Rams agree "in principle" with Rodger Saffold (updated)
The St. Louis Rams have reached an "agreement in principle" with their second round pick OT Rodger Saffold today.
Terms have yet to be announced, but it's fairly clear what the deal will be based on the slots. Saffold should get a four-year worth around $5.7 million with just a shade under $4 million guaranteed.
The question now is what position Saffold will play. There was some talk yesterday of him getting more work at guard.
One contract left to go...
(3k note: NFP is reporting it's a $6.3m deal with just under $3.9 guaranteed.)
Update #2: Pat Shurmur says that Saffold will be playing RT.

Learning, um, okay
I’m all for Saffold learning new positions and cross training, but he has been paid big bucks. Time to spend time at RT.
I would prefer that Saffold play at the tackle position.
He played there in college, he has limited experience at guard, and I think he would perform better at the tackle position. Goldberg sucks at both positions, so I think we should just start him at RG for this year until we can go and get somebody good.
If you give a man a fish and he'll stink up the whole town. However, give a man a fishing rod and he'll poke your eye out.

heh
I must have been adding this as you posted. Double tapping for the good of the community…
You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

He also earns an extra $250,000
If he makes Pro Bowl or wins Rookie of the Year. So hopefully we’re paying him 500,000 more at the end of this year.

Protecting our future....
My guess is that if Saffold is being asked to play guard, the thinking by Spags is a means-to-an-end. They might feel like Saffold will transition into the NFL with less carnage to our $50MM man by temporarily starting on the interior line and blasting people versus having to worry about operating in space. Once he gets his legs underneath him and gets used to the speed of the game, they will transition him to the RT, which is where he will earn his money by protecting our entire franchise on a snap-by-snap basis.
I was more on board with him starting at Guard for this season when we still had Barron
Now, he’s probably our best option at RT, unless Trautwein really shows something and earns the job. Goldberg didn’t too good a job at either G or T last year.

Thanks Goodness...
he’s playing the position he was drafted to play. I’m tired of all of the position switching.
