Who says the Lions won't become involved? I think they could, but there's no need for them to tip their hand now. On June 1, Atogwe's restricted tender would rise to the franchise level (nearly $7 million), and it seems unlikely the Rams will keep him at that price. Like it or not, the Lions have been one of the most aggressive teams in picking up veteran players, and Atogwe would be a good, young player to acquire. I think they will be in the hunt.
That's ESPN's John Clayton on the possibility of Atogwe becoming a Lion. Sando has more, but I think it's probably a foregone conclusion that Atogwe is not coming back.

I'm afraid Atog is pissed at us and probably feels like the Lions with Stafford and Suh are closer to being contenders than us.
But, $7M is alot of bread. And, we’ve not had any luck signing veterans to big contracts of late. And then there’s the intangibles. Atog did have 2 separate injuries to deal with. He may be degraded from what we’re used too.
we're going to be pretty much the same in one
or two years depending on Jahvid and Suh’s success

I do agree RamChop
As much as I like Atogwe, I prefer not to have us give him his last big payday. Even if he signs with Detroit and has a stellar year and burns us when we play them, not worth it in our long term strategy.
Do I want him to burn us? NO. But he’ll be ready to prove a point, and so be it. But hey, in 2-3 years Atogwe will be a distant memory in my opinion. Let’s keep our money and allocate it elsewhere.
"The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall." - Vince Lombardi
Difference is, we usually get burned by Free Agents from elsewhere.
Played exceptionally well. He isn’t a free agent we grabbed from another team. He’s been here and produced at a higher level than any safety WITHOUT a consistent pass rush or great corners/linebackers. He’s been a lone star with no help, kind of like a Steven Jackson on Defense. You want to talk about intangibles? How about the fact that this guy has come to play each and every single day, not complained about a contract till now, and always played his heart out despite the bullshit that has been the last 3 years. Those are intangibles.
And we’re talking long term? Well how does it make sense that we do NOTHING in Free Agency (for valid reasons, but still nothing), yet we allow a young, extremely productive player who likely has 4-5 more years of production (hell, maybe more. See:Darren Sharper) walk away? Not only that, a guy who has been a leader and a beacon of perserverence despite all of our teams struggles. He’s one guy I can point to and say: “He cared, and he came to do his job everyday.”
If we salivate over what Steven Jackson or Sam Bradford can do with this OL, then we should be thinking about what OJ can do with a pass rush (forthcoming). He’s forced more turnovers than ANYONE the last 3 years despite having one of the weaker pass rushes on the league in front of him. Make no mistake, he IS a game changer. Turnovers change games if your offense is good enough to capitalize. Ours hasn’t been, and that’s probably why some of you don’t appreciate the guy as much.
Anyways, this is a horrible mistake IMO, because the only red-flag anyone has come up with is an injury that he’s likely fully recovered from by now. If I remember correctly, it’s a shoulder injury? L-O-L. Let’s see: let’s put all our bucks into an unproven rookie QB(50 Million Guaranteed, 15 Million A year or so), who had a horrible shoulder injury and whose living and effectiveness DEPEND almost entirely on a SHOULDER. Yes, this is perfectly fine.
On the other hand, we will quibble because our friend OJ, who has given his all and excelled in a shitty environment, produced more turnovers, like the TD stat for QBs, than anyone in the last few years IN THE NFL, because he had a shoulder injury (that he actually could have played with last year in a harness) when his job doesn’t entirely rest on his shoulder, and because he wants to be paid like a top safety in the NFL (which he is).
Seriously guys? A team like this, losing a piece that obviously didn’t care about the money till now, and has always played hard despite it all?
Only our Rams.

Not saying losing Atog is a good thing.
But, we set the wheels in motion by not signing him to a long-term contract last year. And then trying to get him on the cheap after he’s hurt and no other team is willing to pay him the VERY big bucks, has got to create hard feelings. The damage is done. This approach toward players is nothing new for the Rams. Remember Brandon Chillar, Madison Hedgecock, etc. ? If you’d like a list of guys getting the boot over the last decade, see “Decline and Fall of the Raman Empire.”
Let's not exagerate the injury situation.
Bradford’s shoulder injury was no worse than Atogwe’s. They actually were pretty similar. Atogwe also had a sports hernia for which he had surgery, and you never know if those things are going to be permanently fixed or not. I think worrying about the past injuries of either of them is a waste of time.
The fact is that Atogwe was upset with the Rams last year over the contract situation and made sure everyone knew about it. He attended all the offseason training, OTAs and the rest like a real trooper, but he didn’t hide the fact that he was unhappy. This issue has been festering for two years, so resolving it isn’t going to be easy and may not get done. He thinks he’s worth close to $7 million a year on a long term contract and the Rams don’t. I hate to see him leave, but I don’t think he’s worth more than $4 million or so per year and I’ll be very surprised if he gets closer to $7 million from anyone. The Rams would be better with him on the team, no question, but overspending for Atogwe or any other veteran player would be a mistake.
I think we need to pay for his intangibles ...
… since we are such a young team. He’s also a damn good safety.
This is one time that I think we need to overpay to keep him. He’s worth a lot to our young team even if he’s overpaid.
… and yeah, he should be making more than Bartell and Butler.
Problem is … we have 4 safeties. I suppose Dahl is the sure fire non-starter but who else? Maybe we are being dicks because we don’t ‘need’ OJ physically. Let OJ walked and start Butler and Payne?
I say sign OJ and start Payne and OJ. We’ve cut plenty of bad money, pay OJ and keep his attitude and work ethic on this team!!
I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.

I Would Have Rather Paid OJ Than Bartell
I Guess It Won't Be Locker In 2011
