Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Rams include a few surprises in the spring starting lineup

What does the St. Louis Rams 2010 starting lineup look like? Um, probably a lot different right now than it will in September...that is until the usual rash of injuries hit. I kid (fingers crossed). The PD reports how the lineup looked for this week's opening round of OTAs.

The list and discussion below the fold.

Star-divide

Offense

QB - AJ Feeley
RB - Kenneth Darby
FB - Mike Karney
TE - Billy Bajema
LT - Jason Smith
LG - John Greco
C - Jason Brown
RG - Adam Goldberg
RT - Phil Trautwein
WR - Rotating between Donnie Avery, Laurent Robinson, Brandon Gibson and Danny Amendola

Thoughts: The thing that stands out most is Goldberg at RG. Goldberg played well on the inside filling in for injured or benched players last year. It's been said that the Rams brass is pleased and intrigued by Trautwein, a former U Miami OT signed as an undrafted FA last year. It'll be good for the team to get a better sense of what they have in Trautwein. Greco is playing for his roster spot this year, though he does have a decent amount of regular season playing time under his belt. I'd like to see him take a step forward this year. No Hank Fraley?

Bajema is filling in for Fells, who is recovering from a sprained knee ligament and fractured thigh bone that landed him on IR late last season.

Feeley at QB should surprise no one, as we mentioned before

Defense

DE - Chris Long and James Hall
DT - Clifton Ryan and Fred Robbins
SLB - Na'il Diggs
MLB - James Laurinaitis
WLB - Bobby Carpenter
FS - Craig Dahl
SS - James Butler
CB - Ron Bartell and Justin King

Thoughts: First and foremost, wow, where's David Vobora? Bumped for Na'il Diggs? I really thought Vobora came into his own on the strong side last year. Maybe they want to see how Diggs looks in the scheme, though they should have a good idea already since defensive coordinator Ken Flajole already coached him back in Carolina. I'm a little surprised by this, but it's still early.

Bradley Fletcher Bradley is still recovering from his injury, and I expect him to replace King by the time camp starts.

Dahl played well filling in for injured starters at both safety spots last year, and his familiarity with the scheme no doubt gets him the first look in Atogwe's absence.

Looks good to me. Fletcher returning to the lineup will be big. Offense looks a little shakey right now. Sjax39 please recover and good luck!1

Hey we have great LB depth this year whats there to complain about? I’m sure Vobora will get some snaps

I had forgotten about Trautwein

I hope he does well and works into some kind of rotation at Tackle.

Stett?

Why isn’t Stet in at LG or RG? I thought he played well.

I've always had high hopes for Greco

Nothing ever came out of it though…

I’m not surprise with Diggs at SLB, I expect him to play on running down and Vobora on passing down. I also think that Vobora or Grant could play at WLB on obvious rushing down.

No where to go but up..

Once rookies are inserted, players healed and contracts signed.

My belief, right now, of Week 1's lineup

QB – Sam Bradford
RB – Steven Jackson
FB – Mike Karney
WR1 – Laurent Robinson
WR2 – Brandon Gibson
WR3 – Donnie Avery
TE – Daniel Fells
LT – Jason Smith
LG – Jacob Bell
C – Jason Bronw
RG – Adam Goldberg (Remember prediction for week 1. I do think someone else will eventually become the RG)
RT – Rodger Saffold

RE – Chris Long
LE – James Hall
UT – Clifton Ryan
DT – Fred Robbins
WLB – Bobby Carpenter
MLB – James Laurinaitis
SLB – David Vobora
CB1 – Ronald Bartell
CB2 – Fletcher Bradley Fletcher
CB3 – Jerome Murphy
FS – O.J. Atogwe (Yes I said it)
SS – James Butler

Quality Depth/Contributor guys – WR Danny Amendola, FS Craig Dahl, DT Darell Scott

The name's Rams, St. Louis Rams.

Right, I meant for week 1

Keep in mind since 1970, 40 years, only 5 rookie QB’s have started their first game. This from the cleverly titled article Realistic Expectations for Sam Bradford that ram_rod turned us on to.

We might see him appear in a couple of games before he starts.

by CoachConnors on May 21, 2010 1:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Carefull using Sando's post for justification.

He mentions 16 game starters, not rookies starting week 1 and uable to start all the games in a season via injury, effectiveness or season length (i.e. Jim Plunkett started all 14 games his rookie year).

