should be an instant upgrade. But he needs to drop his demands for guaranteed money. Should a new CBA include a rookie cap we will likely be paying well over the odds for a luxury.
with all the great receivers in the upcoming draft is he really worth a (likely high) second round pick?
with all of the great pass rushers
in the upcoming draft, is a receiver really worth a top 10 spot when we can get vjax for (possibly) a 3rd rounder? a few weeks ago i was all for a jonathan baldwin or a julio jones but if we can get vjax for the right price, BRING HIM IN. i honestly thought he was arguably the best receiver last year, though i do think that a lot with my best fantasy performers =)
I used to upload the NCAA Football '09 and '10 rosters into Madden and always drafted Sam Bradford onto the Rams in Franchise Mode...I liked him before he was cool =)

Well if we could honestly get him for a 3rd rounder then they should jump on that without any hesitation
but next years draft class is expected to even more talented than the last which means we can get first round talent with our high 2nd round pick. i just dont think vjax is worth a high 2nd rounder at this point. anything less, by all means jump on it.

We might...
even be able to trade our 2nd next year to get back up into the first round to take either a DE or a WR, whichever one we don’t take with our first pick. No more than a 3rd for VJ.

that was another scenario i looked at
and i definitely like that one. baldwin (my fav receiver next year) could be a late first rounder with the receiver depth but de depth is so deep too we can go either way. we can probably get a 2nd round talent dt in the 3rd as well.

this is my own personal opinion, and I am a huge Rams fan
I like our corps of Robinson, Amendola, Gilyard, Gibson and company BUT like someone else pointed out, they are all good #2’s or slot receivers not #1’s. We have not been able to stretch the field for a long time, and the only option to do that was Donnie Avery and now we don’t even have him.
With Jackson, I understand what he’s doing and he knows he is going to to get a bad rep. for it but you only have one prime, and he is in it and he wants to secure his future and his family for the rest of their lives. I’ve seen the guy play, and he plays hard and he cares about what he does on the field.
I would accept that we give up a 2nd or a 3rd rounder for him with out a doubt. If we can get a stud defensive player at DE, DT or CB plus basically Vincent Jackson as our 2nd rounder that’s would be awesome. Sure, your going to pay a lot of money for Jackson, but it’s better to pay someone you know your going to get production from than pay someone you hope you will get production from.
So all in all, give them a 2nd for Jackson then lock him up. Bradford, SJackson,VJackson would bring a scare to defenses for a long time and most of all bring winning back to St. Louis.
Sam Bradford
Well Said...
The draft next year is going to be a pivotal year for the Rams. So far under this regime, we have some great players with potential drafted in those positions (Bradford, Smith, Laurenaitis, and Saffold). Jackson is certainly a great player but we must be sure that we do not give up too much for him. Some players that the Rams may be considering come April 20100: (Clayborn-DE, Heyward-DE, Austin-DT, Aukerma-CB, Bailey-DE, Little-WR, Green-WR). For us to give up a prime pick, we need to be POSITIVE that Jackson is a sure thing for the next 5 years. I don’t like the idea of giving up any of our top picks, regardless of our need at WR. The price must be right…
there are some GREAT defensive linemen in the upcoming draft.
marvin austin, greg romeus, von miller, cameron heyward, adrian clayborn, jurrell casey, robert quinn, marcel darius just to name a few first round prospects. jurrell casey for dt or adrian clayborn for de would be great.

problem is
is an FA is a guaranteed performer, if he comes to the rams it isnt for championships it’s for $ who’s to say he won’t just sleep on that paycheck till he retires?
he is also suspended for at LEAST first 3 games.
i’d rather gamble and draft a wr who could become a stud than sign a stud who could become a flop…
Bradford to Onobun!
sounds solid to me
I just don’t know enough about vjax to make the case. It would be nice to go defense in the 1st next year though.
If you love something, set it free. If it doesn't come back, find it and kill it.
i don't think it would be a sound business decision
Not that we don’t need to address WR but this next draft WILL occur with a rookie salary cap. We can’t afford to pay top dollar when we can draft like talent and pay less. I’m as excited as anyone about our team but we’re not going to the playoffs this year. Focusing on the future includes fiscal responsibility.

