Rams training camp notes, 7/29: Saffold working at LT

The St. Louis Rams had their first full day of training camp...sort of. Rookies and assorted veterans were on hand for two practices today, here's a round up of what happened.

  • Rodger Saffold worked at the LT spot. Don't get your knickers in a bunch, just yesterday Pat Shurmur said that he'll be a RT. 48 hours ago he was a RG.
  • Saffold was filling in for Jason Smith, who is still limited.
  • It was a typical August day in MO, i.e. it was damn hot and humid. Still, Spagnuolo seemed pleased with the way things went and some of the guys recovering from injuries made it through just fine this a.m.
  • Steven Jackson and OJ Atogwe were the only Rams players coming back from injuries that did not practice today.
  • CB Bradley Fletcher looked like he was back at full speed. That's great news. The Rams really, really need Fletcher to pick up where he left off last season. Solid play from the secondary will help the pass rush.
  • TE Daniel Fells looked good to go too.
A report from Alex Marvez of Fox Sports has some good insight into the Rams team mentality this year. Head coach Steve Spagnuolo is expecting his players to focus on three things: "demand, compete and finish." To stoke the competitive fires, the team is making it inescapable. Keeping score in seven-on-seven, weightlifting contests and even a pingpong table. Here's Spags:

"We were trying to create as much of a competitive atmosphere as we could. We’ll carry that right into training camp. That’s what your good teams and very special players do. Michael Jordan, Larry Bird … Tiger Woods, he probably competes at everything, not just golf.  That was kind of my message to (the players) – have that mindset in everything you do. It will make us all better."

Even threw in a Tiger Woods joke...props to the head coach!

All reporters are saying his deal will be done by tomorrow

So he can “[really start his NFL career this weekend.]”

Are you serious?

Bradford should be in camp from day one ,there job is to do every thing and make that happen signing him on time is so very important and its totally on the FO.They just missed the first deadline that Devaney had set jul 29

by rams210 on Jul 29, 2010 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Except Billy Devaney isn't in charge of the money, Demoff is

And I’m pretty sure Kevin Demoff has more authority than Billy Devaney. So Devaney can’t just take his job away from him.
Just settle down, nothing big is really going on now. He’s probably only going to miss 1 more day at the most.
I think he can come back from missing 2 days.

My prediction is still alive:

Bradford will make it into the first full afternoon practice (includes veterans). He will miss the morning practice.

Where is he? OK or Missou?

i would guess he's still hangin' out in norman with his folks.

takes but a couple hours to get his ass here on a plane from there. i’m sure he’s all packed up just waiting for a phone call from mr condon. dude is probably anxious as hell.

by stlcardinalsfang on Jul 29, 2010 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

doesn't really matter.

though i guess if he was in st louis it would be because of an imminent deal.

by stlcardinalsfang on Jul 29, 2010 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

And I just figured out where I read it

And it was in the form of a question. He may still be in Norman. And what you said is what I was hoping. You’d think he’d want to be here anyway, he’s going to have to be eventually. A lot of reporters are saying he’ll be signed by tomorrow, but I don’t know if it’ll be done before practice tomorrow. And the Ram’s website says there is only one practice tomorrow from 8:15-9:30. So I’m guessing he’ll be in camp by Saturday.

In rams210's defense,

the deal should’ve been done before the draft, but I’ve been happy with the way KD has handled the contracts and have all the faith in the world that SB will be here when the vets take the practice field.

Yes I have been happy too until now but this is the one were all waiting for

For me this has no excuse I don’t care if you have to start negotiating a month early get the dam deal done before camp

as long as he's wrapped up by saturday

then i’m fine. that’s when the real football starts :)

This constant changing positions (or musical chairs) rates 5 full Ritchie Heads.

Why would Greco be at Center or Saffold at LT or G? I guess Bradford’s big enough to play LB too. Reminds me of Jr. High fb where we all had to play offense and defense.

by RamChop on Jul 30, 2010 10:37 AM CDT reply actions

Well Saffold did play LT in college

And he’s not playing G. He’s playing RT and LT.

Onubon > Gates

by Carneros on Jul 30, 2010 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Saffold should look better at LT than RT

Why wouldn’t he?
I hope they just go with the best guy at LT, regardless of contract and draft position. I don’t know if Saffold could beat out Smith at this point though. Kinda doubt it, just based on his inexperience.

by CoachConnors on Aug 6, 2010 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

lol RamChop I felt the same way but I'm sure every one will be in position by the first week of preseason

I feel good about Saffold since he seems to be able to play all the spots,I just hope Smith can live up to his #1 second player over all and 33 mill guarantee money he got
