SJ best RB in the NFL?

After several heated debates with several people I thought it'd be a good time to gage public opinion and see if I am just overly bias or I am definitely speaking truth.

I believe SJ is the best RB in the NFL hands down for what he does with so little.

However I always get greeted with guffaws and responses that are intended to belittle my football knowledge.

Everyone else seems to rate AP, CJ or even MJD higher than SJ.

It is evident that they all run with better O Lines and supporting casts and are not greeted by 8 in the box every play. It is also evident that despite this SJ ran for the most yards in the NFC.

Why is it that people neglect to recognise SJ's dominance as a Running Back?

This poll is merely to see if other Rams fans can actually state how any other back in the NFL is better than Steven Jackson.

Please vote and justify your vote in the comment box. Thank You :)

Steven Jackson is definitely better than AP

No one around the league will give him credit for it, but I believe that if he played on the Vikings he would put up better numbers than AP. I don’t know if he’d put up 2k yards in Tennessee, but I know I’d rather be a LB trying to tackle Chris Johnson than a LB trying to tackle Steven Jackson. Tennessee had one of the best O-lines in the league too, and something that resembled a passing game, unlike us. So I still think SJ is better than CJ2K, but its close.

I'm not sure he is the best

because they are all in different situations at each team, and to be fair the other players you mention are damn good. However, it is difficult to see any of the others would have exceeded the numbers that SJax prodcued last year if they were in the same situation as him.

With the situation we are in right now there is no-one else I’d rather have than SJax. On that basis, I rate him the best.

My heart says S-Jax...

…but there’s a guy that broke Marshall’s record last year. I voted for S-Jax, but what Chris Johnson did last year was silly.

S-Jax is DEFINITELY better than Peterson though. Dude had Brett Favre to take the heat off of him and still didn’t have more yards than Steven in more games played.

Plus, Steven doesn’t cough up the rock (only 2 to Peterson’s 7) despite getting pounded by the other team in each game.

I’ll take any Peterson fan up on that one. A Titans fan not so much.

Dude, I'm with you.

But at the same time, does hypothetical thought still make up the nearly 771 yard difference in Yards from Scrimmage?

I’m a big believer in “stats lie.” But when the difference is that big, I can’t help but concede. The Titans are not a very talented offensive team, so we can’t use the Viking example that we can use on Peterson.

Their best receiver was a dude named Kenny Britt who racked up a whopping 701 yards total. Their best QB didn’t even start the season and his best rating was an 82.3.

To put that in perspective, that rating was good for 18th in the league, and their total passing yardage of 189.4 per game was good for 23rd in the league. Britt’s totals are barely over 100 yards more than Avery.

I respect what S-Jax did more than anyone (or as much as any Rams fan could), but their offense as whole outside of Chris Johnson wasn’t very good, and like I said, hypothetical situations still can’t make up for the 771 yard difference in my mind. Especially when the talent around Johnson wasn’t that much better than S-Jax’s help.

As bad as I’d like to give it to my boy, I’d say it goes:

1. Chris Johnson
2. Steven Jackson
3. Adrian Peterson
4. Maurice Jones-Drew

Okay, you got me...lol

Maybe Jax wouldn’t hit 2500+ total yards playing for the Titans, but I don’t believe CJ would’ve come anywhere near those numbers playing for us either.

Yeah I mean, he beat a record that I thought was untouchable.

Marshall’s epic scrimmage record. At that point, I was like “dammit, ok, S-Jax you’re a hell of a second place player.”

You’re right though, 2500 on the Rams means you’re literally a Mythologic Greek creature.

I voted for SJ,

and the only reasons why the others get more credit is because the TD numbers and national coverage for being on better teams. Put any of them on the Rams last year and none of them would’ve had the number Jax had. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say he’ll prove his worth again this year. Most of todays opinions are based from fantasy football, so when Jax get his 1000+ yards along with 11 TDs this year, his name will be in the mix again.

I voted Jackson

I usually don’t let bias decide these things but at the time I’m voting, I’m really thinking how hard getting 1400 yards was with everyone keying on him.

If we are talking about the "current" overall best,

I have to say CJ, MJD or Rice. IMHO, SJ just does not seem to have the same “breakaway” speed to bring it to the house as those three.
If you’re talking about power running back, then I do believe SJ is the best.

by RBramfan on Jul 28, 2010 9:46 AM CDT reply actions

Interchange each RB on their respective teams ...

and I’ll bet SJ comes out consistently on top. His size/speed/attitude are second to none. Sure he’s not as fast as CJ, but he’s the entire package.

Put ANY of those others on the Rams and they don’t perform as well as SJ did.

I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.

The only player that can reasonably be seen as better than SJ39 is Chris Johnson.

There is no denying that CJ28 is the most explosive player in the NFL and can win his team ballgames single-handedly almost. However, Adrian Peterson is a joke. He loses too many fumbles, and he doesn’t even gain that many yards despite the fact that the other team has to prepare for a good passing game. If he were on the Rams and SJ were on the Vikings, AP would gain about 800 yards, SJ would get about 1800.

If you give a man a fish and he'll stink up the whole town. However, give a man a fishing rod and he'll poke your eye out.

As another teams fan who lives in St. Louis and cheers for the Rams (except when they play the Dolphins),

in my opinion, the only back that I would rate higher than Jackson would be Chris Johnson. What he did last year was pretty epic and something I never thought I would see. But Jackson is definitely better than AP, as has been mentioned, Jackson doesn’t fumble the ball nearly as much and yet with a worse offensive line to help him and a worse QB to help take pressure off him, he still beat Peterson on yards.

I’ve seen the skill that Jackson has and know how good of a back he is. I’ve often wondered what kind of monster numbers he would put up if he had a stronger OL to help him. I would rate Jackson as the #2 back in the NFL.
