Breaking News Rams Re-Sign Atogwe

This is great news for the Rams, Our secondary has improved with the resigning of OJ. Now lets just see how big of a contract he received.

I am happy we got OJ back now we have great depth at safety, and we have a great playmaker.

Sitting before a crowded auditorium at the St. Louis Botanical Gardens on Wednesday morning, Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo was asked point blank whether safety Oshiomogho Atogwe would be re-signed.

Spagnuolo gave a knowing smile, nodded and told the fan the Rams were "getting close" and to keep his fingers crossed. Little did anyone know just how close the Rams and Atogwe were to completing a deal.

Only a few hours after Spagnuolo answered the question, the Rams and Atogwe came to terms on a long term contract that will keep the team’s starting free safety in St. Louis for the foreseeable future.

"We are excited to have O.J. back in the fold," Spagnuolo said. "We were always hopeful for this result.  We look forward to having his leadership, character and talent back on our defense."

Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

"I’m at peace," Atogwe said. "I am very excited to be coming back. It was a long drawn out process but I believe it was supposed to be that way just so that the right decision could be made. I believe and am thankful that the right decision was made."

[Note by VanRam, 06/23/10 2:09 PM EDT ] It's said to be a five year deal that pays Atogwe about $5 million per season. That's reasonable, in my opinion. If that's the case, then Atogwe got a deal very similar to Green Bay S Nick Collins, who inked a five-year, $27 million deal with $14 million guaranteed.

That's my problem.

There’s Quinn and Clayborn at DE, but then there’s Jones, Green, Floyd and Baldwin at WR. I don’t know which one I want most.

Clayborn

I went to all Iowa home game and watched Clayborn run through teams o-line and destroy qbs. This kid is a animal!

Obviously it makes you a little bit biased toward Clayborn, right ?

GO HAWKS!

Very biased…But check him out this year definate top 10 pick in draft 2011!

biased

but clayborn is a phenomenal player… as a usc fan, i REALLY enjoyed watching the hawkeyes this year because of the clutch offense and great defense. i really want jonathan baldwin though… such a big receiver but such a dangerous deep threat as well. in two years, he has 75 receptions but 1515 yards… over 20 yards per reception for a 6’5 225 receiver, that’s amazing.

by douchiedude on Jun 23, 2010 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions

And he is agressive.

he goes up and gets the ball to make up for a poor throw.
He is a pure stud and as everyone knows….I will keep my finger crossed for the Baldwin.

I love our secondary depth

Atogwe, Butler, Payne, and Dahl is pretty darn good. Then we have Bartell, Fletcher, Murphy, Dockery, and King. Now we just need a DT and DE to have a solid D, unless Scott and Selvie/Hall/Sims prove to be enough (unlikely).
Our needs are much fewer than they were last year. The big needs are:
1. WR
2. DT
3. DE
4. RB
5. OLB (s)

That could be all we need to compete. That can easily be done in one FA and draft. Especially a draft that is so deep at positions 1 and 3. Btw, needs 1-3 are almost interchangeable.

by Carneros on Jun 23, 2010 12:28 PM CDT reply actions

in order

i say olb, de, wr, dt, rb. if we get unga or ogba develops then cross off rb. add some depth to our line and we’re solid there. just need one dt and wr, a couple of olb’s and de’s since hall is getting old as well.

by douchiedude on Jun 23, 2010 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I think our corner situation is a bit of a problem as well.

I would say our biggest needs are:
1. DE
2. CB
3. OLB
4. DT
5. RB
I’m not sold on any of our corners except for Bartell. And he’s not that great either!

by DekaJ on Jun 23, 2010 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

You don't see a need for WR?

And I don’t think Spags likes to invest a whole lot in OLB, which is why I have it so low on the list. I am comfortable with the CBs for now until they show me otherwise.

Without knowing the exact deal yet

its hard to say we got it 100% right but it certainly appears that the FO played the market well and more than likely signed Atogwe for less than he originally wanted. I’m glad Atog is back in the mix and it does make our secondary look a hell of a lot stronger. Simply put IF the D line can at least put in a solid season we should have a half decent D.

Hmm

A little pricey in my opinion but it isn’t break the bank money so more power to him.

average 5M over 5 years?

Not just 5M to start, then? That seems well below what he reportedly asked for initially.

