Although the Rams did win their preseason game against the Browns, the backup running backs were horrible. The combination of Kenneth Darby, Chris Ogbonnaya, and Keith Toston rushed for 45 yards on 25 attempts. The Rams looked very good on their opening drive with A.J. Feeley as quarterback and Steven Jackson as the running back. The Rams most definitely need Jackson for the regular season. Also for the sake of Sam Bradford. When Bradford was in with the other backups, the offense didn't move. I believe the Rams will hit the waiver wire for a running back. But one name comes to mind for a perfect running back option: Derrick Ward.
Derrick Ward was a member of the 2008 Giants running back trio with Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw while the Rams' head coach (Steve Spagnuolo) was still the defensive coordinator. The trio known as Wind (Ward), Earth (Jacobs), and Fire (Bradshaw) left the Giants with 3 solid running backs. After the season, Spags came to the Rams, and Ward signed for 4 years and $17 million with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ward had a really disappointing 2009 finishing with 409 yards and only 1 touchdown. Going into the 2010 season, Ward had already lost his job to the re-emerging Cadillac Williams. Now, it seems that Ward can be released according to Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune. In his second preseason game, Ward only rushed for 11 yards on 5 carries. The first game he rushed for 20 yards on 12 carries, and appeared visibly frustrated with his play. Kaufman also noted that "Kareem Huggins looks like the better running back." If he is released, he won't make anything near what he was scheduled on his deal with the Bucs .
I believe Derrick Ward would be a perfect fit for the St. Louis Rams. Coach Steve already knows of his ability while with the Giants. The Rams trio isn't really working out right now, and Ward can come cheap. Ward has the experience to step in if anything ever happened to Jackson. Ward could be a very good backup for Steven Jackson. The Rams could have another trio of running backs, as Wind (Ward), Earth (Jackson), and Fire (Darby/Ogbonnaya/Toston). Think about it he Derrick Ward does get released. Leave your comments.
- Btw, I love the Danario Alexander signing, poor Brooks Foster :(