very good point
I forgot all about the upcoming rookie salary cap coming into play.
If San Diego would take our high 3rd pick,
and Jackson would back off a little on his salary demands, I could see the Rams making the move. Otherwise, it would just be too expensive in more ways than one.
The last I heard, his agent is saying the Chargers won’t let him talk to anyone but Seattle. Has that changed?
VJackson & Seattle talked but nothing came out of it

if we could get him for a second rounder...
then maybe. a third? no doubt about it. but that’s doubtful.
Give 'em a 2nd rounder and get the guy in here ASAP.
IF, like we think, Bradford is gonna be good, it’s absolutely essential he have a top quality receiver. There is an offensive foundation in place now; Bradford, Jackson, bookend OT’s Saffold and Smith, and Brown at Center. We may even have a credible TE this year. But we’re still hurting at WR.
180?
You are now including Smith as a foundation piece (and calling him by his actual last name)?
I should be working right now...
I am hoping against hope that Smith turns out to be worth 1/2 the $$$ that was invested in him.
I wouldnt have picked him in the draft. Nonetheless, he still has more upside than what else we’ve got left to replace him. I worry that he’ll have trouble making it through 16 games with that soft-head. And, it’s hard to call Goldberg and Bell “foundation pieces.”
LOL...
…and it sounds like he’s warming up to Bradford too :)
Way to go RamChop! He’ll be better than your boy Suh, you’ll see!
by Pekka for Predator Pontiff on Aug 28, 2010 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions
I was initially for Suh. But we needed a QB and I always preferred Bradford over Clausen, unlike some others.
I still wish we had a mauler on the D-Line. That’s gonna hurt us this year. Like when Brady reeled off three TD’s in a row against us Thurs nite. If ya can’t bring pressure on the QB with consistency that’s a killer. We need at least four more credible NFL players to have a real shot at the NFC West; WR, b/u RB, D-LIneman and O-Lineman. Bulger, Boller, Barron, Incognito, Gado, McMicheal and Leonard Little are well gone. But Null, Adenyaju, Vobora, Darby, Obog and Tosten need to take the train too. None of these dudes have any trade value and are detriments to the team.
I'd be ok with our offensive line
as long as we could get better receivers and the backup running back you mentioned. I think our line is solid.
Goldberg is a career backup and now he's starting. What if somebody gets injured? Who ya gonna call?
Fraley and Greco ain’t got it.
what positions on defense do you think we should go with?
Not smartass either…. I am actually asking the question. I love Laurianatis (spelling?) Long looks like he is going to possible breakout this year and I love what I have seen from Selvie. I still think cornerback is a week spot depth wise and safety …well I am a little worried …. Atogwe will hopefully pick off some more balls this year but that is about all the really strong talent I see there
I'm thinking D-line
But I’m flip-flopping from DT to DE. I guess draft position and who shows up this season will tell. But I agree we need secondary help. It sure would be nice to evaluate everyone healthy.
I like Robert Quinn, Marcell Dareus, Cameron Heyward, Adrian Clayborn, not in that particular order. Hell, I’d like to draft the UNC starting 11.
I think Butler, Fletcher and Carpenter will end up being ok. Payne is just another 7th rounder - not much expectation there.
Unless Selvie turns out to be a diamond in the rough that everybody missed, Chris Long is a our D-Line and that’s bad. I’ve said all year that we can’t rely on guys like Hall, Adenyaju, Ah You, Ryan, Robbins and Gibson to get the job done. Although I don’t like him personally, Albert Haynesworth could just stand in the way with his big ass and do a better job than the aforementioned players. But, we elected to overlook DT in the draft infavor of Murphy and TWO TE’s. I have serious doubts about Diggs and Vobora being worth anything. Old guy and a never was. Atogwe is getting alot of kudos but the man is near 30 and suffered a shoulder and groin injury. He may not be as good as we’d hoped. For sure no other NFL team was the slightest bit interested in him. Looks like the offense is gonna have to score a lotta points this year and I don’t mean FG’s.
So...
You think Carpenter, the guy who has played poorly for much of training camp will do well, but you think Diggs, the guy who has looked stronger in camp, won’t be worth anything. I can’t figure out how your logic works.
Shurmur, your career is in 3rd and long. Don't run a draw.
Onobun > Gates
I thought Fred Robbins has looked pretty good
So far this preseason. And our run stopping in preseason has been nothing short of great. All starts with the D line. Not saying it can’t be improved but its not the weakness so far i think most of us feared.
by Stonedtodeath on Aug 29, 2010 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions
D Line
