Give Gibson A Chance?

Via Rotoworld:
Brandon Gibson - WR

Aug. 21 - 1:10 am et
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch suggests that WR Brandon Gibson is on the Rams' roster bubble.
"He needs to make something happen," writes beat reporter Jim Thomas. Gibson flashed some ability down the stretch last year, but has been nicked up since OTAs and appears to be plummeting down the depth chart. At best, he's a fourth receiver behind Laurent Robinson, Donnie Avery, and Danny Amendola. And fourth receivers have to play special teams. Gibson doesn't. Source: St Louis Post-Dispatch

I don't know about you guys, buy I would be outraged if he got cut. Right now, here's how I see the Rams depth chart:

#1 Laurent Robinson

#2 Donnie Avery

Slot Danny Amendola (obviously very impressive and climbed up the charts quickly... the fact that he would no longer be needed as a returner because of Gilyard must have lit a fire under him)

#4 Mardy "Party" Gilyard

The rest of the bunch:

Keenan Burton - Has shown promise in camp, but it's only camp and he hasn't been healthy. It would be foolish to cut Gibson for a Hamstring injury  when Burton is always injured. Gibson has at least shown his worth on the field.

Brooks Foster - I'd prefer Foster on the team over all the other besides Gibson, he like Burton has had a good camp and they are impressed with him. It also helps that he holds the combines record for bench press by a WR(27 reps of 225lbs). A strong WR like Foster could, at the very least, come in handy blocking or on special teams and despite his last injury, he is not exactly injury prone.

Jordan Kent - Hmm, it's funny, yet another receiver said to be in the mix to make the final roster because he's have a good camp.

Brandon McCrae - Is there any WR not having a good camp? Well the healthy ones anyway. McCrae is still probably a practice squad candidate but you never know if he is playing as well as they've said.

Dominique Curry - Jackson said in the beginning of camp he was impressed with both McCrae and Curry(not knowing their names of course and just giving numbers). Curry's advantage is of course his size, which the Rams have little of, at 6-2 and 224 lbs, Curry, Kent, and McCrae could all be practice squad candidates, though

And finally: Brandon Gibson - Originally the end result of a deal that bothered some Rams when fan favorite, Will Witherspoon(imagine having him play Will for us now next to Itis), he shut me up averaging 4.25 catches and 43.5 yards a game the last 8 games of the season when he actually got playing time. Avery only averaged 3.125 in that time frame. His first game was his best(vs New Orleans with 7 receptions for 93 yards) but he certainly showed flashes. Gibson looked like a good sized receiver who could be a valuable asset in the passing game and again, he actually showed it on the field unlike many of theses other guys. All this happening with the problems on the O-Line and behind the center. Imagine if Bradford was throwing him the ball? It is too early to give up on this young kid in my opinion.

Who would get your 5 or 6 spots on the roster?

Things could get really interesting if the Rams were somehow fortunate enough to snag up Danario Alexander. Could the Rams actually consider 7 receivers, especially if Danario did come to the Rams? This could be a good problem to have, so long as they make the right decisions, and in my opinion, giving up Gibson would not be a good decision. Gibson will make his pre-season debut along with Mardy Gilyard in tonight's game versus the Browns. Hopefully they play well  and good luck to the both of them, though Gibson needs it more right now.

UPDATE: Foster waived... Danario Alexander signed... that makes things interesting.

I think this has to do with how the FO approaches the WR position

We saw last year they often rolled out only 4 or even 3 WRs on the 53-man roster. While that may have made sense for a Steven Jackson-centered offense, the Bradford era is about to begin when he takes over in the regular season. You can’t limit the roster down to 4 WRs for Bradford IMO. I say 6 WRs including Gibson, but I’m biased.
Van had a good write-up on this two weeks ago.

You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

This is why I was suprised with the WR pick in the Draft.

Burton should be gone in my opinion, but I really would like to see more out of Foster before he gets let go.

At the end of the day I think this is a good problem to have, but we really need these guys to stay healthy and step it up this year. Go Rams!!!

Should've had another option...

Who cares?

Not one of those guys is a difference maker! Six for one guy and one half dozen for all the others. Once we get a #1 (V. Jackson or Danario) then our WR corps will be pretty good…that’ll move everyone down one rung on the ladder and this guy will be cut anyway.

Who cares works

A 1-15 team can’t afford to keep favorites. They need to Identify the best or at least the ones that will be the most productive in their system.

None of our WRs

looked good tonight. Robinson and Avery couldn’t get open and Gilyard dropped every pass thrown to him. I don’t know what’s going on, but something has to change or we’ve got no chance.

