RAMS SAY NO THANKS TO TERRELL OWENS

"Cross the St. Louis Rams for those interested in Terrell Owens.

According to league sources, the Rams have decided to take a pass in their pursuit of the free agent wide receiver, FOXSports.com has learned.

Reports over the weekend suggested that the team had intensified their efforts for Owens and that the team could make an offer as early as today. However, that was premature as team brass met this morning on the matter and decided to go in a different direction."

Glazer, Jay. "Rams decide to ignore T.O."

No problem

Didn’t see that you had already posted it and thought it would be a good post. It just seemed that you coming off a little smug in your comment. So that is why I replied. As far as the quotations go, I will admit I should have used the quotation. Didn’t think it was big deal, but I will do it in the future. Thanks

There we go.

Used quotation and even cited in MLA. Hope that is ok because I hate citing in APA.

Not a big surprise

I was confused when I heard we were considering signing him. The only reason I would have been on board with it was if the coaches believed he would actually help mentor the young receivers and make things easier for Bradford. But he could just as easily (as his reputation shows) have made things harder on Bradford, and that is probably not worth the risk.

I am guessing drafting Bradford.

It is funny that Bradford has not signed yet is nowhere in the media now that the T.O. story popped up.

by crashoveride01 on Jul 26, 2010 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Me?... Yeah

I never liked the idea of T.O. being on the team. I think there is a reason why so many teams have passed on signing him and that he still is a free agent. I really don’t know that much about Danario but I like the idea someone else stated earlier. Sign Danario as undrafted and see what he can do in Preseason. If he works out great, if not there is not risk for the team.

by crashoveride01 on Jul 26, 2010 4:53 PM CDT reply actions

I wasn't fussed either way with T.O

But it always seemed like one of those situations where if he had a choice of the Rams or pretty much any of the other teams he wouldn’t join the Rams. We helped draw out the Bengals interest. I could see the arguements both for and against signing him but i have to say i would have been a little uneasy about a T.O led group of recievers. I couldn’t give you a logical reason as to why it was just one of those wierd senses of foreboding i had that it’d all end in disaster. Anyway onwards and upwards (hopefully) GO Rams!

by Stonedtodeath on Jul 26, 2010 5:33 PM CDT reply actions

Uh huh.

Aww it’s too bad that Sproles got picked back up by the Chargers we were going to have him in for a meeting. We didn’t trade our second round pick because we would have slid back too far (notice no mention of who they could have picked up in the trade down). It’s the ownership situation that’s keeping us down. I guess T.O. was too old will be the next one! Sick of the excuses!

Time to go for Danario Alexander with all resources.

If you give a man a fish and he'll stink up the whole town. However, give a man a fishing rod and he'll poke your eye out.

if he can stay healthy I think he has #1 WR upside

unfortunately I don’t think he can stay healthy.

Still, almost no risk in signing him so why not.

Patience....

My two cents….

- Our strategy is to rebuild for the future. In order to do this properly, we need to be willing to sacrafice a couple wins now in order to receive multiples of that in the future.
- Part of the rebuilding process is positioning your assets so they can develop. 20 something’s develop the quickest from “learning by doing” (i.e. maximizing their reps).
- In order to rebuild, youthful players are a priority and we should jettison the concept of signing a free agent in their mid-30’s.
- If we had an incumbent 30 something WR to offer positional leadership, that would be great, but we don’t (having jettisoned Bruce and Holt in order to pursue this rebuilding plan). We are all a function of our environment/experiences and Owens isn’t going to change at 36 – He’s not the leader our impressionable WR’s and QB need.
- In order to give a rebuilding strategy a chance, it is a multi-year commitment. There are no quick fixes….And any attempt at quick fixes are most likley going to negatively impact the development of your youth/long-term plan.

Owens is one of those sexy ideas when it is on paper, but has a ton of hair on it in reality. Best decision all year to walk away from this one.

Making aggressive moves may be the only way to keep their jobs!

Very well written. However, do you really think this coaching staff and GM have 2-3 more years before they are kicked to the curb? Not a chance. They have two years under their belt and if they don’t show major improvement this year they will be on the hotseat for 2011. Coaches don’t get 5-6 years anymore. The average coach gets 2-3 years to turn it around and thats it.(Mangini, Crennel, Marinelli, Edwards, Linehan, Kiffen, Mora, Green, Nolan….)<<<Proof is in the puddin’!

2 drafts, 2 free agent periods is what we are talking about. They have had almost two offseasons to add good players and make major improvements. In my eyes they have not done so. If Bradford does well, it may help win the 2-4 games that experts have been talking about. That is a very slight improvement and one that may be attributed to having the easiest schedule in pro football. The offseason is where talent is added and teams are made better, the regular season is for the end product. I’m sorry I should have been more clear and it should read “They have two offseasons under their belt and if…”

I think they get at least one more offseason.

The first offseason was mostly getting rid of old players and this one was very restricted by the free agency rules this year. So they’ve basically had 1 FA and two drafts. If they’re not around .500 after 2011 then maybe its time to change management, but I don’t think its really that helpful to keep changing management.

by Carneros on Jul 27, 2010 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree that they have till 2011 to get us to .500 but I think there were plenty of players that we flat out just missed the bus on this off season. Trades were made during the draft and we had the biggest prize of all (the first pick in each round). We just haven’t been aggressive at all. Like I have mentioned in past posts, just watch Detroit, Cleveland and the Raiders they will improve a lot in a short time. Another example would be the Jets, all of these teams have shown urgency and been aggressive when it comes to trades and free agency. In my opinion they also drafted better than we did minus Bradford. I also agree that changing management every 3-4 years isn’t a good thing but, just like in the Bulger situation; if a player/management doesn’t perform don’t reward them with a new contract and keep them around. Kindly show them the door.

You're charging them an offseason without seeing the results during the season.

That doesn’t make any sense.

… and I can’t think of many free agents this offseason that I wanted the Rams to pick up.

Certainly not Peppers or TO.

I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.

by Midasknight on Jul 28, 2010 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure how many times I have to list the names of the players that were available or that became available during the offseason. It was a pretty impressive list! I will name a few just off of the top of my head that are eons better than anyone we have Back up RB’s L.Johnson, L. Washington, T. Jones, J Fargas, B Westbrook, C. Taylor M. Lynch and so on…WR’s Santonio Holmes, Antonio Bryant, Brandon Marshall, A. Boldin…TE T. Scheffler, Ben Watson….and these guys are just a few of them. And Peppers is probably the most dominant DE in the NFL, why wouldn’t you want him?

by Everett 11 on Jul 28, 2010 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions

And I have yet to see any “expert” predict more than 3 possibly 4 wins. That is not much of an improvement considering we have the weakest schedule in the NFL. Again if they win 5-7 games I will be happy to say “Yay they are heading in the right direction” and " I was wrong". like Mike Sando said, he doesn’t see much in the way of improvement for this year, maybe worse. Go Rams!

by Everett 11 on Jul 28, 2010 7:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll bet cash...

the reason the Rams walked away from T.O. was because of his agent using the Rams as a bargaining chip with the Bengals. If T.O. really wanted to play for the Rams he’d be here. Spags and Devaney aren’t crazy, they need to show some improvement on this team this season or the brooms will be out to sweep them out at the end of the next one. Theres no other reason why it took them this long to cross of T.O. as an option if the four pillars were really the same as they were last year.
