Isaac Bruce to retire a Ram

The man whose name is synonymous with the airborne attack of the Greatest Show on Turf has been acquired by his old team, the St. Louis Rams, so that he can retire in the Golden Horns.

Bruce and the Rams will hold a press conference on Wed., June 9 at 12:30 p.m.

A second round pick in 1994, Bruce was with the Rams through good times and bad, moving from LA to STL, before the cold hard facts of business put him out there as a free agent for the hated 49ers to sign. In hindsight, that wasn't such a great move for a team that could have used the receiving help in the two seasons since parting ways.

It's a classy move by an organization that took some heat, mostly undeserved, for its handling of history.

A look back at Bruce's career with the Rams

Memo to the Rams PR office: Probably should have announced this at a time NOT other than the day Apple announced the new iPhone 4.

Without question

Ike was my favorite Ram for a long time. I’ll never forget reading about his first game in which his first NFL reception was a TD. I’ll also never forget how badly he was jobbed after the ’95 season in which he recorded the second most yards by a receiver in a single season and the most receptions ever for a WR under 25…and was selected as an alternate for the Pro Bowl.
The Rev was a phenomenal football player, and a great man. An easy first ballot HOFer, and a deserving one. Glad to see him head out with the Rams.

You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

He was a great player for a long time.

Best of luck to him in whatever he decides to do now.

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.

Hopefully

this also shows our current WRs what we’re looking for. Fantastic player, and class act.

THIS year's the year. I hope....

it also shows them that if they can become better players that they can be honored just like Bruce. Hopefully will be able to do this with Holt when he retires also.

He was the glue that held this franchise together before 1999.

The blocked kick and game-winning touchdown in Green Bay as the franchise’s first game as the St. Louis Rams set the tone for his career after the move. He just didn’t let up.

His reaction to the touchdown against the Vikings to start the first home playoff game in St. Louis football history is one of my favorite moments from that season. Well that, and his Super Bowl-winning touchdown catch.

He’s a class act, a Pro Bowler and hopefully some day a Hall of Famer who deserves his name on the ring of honor in the Edward Jones someday soon.

Forget Retirement!!!!!!!!!!

We need Bruce to play one more year for the Rams SERIOUSLY just to help out Bradford.

Ok I’m kidding but would it be so selfish to ask Bruce to play just one more season? I mean c’mon it’s BRUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ISSAC BRUCE

WELCOME HOME.
The RAMS did you wrong! But thanks for coming back and retiring a RAM. See in you CANTON in 5 years!

Nicely done, Rams

I’m glad now that the taking of individual pictures off the walls isn’t the only thing people can talk about when it comes to old Rams stars. (I believe the idea there was simply to promote team first thinking but it was perceived poorly by fans)…so this is a nice, feel-good kind of move.

And classy St. Louis fans calling out his name at his last game, even though he was there as a visiting 49er, something you might not see in every city. His 49er teammates convinced Singletary to start him, even though he had been inactive for 4 or 5 games before that.

All of this amounts to the way you want it to go, the way you hope it goes, for one of the truly good guys in the sport.

Suggestion to Rams Management

I have been to games where where they honor a player, or Chuck Berry or Jack Snow and it is before the game or at halftime when over half of the seats are empty. Please Rams – do this the right way – at the end of the third quarter when most fans are still in their seats. Bruce was a class act his whole career. Give him the biggest ovation we can, with a full stadium.

+1

I agree… end of third quarter is a great time to do this. and can we have him dress for 1 play (ok, that’s just wishing too much… after all, he might show up our WR’s with a touchdown).

I still wear my royal blue and gold 80 jersey

The Reverend Issac Bruce is a surefire Hall of Famer. Loved the attitude and work ethic.

I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.

His last game at the dome last year...

I pulled my signed Isaac Bruce bright gold and white jersey out of storage and wore that to the game.

I retired my blue and yellow bruce jersey when he signed with the 9ers.

Now I can unretire it and wear it again. Yay!!

We met him at a card signing

shortly after the Rams got here that just happened to be on his birthday. It was just in a little card shop and almost no one was there. He was very nice, smiled like he really meant it when we told him he was our favorite player, signed the card and thanked us for coming. You don’t find class acts like Ike very often. I’ll break out my old blue and yellow Bruce jersey if the Rams have a “day” for him during one of the home games this year.

From this interview with Devaney

here… (can’t get the exact link) for those who can’t figure it out it’s the one titled Billy Devaney talks about the decision to retire Isaac Bruce’s number? Sounds like the decision to retire his number is a done deal.

Also sounds like

there’s a chance Bruce gets added to the coaching staff somewhere