I’m glad they worked it out, although I had just got to the point where I expected to see KPayne out there. I hope that still happens without injury to Butler

by CoachConnors on Jun 23, 2010 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions

You know what's also really interesting...

today is Atogwe’s birthday. Today he turned 29. So if we have him under contract for 5 years that will be until he’s 34. How long do safeties last in the NFL, anyone know? Not that it matters rright now…I was just wondering.

Other than that I’m breathing a sigh of relief…I was really hoping this would happen but since I didn’t hear anything for a while I was worried he was just going to be passed over.

Go Rams!

"We can't run. We can't pass. We can't stop the run. We can't stop the pass. We can't kick. Other than that, we're just not a very good football team right now." --- Bruce Coslett, New York Jets Head Coach circa 1990s

Ed Reed, Dawkins, and Sharper

are all still productive in their 30’s. So was a guy by the name of Lynch…
It is a position that can play into the 30’s and produce while their intellect of the game makes up for the loss of athletic ability.

by CaliRamMan on Jun 23, 2010 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

This made my day as far as sports news goes.

Nbr1..I think Sharper is 34 (35 in Nov) if that is any indication how long some FS can play.

Since I haven't seen anything from....

Ramchop on this thread yet, let me take his place,

Wow what another lame duck signing. Our FO has totally screwed everything up this year, and the draft 4 years a go. Even though that wasn’t the current FO’s draft, it’s still there fault. We should trade for a good veteran like Ronnie Lott, we would immediately become a 7-9 team if we have Ronnie Lott in place of OJ.

RamChop and I are like the 300 spartans we dont care how many of you there are lmao

RamChop tells it how it is and even though you all gang up on him and try your all to make him follow the opinion of the majority in this room he stands up to each and every one of you ,if fact he stands up to all of you at the same time and he shows more class then you can ever dream of having,RamChop is a real fan and he bleeds RAMS most of you are just dreamers like Middas and the real instigators here,Don’t back down from any one RamChop always tell it like it is ,and there will always be some one to stand with you

Did you really just say that????
RamChop and I are like the 300 spartans we dont care how many of you there are lmao

Really lame dude!!!!
You should start concentrating on the football aspect of the team, otherwise people are going to start ripping you on a personal level.

by CaliRamMan on Jun 23, 2010 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

If we signed Atogwe at $5.5M per year till age 34 without it being heavily incentive based, we're far worse idiots than I ever dreamed.

Whenever, I have mentioned bringing in experienced proven players (age 26-28) in exchange for draft picks, I get panned. Everybody says “you can only build through the draft.” But now that we’ve re-signed a 29 year old guy recovering from both a shoulder injury and hernia for a war pension in cash, EVERYBODY’s happy as a lark. He’s not even a Pro-Bowler. And the defensive backfield is the ONE place we have some depth on this team. I hope some of this plethora of corners and safeties can also play LB and DT/DE. Sorry, but I smell another overpaid Marc Bulger, Drew Bennett, Adam Carriker, Jacob Bell, situation developing.

by RamChop on Jun 23, 2010 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

The differance is...

When you were writing about bringing in veteran’s, (ages 26-28) you were talking about trading draft picks, high end draft picks. There is a HUGE differance between a free agent at 28/29, weather it’s someone we re sign or bring in from another team and trading a 1st or 2nd round pick for “x” player.

I know you (ramchop and I but heads a lot on here, I’m a die hard fan, just as much as you are. Just because someone is critical of an organization, or if someone is supportive of an organization, doesn’t make one or the other a better/bigger fan. When I’m sitting around with my friends talking sports, I love to play devils advocate. I’m not trying to make anything I say or you or anyone else personal. I like to play devils advocate, but in most instances I genuinely disagree with your opinions, but not all of them. I think the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle of your organizational beliefs and mine.

watch the lions this year to see what plan will work they went

QB, WR, DT (and RB), except their lines are worse and they signed some bigger name older players

Keith Null won't accept my friend requests.

Actually, they went..

WR in 2007, OT in 2008, QB & TE in 2009 and DT & RB in 2010 so they did like we did and draft O-Line help the year before they got their QB.

Nice

job Rams, you guys needed some good news! You guys play the Broncos in Denver, so good luck this season, except when you come to Denver, of course. I hope to have a good rapport with you guys as I’m an aspiring NFL historian and I know how great the Rams have been throughout their illustrious history!