Was it the WR’s or the QB’s? From what I heard the QBs(with the exception of Feeley surprisingly) played very poorly. I didn’t get to watch the game tho seeing as I live in Connecticut, hard to get a game here ever even on NFL Ticket, so I can’t say exactly whose fault it was… had to follow online

It was actually the running back situation.

Last year it was injuries and the quarterbacking, but in this preseason I think it’s just the fact that without Big Steve, defenses are making sure they don’t let us pass with success. They know that they can stock up to stop the pass because we sure as hell aren’t going to beat them with the run. When we have Steven Jackson in the regular season, you’ll be able to see our receivers play well. Avery is a good receiver, it’s just that Shurmur is awful at using him (remember ’08 when Avery was a beast?). Robinson had 11 first downs on just 13 catches last year before an injury, and Amendola played very well at the end of last season.

If this becomes a trend in the regular season, start worrying.

After last year

I’m not too attached to anyone either. I like Robinson, Amendola, maybe Gibson, maybe McRae, maybe Curry, maybe get someone who I haven’t watched fail to light anyone up.
Gilyard better learn how to catch or out the door he goes. Burton I lost interest in last year. And Avery needs to put up or leave this year. Room needs to be made for performers by way of non-performers.

I was on the cut Burton wagon earlier

But he has probably been the best WR in preseason and camp so far.

We have too many receivers. There isn't a single receiver that I dislike.

I like Burton a lot, Gibson is one of my favorite guys on the team, Kent is one of my favorites on the team, and the undrafted rookies seem like good guys. Gibson and Burton both showed flashes of good receiving last season, Kent was a good special teams guy, and Curry impressed me against the Browns. However, only one of these guys can make the team, possibly none if Danario Alexander gets into the fold. If Alexander were to be signed, I would expect him to make the team along with maybe Brandon Gibson or Burton. I don’t see Kent, Curry, or McRae making the team. If Alexander doesn’t sign, it’s up to management to decide if they want Gibson and Burton, or only one of them.

Agreed

Ya I feel pretty much the same way. I dont feel Kent, McCrae or Curry should be anything more than practice squad guys though. But ya we have a lot of good depth, it would just be nice if one of them was a #1 type WR or even an above average #2. But Avery has the potential to be a very good #2… LRobs has the same if he can stay healthy… Gibson showed flashes that he could also be that guy and Mardy is an ideal slot guy. I kind of wish Danny wasn’t playing so well because he could make the decision easier.

Ideally I would have liked these guys on the roster going into the season

Robinson
Avery
Gilyard
Gibson
Alexander (if we are fortunate enough to sign him)

then I think it’s a tough choice but I would have picked Foster for that last spot for reasons above. Burton I’m pretty much done with and despite his great camp he still doesn’t have the potential the other guys do in my eyes and who knows if he can stay healthy. And again.. the other 3 guys should b practice squad at best.

Danny however is a shoe in to make the team it seems so hopefully its

Robinson
Avery
Amendola
Gilyard
Alexander
and I’d like Gibson to get that last spot. I’d love if if Foster could be a practice squad guy but oh well. We will see I guess. I’m not on Burton’s bandwagon right now, especially if it means cutting Gibson

Danario A Ram

Now that he’s a Ram I definitely hope Gibson stays over Burton

by JimmyP55 on Aug 22, 2010 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Foster is gone and Gibson can't get healthy.

They may end up having to put Gibson on IR if he can’t get well enough to get on the field. And none of it will matter if Shurmur doesn’t start calling some longer pass plays.

The Play Calling Needs to Change...

…I got tired of the Cleveland Browns announcer repeatedly mentioning that he was not impressed with the play selections by the Rams offense. So far it seems that the Rams top receiving target is Hoomanawanui. I don’t know if it’s because we don’t have confidence in our line to give our QB’s time to drop back and throw deep, if our receivers are just not good enough to get any decent separation or if it’s just the way of the West Coast Offense to constantly throw quick outs to our tight ends and running backs. Before this season started, I figured our receiving depth chart would look like this:

L. Robinson
Brandon Gibson
Donnie Avery
Mardy Gilyard
Danny Amendola
Keenan Burton

You may question me as to why Gibson is listed ahead of Avery but as far as production, in the few games that Gibson played, I feel he outperformed Avery. Things may look different now with Gibson hurt and not able to contribute during preseason.

Now that Danario Alexander, Jordan Kent, Dominique Curry are in the mix and Brooks Foster is gone I am not sure how it’s gonna pan out. I’m hoping Alexander can impress enough to first of all make the club and then get in the top four of the rotation. It looks like Dominique Curry is going to give Brandon Gibson a run for his money.