If you pay attention to our Preseason games, our Interior DLine has looked pretty damn good to date. Gibson, Robbins, Ryan, Scott, and Ah You have had a pretty good rotation going and have done a pretty good job of holding the Run. Now if we can get some pressure from our DE’s (Long, Hall, Selvie, Adeyanju) we can talk. Still, IMO our weakest units on our team are WR and DLine. Once we can get some pass rush and offensive weapons, we are as good as any NFC west team on paper…Am I wrong?
I really think the Selvie/Long combo will give us a pass rush
Everything I have seen from Long says we are about to watch a breakout season. Selvie has been really impressive. Grant looks really good along side Animal and Diggs. I really think the front D line will suprise this year. The front of the secondary looks good but I am a little worried about the depth there. WR is a big issue and even though our 2nd and 3rd string RB’s looked fine this last game I am still not quite convinced. I would say WR and RB are my top concerns with defensive secondary coming in close behind.
quote: "our 2nd and 3rd string RB’s looked fine this last game I am still not quite convinced."
You are very right to be concerned with these guys. Jackson needed a Westbrook, but we’ve left him with much much less. We’re gonna kill this 27 year old workhorse long before his time.
quote: "Still, IMO our weakest units on our team are WR and DLine."
Eggzactly right. But we’re also sick puppies at b/u RB. We’ll get Jackson killed with the clowns we have now.
I tend to agree with the trade of a 2nd rdr though....
if he back off those ridiculous salary demands. He is good – but 5 yrs/$50M good? He hasn’t even caught for more than 68 rec in a year (and that was only his 2nd yr with more than 50).
I have been advocating a WR in the 1st next year with the plethora of expected talent at the position. But if you get VJax for a 2nd – then the focus can shift to Clayborn or another D beast for the pick.
I should be working right now...
and whatever contract he signs better have some "behavior clause"
as he has 1 strike and suspension under his belt now for substance abuse policy.
I should be working right now...
VJax question
because I’ve seen it reported diferently a couple of times….
He has a 3 game suspension for personal conduct/substance abuse but could also receive an auto 3 game suspension if he doesn’t sign his tender by 9/4 (rapidly approaching).
Now I have read that it would require a total of 6 gamess missed and I have also read that the 2 suspension can be run concurrent to each other making it still only three. Anyone know the actual deal?
I don’t think the Rams are gonna trade for him but I am curious at how the suspensions work.
I should be working right now...
I don't think anyone, including the league,
knows the answer right now. One guess I saw was that if he reports to his team by Sept. 4, the two will run concurrently. If he reports after that date, they will run consecutively, meaning he would miss 6 weeks.I guess Sept. 4 is the date since that’s the final cut down date and the setting of the initial 53 man rosters.
Jackson would be a big upgrade over Robinson but not a replacement for Avery, which is what they lack
This crew now lacks a legit burner. Yes he could step right in for LRob but I wouldn’t trade a pick for him right now. I would for a younger Steve Smith-type guy who could do Avery’s job, but then again he’d have to be young like Avery. In other words, I’d fill a hole but not upgrade a spot already filled, and age is a huge issue (for me anyway) when trading picks from a team like the Rams.
True
I think its important to realize where Donnie Avery should be lining up: The WR3 Position to create ridiculous speed mismatches between safeties (Think Az Zahir Hakim but Faster, Rams fans). Our WR1, especially in the NFC west (A division with physical corners), should be a big WR with solid hands, solid speed, and enough strength to fight off jams at the line. Like it or not, VJax DOES fit that description and would certainly succeed in the NFC West. With that said, I do not believe that VJax deserves 50 million with 30 guaranteed. Thats Andre Johnson money and last I checked, Jackson is NOT a top 3 WR in the NFL…Take it for what you will.
Danario
Danario Alexanander, as much potential as he does have to become that WR1 player some day, is not there yet. It will undoubtedly take him time to adjust to the NFL level. Prior to him not passing his physical for the draft, he wasn’t even ranked as a top 10 WR in the draft! (based on McShay’s rankings, I don’t value Kiper’s opinion at all). Also, speaking of perennially injured players, with 4 knee surgeries under his belt already, it is not probable that he becomes the WR we need. I pray that he does, but it just is not likely…
Mel kiper
Has been doing it far longer than Tod mcshit and honestly mcshit is a douchebag as well kiper has been the better judge of talent since mcshit came aboard. I’ve also met both of them (Kiper is a graduate of my High School and brought mcshay to a game) kiper pays more attention to detail. Mcshay sat there drinking a beer when one of our CBs was top 3 in the nation

