Random Ramsdom, Sunday 8-15: Preseason is Here (0-1)

Random_ramsdom_medium

Well, as VanRam pointed out, we've started the preseason 0-1 with a 28-7 whacking courtesy of the Vikings. While we lost the game, there were some positives to emerge. Chris Long was solid, Larry Grant seriously stepped up, George Selvie showed some spark, and Danny Amendola (even though he did fumble) gave us our only TD of the night on a sweet punt return.

What about Bradford? Well, his first series he looked really sharp but unfortunately due to a porous offensive line, he barely had enough time to take the snap much less look down the field during the remainder of his presence. His final numbers, 6-13 for 57 yds, sacked 4x and beat up in general. The good news? His shoulder took some shots and held up nicely.

Side Note: I honestly can't remember a Rams O-Line that played that poorly in my 27 years of Rams fan realm. Jason Smith really struggled. And what's with the O-Line shuffle? Fraley at Center? Jason Brown at LG? Huh?! Hopefully things will get better as the preseason progresses.

OK, on with the links...

That's about it for today.. GO RAMS

(3k's NFC West notes)

 - Seattle and Arizona were in action last night as well.  Write-ups come from Field Gulls on the winners and losers in the 'Hags' 20-18 victory and from Revenge of the Birds who covered the risers and fallers from their 19-6 win over Houston.

 - San Fran plays in Indy this afternoon.  Could be a fun preseason game...for a half.

Go Rams - holler.

The OL was very bad but so was the DL and the DB's

I think we need some pass rushers fast, we should make SD an offer for S.Merriman If were giving teams all day to pass it wont mater who we have back there covering, and the most bothersome of all is Shurmurs play calling again, this guys sucks no two ways about it,we will never win with Shurmur and I put this pathetic OL on him too ,this team better make some changes fast and I mean get a OFC that can win football games personally after today I would have given him his walking papers,I don’t need to see any more of this to know were it will lead us,same shit all last year he really frigging sucks

You have all been so happy with our front office this year defending there every move

carneros you still wana tell me how many better then average players we have and how were not USAF quality? we suck buddy ,and if I have learned one thing its that the fish stinks from the HEAD first,RamChop is the only one with some vision that is realistic but he gets criticized by most of you ,that’s because you all know so much lol I have one thing to say to all you believers in the Devaney regime ,you will be crying bitter tears this year and left with lost hopes again,I don’t wana say it but I told you so not once but many times, another week like this and they wont be able to give tickets away,They have one move left that is to get rid of Shurmur might save there ass for now,This team is a rehabilitation center for unable players the laughing stock of the NFL

It was the first preseason game

How many teams open it up and are ready to go when they are in the rebuilding stage that we are in the first preseason game?

These preseason games are there to critique weaknesses not show your hand too soon. Hey, there’s a lot to critique but nobody ever thought that we were the finished product just yet.

The OL concerned me last night, but Smith has just returned from injury and Saffold was making his debut. They’re both effectively rookies. They will improve and give the QB chance to look further than just in front of his face. We have to give them some time. Brown and Fraley looked okay inside, just going to show that we just need rookie development from our OT’s. That shouldn’t surprise anyone and at least last night proved Bradford is not made of glass.

With the players coming in and those that were missing, when the 1st team was out there we were 14-7. That isn’t so bad, and the final score just proves is what the world and his wife already knew; we don’t have the same level of depth as the Vikings.

By the time Sept 12th comes along we will be better.

As for getting rid of Shurmur, I’m not aware of a glut of experienced and quality OC’s out there so just who would you replace him with at this stage of the season? If we show no real improvement in scoring and player development by the end of the year then give him the axe. But after the 1st preseason game with 2 new QB’s and two rookie OT’s atop the depth chart? Do me a favour.

Nonono

You meant Air Force. Hahahahaha

You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

I think its a little soon to say all that.

The O-line sucked, and the secondary sucked. The Run D looked great, and the offense couldn’t be judged. The secondary didn’t have any starters really. Atogwe started but I don’t know how long he played. The O-line was also missing Jacob Bell, and for some reason Brown wasn’t playing Center. A lot of the sacks were miscommunication but that did suck horribly by the O-line. They will improve, mainly because they can’t do any worse. Steven Jackson wasn’t playing either, so our run game can’t be judged. The O-line was the only thing I really felt bad about during that game.

The Run defense did play well but the pass rush was non existent

I did not judge our running game because S. J. was not playing and the DB’s even if they were not the starting unit did suck bad ,after Danny A. fumble we fell apart reminded of last years team what a let down, you would think priority would be protection for Bradford in this game to give him a solid start, well Shurmur is responsible for the offense he should be held accountable for another dismal showing OL WR;s picking up the blitz nothing was working right this one guy will kill us agian this year with his play calling ,mark my words we wont win with him

At least next week’s game is against the Browns. :P

by Abrantes on Aug 15, 2010 10:48 AM CDT reply actions

Preseason performance means next to nothing. See the Rams’ 3-1 record in last year’s preseason for evidence. Beating the Packers or not, their pass rush is decidedly not as strong as the Vikings, so we should at least get a better look at Bradford as he eases in.

by Abrantes on Aug 15, 2010 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

But we're talking about the backups

Do you really know the Vikings’ and Browns’ backup defensive lines well enough to make that statement? I sure don’t.

Just going by yestersday’s performances by both teams, really. Unless the Pack’s backup OL is simply a lot better than I give him credit for, the Browns’ backups didn’t give me much reason to fear them. There’s always the chance that the Rams’ OL make them look like world-beaters, but I’m a glass-half-full guy.

by Abrantes on Aug 15, 2010 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess

I just think you have do look at more than just one performance. But fair point on the Browns’ backups. And I hate the glass half full/half empty stuff. I always like the realist way of describing it: you can call it either, but the point is, I need more water.

don't forget that

the packers o-line might have even been worse than ours last season. so back-ups don’t help their case much.

Bulaga was a perfect pick for them

and they’ve gotten healthier since last year. Rodgers shouldn’t see as much pressure this year and he was pretty damn good last year.

Yes Rodgers did play well but was banged up much of the year

And thats just what we want to avoid with Bradford I hope we can put out a better OL then the PAC last year

by rams210 on Aug 15, 2010 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

he was pretty damn amazing.

he still needs to get rid of the ball faster so until he does that, he will always see quite a bit of pressure.

And more then the win over the Packers I count the points they scored

we havent scored 27 points in years preseason or regular season and the Packers have a better defense then we do,but your optimistic lol well thats nice to see

by rams210 on Aug 15, 2010 12:01 PM CDT reply actions

Trying to account for points scored or not in matchups against second or third stringers is absolutely meaningless in the big picture, given how those situations won’t be replicated when the games matter. That’s what I’m saying. But you’re pessimistic, so there’s always that.

Also: Really, our rookies sucked? The only one that fell flat on his face was Saffold. Bradford looked fine, as did Murphy while he was in, and Selvie played great. No need to sweep everything under blanket statements. Saying ‘case closed’ after the first preseason game is beyond silly.

by Abrantes on Aug 15, 2010 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

With Shurmurs offense we scored 0 points my friend our only points came from a return punt

Mini had second and third stringers in too why did we not score?regardless of what you think of the Browns they put 27 points on the board all I say is don’t underestimate them and think we have a easy win coming up