He also includes all rookie QB’s not just 1st overall picks.

by RBramfan on May 21, 2010 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

We'll see how it goes

but unless Bradford is just so amazing and Feeley is such a total bust that the coaching staff feel they have no other choice but to play him from day 1 (which nobody expects to happen). Otherwise, there would be no reason to throw him to the wolves that soon. It’s not like, if he plays we will be in playoff contention, or anything like that.

On the other hand,at 33 years old and not having been the starter on any of his recent teams, AJ Feeley will NOT be able to carry the team for 16 games so you know Sam’s going to have some starts somewhere along the line this season. Maybe a good idea is to start him when the apposing team is not known for having much of a blitz package so he’ll have a little breathing room.

Go Rams!

"We can't run. We can't pass. We can't stop the run. We can't stop the pass. We can't kick. Other than that, we're just not a very good football team right now." --- Bruce Coslett, New York Jets Head Coach circa 1990s

Playoffs vs Winless

I see no reason to throw him out there too soon either.

The chances of either of their QBs carrying them to the playoffs? Almst none.
The chances of them praying for a single win again if they throw Bradford in before he’s ready? Maybe not so small.

On the other hand I can see Feeley getting a win or two, I can see Bradford getting the same if he’s up to speed.

Getting a couple W’s while starting the kid off right is the best case scenario.

Wr and Safety issue

WR: Donnie Avery is not the 3rd receiver, thats ridiculous. I could understand if you tried to bump him back from 1 to 2 but to 3 is a little much. Also I think Burton can be better than the return specialist Amendola.

Safety: Kevin Payne is going to be a much bigger help than Craig Dahl

Also Diggs and Setterstom should be added to the “Quality Depth/Contributer guys”

by bswish on May 20, 2010 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Avery #3

I don’t think Avery is a #3 either, he is our veteran among young Wrs. But I do agree with putting him in the slot, hes short and fast. @2 Gibson showed alot of potential last year and putting him as possesion Wr is smart. Then Laurant Robinson should be the #1 one of the tallest and best route running WRs. Look for Gilyard at #4 could do some damage with these guys.

by Force 314 on May 21, 2010 6:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Almost

Avery is #1 or 2. They’ll probably try to use Fraley. Gibson will get the nod over Robbins. Vobora is still Mr. Irrelevant. Atogwe will be gone. Payne will start.

by RamChop on May 20, 2010 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

This is to both Ed and bswish

I think he’s trying to say that Avery would be better as the slot receiver. I completely agree. He is not suited to be a #1, regardless of his “physical toolset” or whatever ignites the #1 WR talk. His skills are best used where Bond put him.

Reciever line up

is gona be Robinson, Avery, Mardy, Gibson, and either Curry or Foster, Amendola i dont think is going to make it with Mardy here.

by kylew1 on May 20, 2010 7:11 PM CDT reply actions

yea

he is one of the undrafted rookies, he is like 6’2 225 pounds

by kylew1 on May 20, 2010 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

true

but i think it boils down to who is a better receiver, Amendola is good, but he is a possession receiver and Mardy I think is better and can take over return duties

by kylew1 on May 20, 2010 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

When you have a great return man

you don’t throw him out for a rookie! our special teams last year were fantastic compared to the rest of the team. looking at the depth charts I actually like our receivers especially given the extra year of experience, Gibson showed promise, Amendola was solid as a kr/pr Robinson looked good and Avery could have been better with good quarterbacking!

by MassRam on May 21, 2010 11:50 AM CDT reply actions

Amendola was able to find the holes

when returning kicks and gave us some very nice returns. At the same time, he isn’t fast enough to take it all the way. I can remember a couple of occasions when he had clear sailing, but a defender caught him pretty quickly. I don’t know if Gilyard is any faster in the open field, but he’s at least worth a try. When the blockers do their jobs and the returner is in the open field, he has to be able to score and not get caught from behind.

by andyrose on May 21, 2010 4:15 PM CDT reply actions

I don't remember who said it

but i remember someone saying that Gilyard is much better at returning kicks cause it gives him time to get up to full speed whereas amendola is better at returning punts cause he has more moves. If we keep both on the roster i can see that playing out to a certain extent

by Stonedtodeath on May 21, 2010 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know if Gilyard needs time to get up to speed

From what I saw Gilyard has great acceleration, great stop-start, and has moves that are at least as good as Amendola’s. I actually think better than Amendola’s, but we’ll see. I wouldn’t be surprised if they split up the return duties too, though.