C'mom...Mel Kiper's Past Words:
“I think Ryan Leaf is more mature than Drew Bledsoe, he’s very much a grown up 21 year old.”….“Wes Welker is not worth a second round pick. I don’t care how much you like his work ethic … he has done nothing to show a value that high”…."JaMarcus Russell’s gonna immediately energize that Raider Nation, that fanbase, that football team- on the practice field, in that locker room- three years from now you could be looking at a guy that’s certainly one of the elite top five quarterbacks in this league. You’re talking about a 2-3 year period once he’s under center. Look out because skill level that he has is certainly John Elway like."…..“He (Peyton Manning) isn’t John Elway, Dan Marino or Jim Kelly. A lot of these teams in the NFL are desperate for quarterbacks and he, along with Ryan Leaf, are the best out there.”
Kiper is a proven Failure. McShay’s boards the past few years have been much more accurate than “the Hair”’s….This could be another entire fan post. Haaa
C'mon guys. What good is a burner who's perennially injured??
How many games has Avery played in his 2 year career?
We saw what good he was in that very game. Avery was a big contributor.
Part of the Rams success vs. the Pats was Avery was blazing downfierld, snagging 2 balls for 48 yards, and another long ball on on the injury play that would have made him easily the game’s leading WR. They had to respect that and it opened things up for Hoomanawanui. And everyone else.
You saw the offense when they lacked a QB and deep threat last year, and you saw the difference last game when they had both those things (and more). Avery was playing like he was expected to play and yes it made a huge difference. Now they have no one to do that job.
by CoachConnors on Aug 28, 2010 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions
Precisely why we need to pony up some of those valuable 2011 low round draft picks and try to trade for somebody good.
The TO decision ain’t lookin’ too good right now.
i agree
It isn’t saying Avery was all pro material and the center of the teams universe. He isn’t a huge loss because he was magnificent. The problem is that we set our team up with “role players”. Avery’s role was to be the burner who could grab a long ball and blow past corners. Now that he’s injured we don’t have that speedster and that is concerning. He kept the defense having to spread themselves downfield which set up amendola hoom etc for short grabs with YAC.
Another interesting point..
about Avery is the stories that he “bulked up” this year and gained 10 lbs to be able to take the rigor of the NFL season.
Strengthening your quads (which makes you faster) relative to your hamstrings actually contributes to lower knee joint stability. This is a major cause of both pulled hamstrings and torn ACLs. That’s why dudes didn’t tear ACLs in the old days like they do now.
I think that’s interesting…although everyone does it and I"m not blaming anyone.

2009 season = 47 receptions for 589 yards???? He must've been hurt a helluva lot or something else is bad wrong.
'something else is bad wrong"
Pretty sure you were a Ram fan last year edChop so you do you really need that question answered?
Now I’m not saying Donnie was ever going to be “the man” in any offense but there was a whole lotta “bad wrong” stuff that took place.
I should be working right now...

don’t make me have flashbacks to last year. They are very unsettling

There is going to be a Strike in 2011
So Sure, lets put more money with guaranteed contracts on the roster for a year that won’t even be played. Is this kind of financial awareness not what we where bitching about with Zygmunt & Shaw? Not to mention the Jackson suspension and character issues.
SIUE. Favorite chant? We ARE DEPAUL! Mark Aguire!
I don't know alot about Jackson
why is he suspended the first three games?
Personal conduct
He got a 2nd DUI conviction. I think he could have appealed the suspension, but I don’t know if he still can.
I suspect that takes him outside of the 4 Pillars sought by the FO anyway.
ouch
yeah… pretty sure they frown upon that inside the four pillars club
Normally yes
But he isn’t known as a dressing room problem and is hard working. I believe he even plays (or played) special teams for the Chargers which I think show she isn’t a prima donna.
If the FO could be sure that he will abide by the laws of the land (financial penalties?), then I’d give him a pass on the four pillars.
